Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

Oh, they improved performance last patch? I went to both of the trouble spots and I noticed the frame rate is much more stable, for example on the bridge, I was getting 52 lowest, now 58. And the
Dragon Barracks
wasn't dropping to 49 any more. I haven't played in awhile but I wanted to test before/after with the new Nvidia driver but it seems the last game patch really helped me out at least.

Edit: Seeing worse performance with the new driver, anyone else?

lates patch + newest driver seems great for me, nearly locked 60 in all the "shitty" areas.

gtx770 with these settings:
E4670A4566A70A4FA202001B1ACE5772B257C6D4

Performance is the same as the previous driver on my end.

Yep, was my bad. My GPU overclock wasn't active which caused the drop in performance, it wasn't the new driver.

I made a little GIF showing me running across "the bridge" (late game spoilers) with the newest drivers and latest patch, I've definitely gained a few FPS here between the latest patch and driver, and it's considerably better than at launch. This is on max settings and I'm almost at the holy grail consistently, this area along with
Dragon's Barracks
are where my performance is lowest, even though they're fairly empty areas they've always been my trouble spots. Everywhere else is rock solid 60.

All we need now is the autosave stutter fixed and better anti cheat and I'll be as happy as a pig in shit.

I get similar performance at max settings, be it at 1080p or 1440p at that location. There's no way to get a solid 60fps as far as I'm concerned. Engine bottleneck perhaps?

It's definitely weird that you can't scrape together an extra 3 frames over me with that system, who knows why though. I was dropping to the low 50s there at launch though, so they've made improvements at least.

Exactly, I remember seeing it drop down to ~53fps around that area before the first patch hit on April 18th.

Auto-save stutter was fixed with the latest patch. The stutter that occurs as you move throughout an area is still there though (as it is on console)... presumably because of asset loading.

My game ia running from 50fps to 60fps but occasinally it drops to 30 or 40 and then goes up abruptly. Why is that happening? Using a gtx 970m

I can't get Steam streaming to work with this game. I get sound and control, but just a white screen. Occasionally I see a black screen with a cursor, but then the cursor disappears.

Host PC is typical 4790k with NV 980.

Anyone have this working ok?

Edit: Should have mentioned that other games work fine, including DS2.

It will probably seems stupid, but i fixed constant stutter and fps drops on the followin machine:

I7 3770k
8 gb ram
GTX 680
Samsung 850 evo SSD

by not utlizing the ps4 controller.

I don't even know if it's really fixed, since i tried it only for 20 minutes before going back to work, but while i was using the ps4 controller i could play perfectly for 2 minutes and then the game would become a slideshow, after removing the ps4 controller (and using the keyboard in the mean time, which sucks btw) the game seems to run smootly.

It could be the software i'm using to make the ps4 controller to work (DS4 Windows) which i haven't update in a lot of time, this evening i'll try to update it and see if that solves something.

I get it to work fine streaming to my Alienware Alpha and also to my Steamlink

Did you do anything special? I'm using beta clients and the latest drivers. I reset DS3 to default settings to see if that was an issue,

Closest I got was a black screen with sound. I tried to a Steam Link and my HTPC with the same result.

Which driver did u use?
I have almost exact system as you have (Ultra II ssd, windows 8.1), and the game continues to stutter time to time.
While i was running at that bridge , i saw frame drops to 53-54.
Today i tried last whql driver, 365.10, and it caused gpu clock speed reduction while i was playing. It sometimes dropped from 1418 mhz to 900ish. I immediately returned to latest hot fix driver.

So, to update, it actually really was the ps4 controller that made the game a constant stutterfest, switched it for the xbox one one and it has been working flawleslly (well not constant 60fps, but i wasn't expecting that anyway) since then : )

have you tried x360ce? it's a 360 controller emulator, i'm pretty sure it works with dual shock 4.Not saying that the performance will be better but if it's ds4windows causing the problem...

Now that I have a lot more playtime under the new patch, I believe the auto-save stutter was completely resolved when I initially thought it wasn't. I do notice it from time-to-tume, but they happen much less frequently, and I think it happens during asset loading when transitioning areas. Much less egregious and more tolerable, but at least the main issues are ironed out.

Something is bothering me for a while.

I have the Eizo Foris FG2421 monitor (VA/120hz/1080p).

When I play Dark Souls III in window mode, I have perfect black levels, like in Windows, or any game that supports 120hz.

If I play the game in full screen mode, the monitor is no longer displaying at 120hz and instead is using 60hz.

The blacks are now very clearly grey. I notice the same effect when I set Windows to 60hz.

My question: is there a way to tell Windows/NVIDIA (?) to display the game at 120hz, even if the game is only running at 60fps?

Is Window mode my only option?

For the game under Nvidia control panel go to preferred refresh rate and set it to highest (make sure it shows the right monitor).

