Please tell me the PS4 Neo upgrades of my PS4 games will be free ?

Considering they will come in patch form if the leaked papers are then yes they will be free, it's up to the dev though if they want to patch it in on older games.

It's confirmed in the leaked documents. All PS4 games will have built in Neo graphics modes from October. Some current games like Uncharted 4 and/or Dark Souls 3 etc might get free graphics updates if the dev/publisher is up to it.

You'll need a Season Pass Neo for a developer to dedicate an unpaid intern to patch improvements to their game.

As it stands right now, there is literally no guarantee of anything. The product still hasn't been officially acknowledged!

They're not going to outline the restrictions and promises about how they're going to run the two systems concurrently until they actually get some official literature out there about it. (And then, of course, there's always the possibility they'll be embellishing the truth - it'll probably pay to be very attentive as to exactly how things are phrased - but it'll also give you a baseline as to what's actually being presented as on offer here and what you'll get for your purchase.)

It will be interesting to see how many developers adapt older games for it. I'm gutted more didn't do the same for regular 3DS games on new 3DS, but I guess it isn't worth the resources in many cases.

We're all engineers from Sony who can answer this question so it's a good thing you asked it here.

Well my uncle is a janitor at Sony and he told me just yesterday that Playstation VR launches in November, and I totally trust him.

And the answer is yes. Probably. Why wouldn't it?

I honestly hope they do charge just so I can see the fanboy damage control.

"A remaster of a remaster you say? NOPE. /This/ remaster looks better than the last version! Totally worth buying the game for the third time at full price, especially with that new neo plat!"

The question'll boil down to 'will this get us more sales'? And in many cases, long after the peak sales period for a title, I think the answer will be expected to be 'no'.

One exception I can see, though, is first-party stuff; even if it doesn't serve to sell the game more, it will act as a showcase as for what Neo can do, and getting that perception out there rapidly would bolster Sony's case for selling the Neo to the marketplace. I'd be very surprised if Uncharted didn't have a Neo mode.

What's the rule on if a game is getting DLC after the NEO release? Dark Souls has DLC plans all the way into 2017. Will they be required to release a Neo version of the game if they want to keep supporting it?

Yeah, I reckon WWS titles generally will get some Neo patching.

From 3rd parties, maybe devs like CDPR and studios with a similar background/outlook on delivering customers value.

I think a lot will depend on how straightforward the job is - if Sony arse up the SDK it'll pretty slim pickings, if it's a relatively low-cost thing to do maybe you'll see some bigger publishers patching their annualised titles.

Neo does not currently exist. We have no idea what policies Sony will have or why. This is like asking what kind of controller Nintendo will have two console generations from now, or whether or not games will be more expensive in the future. We can speculate, sure, but we don't have any concrete information at all.

The best approach is nihilism.

They aren't gonna sell you a new PS4 and then ask you to buy an update for a game you already own to make it run better. That's just stupid.

I imagine the only thing that is gonna change is that developers will have their games check what hardware it's running on and load up the appropriate settings. For example, If it's on the current PS4 model then it will load one set of textures and keep the framerate locked at 30fps. If it's on the PS4 neo then it will load up another set of (higher quality) textures and unlock the framerate.

Forgive me as I'm not a game developer but I guess it would be just like changing settings in a PC game. You have to do that manually but with PS4 the game will do it automatically based on hardware and maybe they will even give you an option to lower some settings and improve others...exactly like a PC game.

There is no such thing as a "Neo version."

If they actually want to sell a significant number of PS4 NEOs, I hope for them the patches are for free.

Like, "Here's a new full-priced model of PS4 which has more Power in order to play your games and VR experience better through upgrades at an additional cost!"

That would be the dumbest thing ever, and Sony is not that dumb.

PS4 Neo is just a beefed up PS4. PS4 Neo games = PS4 games. New games will come with a separate configuration preset for Neo to take advantage of the hardware, older games can be patched to do it, but are not required.

I get so sick of you people that want bad things to happen just so you can get some cheap entertainment. It's really pathetic.

All titles are written for the baseline model with a Neo mode, according to the leaks. No Neo-only or targetted games.

Yeah I'm not saying there's a neo-only plan for targeting one specific console - I'm talking about games that came before the Neo, the regular PS4 games that are already out and about - were those built with a Neo mode?

Gonna quote myself :)

From what we know, no.

But it is also highly unlikely that any older games are going to get patched at all unless they are continually being update like MMOs and such. I'd say unless they are released just before the Neo they simply aren't going to get patched, most developers aren't going to want to go back and throw the game through QA again after they have moved on. I can see the big releases doing it, Naughty Dog for instance seems the most likely candidate that would up Uncharted 4 some more.

Otherwise every game released after a certain point has to be supported in some form I believe, seeing as the new kits have apparently only recently gone out I imagine anything released from now till the Neo is officially out will get patched.

You pay for each jiggleflop the game is upgraded. I think there's 18 different upgrade models at 3.99 USD each and you need to buy/unlock then through feats of strength in game.

IDK

Hard to imagine many games except those published by Sony will get upgrades, free or otherwise. Especially not for games that have an imminent sequel, or are annual releases.

I doubt anyone will be allowed to charge for upgrades tbh.

Edit: stuff like Destiny and The Division are viable candidates, since they're still generating money.
