Persona 5 getting an announcement on May 5, 2016

At any rate, you seem to be comparing the most successful JRPG franchise of all-time internationally (FFXIII sold over 6 million units and that was considered a disappointment) to Persona.

?

I'm not. I'm saying SE doesn't localize things quickly much more often than Atlus does. A point you didn't exactly refute. You said they vary as does Nintendo. I agree.

You said Atlus localize P5 as best they feel and release it. I agree.

You also said Dark Souls isn't a text heavy game and not really a point to Namco. I agree and I'm saying Arena is text-heavy, so is Ultimax, and both are points to Atlus because of it.

Atlus make there return of investment on there big titles in the US market and then some, especially on the Persona series and HD games like Catherine. If they make games for Japan first and then the US market as a secondary focus then that implies the cost of development is budgeted to be recouped on Japanese sales alone. Considering how well Persona 4 sold in the US then any sort of notable delay for financial reasoning would be bizarre. I struggle to accept that their cash flow would be so bad they couldn't afford to localize one game in either a simultaneous manner or close to the Japanese release (that they also most definitely anticipate to sell very well in the US).

Considering all that, any sort of notable gap between Japan and the US (like 3 months plus) is a matter of planning and priority, not cost imo.

I guarantee you they budgeted persona 5 with western sales in mind. Making it in Japanese first is a practical issue since that's what the development team speaks. Any game that's announced worldwide right off the bat like persona 5 is budgeting with worldwide sales in mind

My bet for the stream/event is on the following:

  • Japanese Release Date (August 25th - September 15th) [Or WW Release Date]
  • Western Release Window (Japan Release + 1-2 Months Max) [Or WW Release Date]
  • Limited Edition Details (Artbook, Steelbook, Pins, etc.)
  • Collector's Edition Details (LE + Figure of a Character or Persona)
  • More Information on P5 Anime.
  • More Info on Persona's 20th anniversary
  • Further Information Tease (E3 for NA Release Date Announcement)
It's Atlus' biggest game ever - they need to go all out and blow us away with this.

This is Atlus's biggest and most likely most ambitious game they have ever created full stop. At this point, they are not going to take their Persona fanbase in either the east or the west lightly.

I expect a US release date at E3, to release before the end of the year...Atlus USA had probably been working on it concurrently, but held up by Atlus Japan...that's my feeling just based on how they have acted.

They would not have been so firm about a 2015 release date if they had not already had code in their hands themselves at the time.

That's the thing that gets me. How could they have been so firm about a 2015 release for that long, right up until TGS, and not have started working on localizing the game. In my mind there's no other way to reconcile that.

Oh, okay. Nevermind then. For the record I hope it comes as soon as possible. I have rarely seen GAF this thirsty over a game.

People are asking too much from Atlus. They are still a relatively small publisher, WW release costs too much for them.

That being said, the question is "do Atlus want to remain a small publisher, or do they want to break out the niche?" This is a golden chance for Atlus to finally get into mainline. All the big medias are looking closely for what they have to show. If they are treating P5 the same way they treated P4 outside Japan, it means they are comfortable with where they currently are and they lack ambition, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But they can also take the risk and make a true breakthrough.

Square went all out for FFVII and we all know what happened later. Game industry is stale AF, and I really want more "go big or go home" attitude.

In that case I don't think its totally unreasonable to expect or anticipate either a simaltaneous release or release relativelty close to the Japanese release, considering it had a worldwide announcement.

Hopefully the reveal tomorrow sheds light on a US release date, year/month/window, or at least when we should expect to find out.

It's a Japanese event made for a Japanese audience taking place at Japan's second tallest structure.

Everyone's all worried about release dates and localization and I'm just sitting here like "Oh god I hope those menus are still there."

Exactly, i'd be very surprised if they say a single thing about a western release.

I'm watching all the old trailers released for Persona 5 and jeez...

Itsbeen3000gif.

I care more about playing and having this game than I do any other period and I've been waiting awhile for Versus XIII now XV.

I don't know if I should switch back to my OG Igor avatar or keep my current Weavile one. I'm so hype for both game series.

At the end of the trailers it says summer 2016 for everyone to see. Only downside to it is that they're all Japanese trailers. Part of being a Shin Megami Tensei fan or in this case a Persona fan is having faith I guess. Need to believe I'll have my hands on this sooner than later!

I just need new music and a trailer to be satisfied. Limited edition stuff would be prettttty sweet though.

The menus were too good to be replaced or changed.

At best, they acknowledge the existance of people outside of Japan who know about Persona 5 like they did with the last SMT4A stream when Okinawa came out on top of the Tokyo Sabbath campaign due to Americans and Europeans joining the game.

I think 30 minutes? Pretty sure there is a Persona Stalker Club episode right after.

EDIT: Hour long

Thanks, that chart is pretty handy.

This just made me think, but will this stream be translated? Was going to wake up early to watch it but probably won't bother if I can't understand what's going on, and will just wait for the articles afterwards.

I don't think that's true, similar size companies do it while also including EU.
Depends on how you define size. Atlus make more game than many publishers, but it doesn't mean they have a stronger publishing team. Though it is true that if they want more global awareness, they need a better international branch.

Freely admitting that I may be mis-remembering from all of the hullabaloo when the delay announcement hit, but didn't Hardin eventually hint (to some degree, at least) that Atlus USA hadn't received anything significant to begin the localization process from headquarters after the delay was announced?

And that the 2015 'reassurances', on his part, was the assumption that they could get the localization done in a short time?

I'll have to go back and see if I can find the relevant post, it was in the community thread, iirc.

Again, could be completely mis-remembering his explanation on the process, will see if I can find the relevant bits.

Hiiiighly unlikely, but we'll probably have streamers doing on the fly translation. Even if not, it's not that hard to figure out what they're talking about.

I think you may be misremembering significantly. Especially on the strange assumption that Atlus USA would just assume they could turn out a localization quick without code actually in their hands, let alone post that anywhere.

If they announce something huge, someone will sub it and put it on YT to get the views

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN GUYS. CE JAPAN ONLY AND WESTERN RELEASE EARLY 2017.

i'm of the hype train the year (last) that atlus broke my trust in humans.

Since we're talking release dates, I wonder if they'll flip all expectations and tease a worldwide release date reveal @ E3?

I don't expect them to tease anything for a Western release. The best we can hope for is that Atlus USA talks about the localization soon (at E3 or before) and they confirm that the game is launching not long after Japan.

Realistically speaking, that's exactly what I think.

As soon as we get a release date for Japan, Atlus HQ and Hardin will be more at liberty to tease a western release and its timing in more detail.

Please Atlus, don't break my heart with another delay :(

I mean it's 5/5 FFS.

It doesn't get more Persona 5 than that for a release date.

Also, 8:30 AM EST is quite the time to be awake..

I sort of expect a close JPN and NA release, but I take it for granted that simultaneous or close WW release is the norm for big titles in this day and age. And yes, I am old enough to remember the late 90s when 9 months to a year for localization were the norm -- part of the reason I started studying Japanese.

The most Persona 5 day to announce the date would be May 5, 5555
which also happens to be the European release date
.