Try Borderless Gaming to make your windowed game fullscreen or try CRU to force 120hz.

Someone parried my attack, gave me a riposte and the game went black, needed to alt+enter and go into window mode to see the game again...

That sounds like you got other problems.

BTW turn all the ECO settings off on your monitor. Does it use a dyanmic contrast ratio or something and that's why the colors were changing?

I have had that happen a number of times, and nearly always when there's an enemy aggro'd. Do you have a dual display set up? From what I could gather my monitor was being detected all over again in the middle of play for some reason, and the resulting Nvidia popup (configure g-sync) made the window get screwed up.

Is Borderles Gaming safe? No bans for it?

It's safe, it only resizes and moves your window.

I experienced the same thing with my 144Hz monitor. The "prefered refreshrate" feature didn't work for me, so I used CRU and Strobelight to remove all 60Hz modes. Make sure to make backups if you decide to change anything!

I'm noticing the same ambient-audio-loop-reset issues that people have described here earlier. It's mostly noticable when you're in your inventory screen and move through your items. The ambient sound would reset every time you click around in your inventory. Depending on how pronounced the ambient audio in your location is, your really hear how the ambient sound begins to play from anew and it can be very distracting.
Updating my drivers didn't get rid of it. I guess there is no workaround for this?
I'm using a X-Fi Titanium and downmixing from 5.1 to stereo. All post-process features like CMSS, Cristalyzer, SVM etc. are turned off.

Been using it since the game's release. Had no problems with it.

Can you try using onboard audio and see if you still have the problem?

I have a triple head setup, but "disconnect" (in Windows) all but the Eizo when I play most games.

[...]

Yes, it uses one. Colors are fine tho when its on.
Any reasons to turn ECO settings off?

Without the dynamic contrast setting, my eyes bleed on white backgrounds, but the colors are better I guess.

Just tried and the problem persists. I deactivated my X-Fi card, switched to my SoundMAX onboard card and re-installed its drivers. Still got the same ambient sound reset.

I've seen many people in other threads on Steam and Reddit that have the same problem on different brands of cards. It has to be another problem with the game. I'm slowly getting more and more tired of the technical issues in this game.

It's just going to change the brightness and contrast while you play and it will be inconsistent. Find an online setup/calibration guide to set your monitor to something you like without having it fluctuate.

Well at least we can say it's not your sound card now :P.

What do you mean by "resetting"?

There's an effect which lowers all sounds when you navigate the menu. As soon as you press down (or anything) in a menu (which triggers the navigational sound effect), all other sounds are lowered. Some kind of dynamic effect.

It's very annoying, but I think it's intended.

Yes, the sound is lowered temporarily during these actions but it also sounds like the ambient loop starts to play from anew. In areas like Archdragon Peak I noticed something that sounds like re-looped ambient audio quite stark when navigating the menu. It was also noticable in places where the bonfire sound was very pronounced. I recently started NG+ and can't verify it again.

Did sound a bit too distracting for just being dynamically lowered ambient audio. Need to do some more testing to see where else it happens.

Frame rate dips when the game auto saves are terrible for me right now. It fluctuates depending on what time of day I'm playing it seems? I dunno.

Auto save stutter should be fixed per the latest patch. You'll still get stutter as you move through an area though.

I was playing a patched version though. It seemed to be better, but last night was really awful. And it wasn't stutter from moving through an area, it was definitely auto save stutter. Because things would be a perfectly smooth 60FPS, but I read a message on the ground, for example, close it, the auto save pops up and it immediately dips. And I could repeat it with any of the actions that would cause an auto save.

I get like a one frame hitch once in a while moving through areas. Is this normal? Does it also happen on higher end GPUs? I have a 780Ti. Assuming this is a VRAM thing.

I have a 980Ti and I get this. Have tried many suggested fixes and a range of settings and nothing seems to help. It seems to be worse in some areas of the game than others. Very annoying still.

16 hours in and other than the texture pop-in, I enjoy how this game runs for me at 2560x1440 with mostly maxed out settings. I haven't experienced any crashes. Only one glitch so far where an enemy was stuck in the ceiling of a building.

So the latest Nvidia drivers seem to have added a new Power Management setting "Prefer Consistent Performance". At least, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before.

I haven't done any proper frame rate tests, but performance is dramatically more consistent (so I guess it works as advertised!). There's still occasional stutters, but they're much more rare. I was doing a boss (P.S.) that required some pretty precise dodges, and the frequent stutters kept killing me. Turning on the setting was extremely noticeable.

Give it a shot!

Odd...

Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 870M
Driver Version: 365.10

This option is likely to be there for mobile GPUs only, and I think that it has something to do with power savings as on the desktop there really is no need for it if you can select "Prefer maximum performance" instead.
