It's a more competent game than some give it credit for, but it's way smaller scale and set in an environment that doesn't really work for BF gameplay. Regular city cops with military-grade weapons fighting wars in city streets? Nah.

Maps are better designed
Weapons are better balanced - DICE LA did their best but I feel they swung too far in one direction with weapon spread in mid to long range engagements.

just give me my horse machine gun

That looks like it carries it, not shooting from it.

So what's the likelihood that Dice treats this conflict with the respect and nuance it deserves and not just make a set piece mindless shooter?

Like this has to be first big budget big franchise game set in WWI in years? Ever?
Yeah, I'm really curious what the tone of the game will be, especially with such miserable subject matter

Battlefield 1 to feature playable character Ernest Hemingway

Zero, and that's why I hope there's no campaign.

but of course there will be

Thats one of my concerns. Looking at DICE's track record in regards to campaigns I hope they put their time in and create a narrative more in line with Valiant Hearts: The Great War then something like Battlefield 4.

I hope the Harlem Hellfighters is a good sign, and they did a good job with Vietnam and WWII.

Very low, DICE has never been known for their campaigns and I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Just think about riding into battle on a horse while there are dogfights in the air, tanks are rolling over trenches and a Zeppelin raid is happening at the same time in MP. Battlefield will absolutely do the scale of the war justice

More importantly what is the theme song going to be like. Its become more and more techno which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it probably wouldn't fit a WW1 setting, maybe back to orchestral

Would love a more survival oriented game set in the trenches and decimated French, Turkish, and Russian villages. You have to survive the war rather than fight it. Scavenge for supplies, hide amongst dead bodies, loot villages, avoid booby traps etc.

A linear shooter where you play as someone single-handedly taking down the German army whilst the American anthem plays in the background you say? Coming right up!

Chances are very very low. Any game which is trying to truly recreate the horrors of war - especially WWI - will be a truly depressing and shocking experience. Which is something DICE has never really tried to do in the first place. War is a horrible thing but I feel like BF always tried to distance itself from more serious themes. BF games are supposed to be ridiculous, imo.

For people who don't know much about WW1 and are interested in it, this is a good documentary to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52cTbhwU8NI

Holy shit they have a Blu-Ray of this. I've been waiting for this. They use colorized real footage from the war. The Apocalypse WWII series is also very good with the same sort of footage. It's on the US Netflix right now.

Don't forget Europe. Battlefield sells very well over here.

WW1 is a hot topic and well known here in Belgium but also in France and especially the United Kingdom.

I didn't forget Europe, I just have no experience or knowledge of European school systems. It's a war that's much closer to home in Europe than America. Both wars hit Europe pretty hard.

Zero. You know they're going to go for the same tone as in BF3 and BF4.

@dannyodwyer: So...we're gonna be doing a info-dump video about the Battlefield announcement this afternoon. And believe me, you'll want to watch it...

Judging by the quality of their past campaigns, it doesn't look good.

But a big part of me wants to give them the benefit of the doubt. WWI was a big focus area for me during my undergraduate degree and I'd love to see it done well.

That said, I'm not too worried about the multiplayer getting the tone right. It's the campaign that I'm worried about them going all Michael Bay with.

Hope he's true. I'd love proper gameplay and a decent amount of info instead of just a trailer and half an hour of "well we have a very visionary vision for this vision of WW1" talk.

I'd say....very low. That said though, I think having it be an alternate world setting gives them the leeway to have it be a VERY different war/conflict which potentially gives them an out to real-world WW1 comparisons etc. Will be interesting to see.

Only thing that gives me pause is that if they wanted to make an old school action-heavy set piece shooter, it would be so much easier and simple to do WW2

Dice doing D-day or Stalingrad or Midway in Frostbite with environmental destruction? That's an easy sell

But WWI? Why choose that, take on the challenge of making the first big WWI shooter ever? When WW2 is so better suited for what people expect?

So that gives me a modicum of hope that it might be more mature and realistic

If anyone is looking for a WW1 game with a good narrative I highly recommend Valiant Hearts. Its an interesting puzzle game that also provides history on the conflict.

Love how people are downplaying the game's campaign when we only have a poster with setting details lol.

i actually dont love it and it kind of makes my stomach turn. sigh....
