Persona 5 comes out September 15th in Japan

This is good for JP and the JRPG market. We just gotta support both games and hopefully both review well! This could drive more ps4 sales in JP.

I'd mainly be concerned about both games potentially swallowing up each other's sales and thus, both not getting as many first-day sales as possible.

Definitely! And, at least in the West, good word of mouth could potentially give both games long legs.

And realistically, is P5 going to come out earlier than December in NA anyway? :-(

Dec is my guess, late Oct at the earliest.. Sending this game out in Nov would be suicide with all those shooters ( Cod,TitanFall2,BF5 and maybe that WD2 game)

9/15 for JP?? Dammit, I was not expecting that. That pretty much means 2017 for NA. You're killing me Atlus.

A PS3 version is out of the blue. Makes me wonder if that has held back their graphics engine, because it looks like a PS3 title.

It's not out of the blue at all. This game was originally build for PS3 and it's been known for a while now that it will land on both platforms.

some in Japan haven't moved to next gen yet, I believe PS3 MGSV outsold the Ps4 version overthere.

I missed that news then. But it's out of the blue in that they've never to my knowledge done a two-console release. I guess they're worried about the PS4 install base in JP.

When P5 was announced for PS4 in addition to the PS3 my initial reaction was, "Oh, that's clearly because of territories outside of Japan."

They released Catherine on the Xbox 360 and PS3. I think the PS4 version was more because of:

1. Sega (which Atlus acknowledged could help them with a port with their technical knowledge)
2. Development time: As time moves forward, the PS3 becomes less relevant. PS4 multi-plats in Japan have been selling more than their PS3 counter-parts for a while now.
3. Western audience: Atlus Japan doesn't totally live in a bubble. A big release of theirs exclusively on the PS3 would have really been bad for sales to a Western audience compared to it now being on the PS4.

2017 for NA. Very unlikely they'll have it localize in 3 months time. September is gonna be a bloodbath.

To be fair, given how long this has been in production, as well as the various comments made by Hashino about polishing vs adding new features regarding delays, if they've committed to September for Japan, at this point I'd imagine they're close to complete to the point of not vastly changing a majority of the game - of which localization could likely then at least start.

I'd imagine localization would be happening at this point, and 6-7 months til November/December isn't terrible.

To be fair, even assuming that, the other big issue would be if Atlus wants to try and go up against the AAA holiday release scheduling.

Even if Atlus scrapped the PS3 version and coded for it ground-up, I don't think it would look much better.

Look at the other jRPGs on the market (excluding FFXV) to get a taste of where the graphic-bar lies.

So what possible perks outside of resolution should the ps4 version have? I'm not expecting 60fps ( not like a turn based rpg needs it but it would be nice) this game should be perfect for Remote play btw.

How much of the shooter fan base overlap with Persona 5's fan base?

Not much or any but if you can at least rob a few sales from a curious casual/shooter bro person that's all that matters. So positioning is important.

So that means that USA will probably get it around 2017, I just don't see it happening within this year.

Not necessarily. I can see it releasing in December if AtlusUSA has been keeping up with the translations during dev.

But I also wouldn't bet on it. Which is fine, as I'll be occupied with other games in the meantime.

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't put dual audio in.
Surely there is plenty of space.

It's usually not space, but licensing/cost issues. Perhaps they could justify it for a release as "big" as Persona 5, but who knows? It eats into their profits. And Japanese voice-acting companies are particularly ornery.

It's probably safer to keep your expectations for 2017 but I can see a very late winter release. USA Atlus seem to be aware of the game for a while now and we're quite confident last year.

All they had to do was license the Catherine engine again. :/ Or use UE4.

October would be a good time to release it. I'm under the impression that they have been working on the localization since last year

Maybe, but their previous dates had western release at the same time if not really close to Japanese release.

avatar bet, avatar bet

I bet... you're wrong
lol, I'll do an avatar bet. They would need to do VA's for the dub plus QA and submission.
Its unfortunate they'll miss the holiday sales, but there isn't enough time unless they scrap the dub and start cutting corners. That ain't gonna happen.
I wouldn't mind being totally wrong.

Why? They said themselves that they created their own engine for creative flexibility and to truly create what they wanted to. Obviously they didn't want to use Gamebryo again. And they didn't create a whole engine for a single console game; they were thinking past Persona 5 when they made it (and the game itself, really).

Why? Well, because the graphical fidelity is very underwhelming for a PS4 game? P3 and P4 looked good for PS2 games, and SMT Nocturne looked great. Catherine looked great on the PS3. This engine doesn't look great. It might have been better if Sega had created an engine for them and let them focus on the content.

Do we have confirmation they've done NO voice recording yet? Who's to say they haven't recorded the majority of the game in English seeing the previous release date was last year. Any new content that requires voices is a maybe, but translation to English is also likely largely done.

The game looks great, who gives a shit if it's not running VXAO and SSS.

I think the game looks amazing.

And Sega creating an engine for them doesn't really work when they finished up their engine for Persona 5 literally ~4 years before they were acquired by Sega Sammy.

in what fucking universe does this game look visually anything short of incredible

saying it's "worse than p3/p4 in places" or that "p3 and p4 looked great on ps2" requires a pretty crazy idea of what those games looked like

My reason for wanting dual audio would be because P5's Japanese cast is pretty much an all star roster of talent. But I'd be fine with English only.

Yeah, definitely hope there's dual audio this time, even if it is paid DLC.
Please let it happen, the Japanese cast is just bliss.

Omg this looks so good! The UI is amazing. Looks like they really put a lot of ova into it as well which is a huge plus in my book. I hope the story is really good too.

Any chance they are doing a simultaneous release for US and Japan? Maybe saving the announcement for E3? I thought Atlus US was working a lot closer with the dev team this time around so we wouldn't have to wait that long for a localized release.

Yeah, I agree. I love the english audio in previous games, but this cast is so damn good that I'll probably play it in japanese if they let us choose.

uwot?

Persona is one of the few series that has had fantastic English voice acting.

I hated the voices in both P3 and P4. To me, the actors sounded like if they were dubbing a show for kids, and everyone had high-pitched annoying voices, even the guys. That actually forced me to disable voices in those games (I still had to endure them in animated cutscenes, though).

So I also hope they offer dual audio.
