If anyone is looking for a WW1 game with a good narrative I highly recommend Valiant Hearts. Its an interesting puzzle game that also provides history on the conflict.

I really liked VH. The tunnel warfare bit was unsettling.

I installed that on my One a few weeks ago and intend to play it soon, looks great but I know it's supposed to be a real feel trip.

"Alternate history" simply destroys all the excitement I'd have for a Battlefield game in a WW1 setting. What a shame.

This game is a bitter disappointment. It starts great, but it loses its way very soon,
when the narrative tries to imply that the germans were basically the devil, with a fictitious general and all kinds of high tech flying fortresses
, in a cartoonish manner. If they had stick to the History, would have been a great experience overall.

Here is a link to a video that you will love. It will take you to what Carlin describes as the most important singular event in history. A ripple effect that changes everything, and which causes later wars to happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k41yYTFZbWU

Watch it. If you're going to do anything this weekend, let it be listening to this entire thing. It's better than you can possible comprehend.

With a recommendation like that how can I not

Only thing that gives me pause is that if they wanted to make an old school action-heavy set piece shooter, it would be so much easier and simple to do WW2

Dice doing D-day or Stalingrad or Midway in Frostbite with environmental destruction? That's an easy sell

But WWI? Why choose that, take on the challenge of making the first big WWI shooter ever? When WW2 is so better suited for what people expect?

So that gives me a modicum of hope that it might be more mature and realistic

I had the same thought. WWI is not at all the easy path to take here compared to WWII.

That could mean that they're going to give the setting a lot of respect. However...it could also mean that they'll feel a lot of pressure to "action-up" the setting and actually pull it further away from reality than a WWII game would have been pulled from it's respective reality.

I hope it's the former, obviously. The fact that they seem to be doing something with the Harlem Hellfighters (and seems to have one as the key figure on the boxart!) actually makes a really good first impression. We'll see in a hour I guess!

I apologize for the expression I used. But I felt like you were implying that just because I didn't know the details how could I say what I did when you can comb through this thread and find a lot of people not interested in it from what they know or think they know so far from the leaks and not get bomb rushed for there opinion and I don't know about anyone else but "lol" standd for laughing out loud or laugh out loud and I don't recall saying anything funny in my original post.So like I pointed out I've post other times in this thread and basically said why I felt the way I did but some reason my opinion is silly.

You don't need to take "Lol" so seriously. People use it all the time and it doesn't mean I'm trying to make a joke out of you, it means I think what you said is silly so I'm laughing to myself.

I do think your opinion is silly. I think saying "I'll pass" on a game that hasn't even had an official reveal for its main title yet is really shortsighted and serves as a kneejerk reaction to something you might actually come around to enjoying. Yours was the only post I saw that had a reaction like this, so I only responded to yours. If I had seen the others, I would have clumped them into the same post and responded to you all.

It makes a lot more sense to see what they've offering before automatically deciding it's not for you before you've even given them a chance to show you what they're offering.

Gonna have a hard time getting over that stupid fucking name. Will buy Infinite Warfare instead.

This, for example, is really short sighted. BF is all about the gameplay and even if it ends up being called "Battlefield: Ancient Trenchfare", it won't matter if they make a great game.

There's no way in hell but I hope after the tittle card the screen goes black then Beta available now fades in.

Also a little off topic but I hope this pushes Ubisoft to release a new Valiant Hearts game.

Anyone else happy that dogfights will no longer feature heatseekers?

Now that you mention it that's great. The main reason I never tried Jets in BF4 (apart from sucking hard at them) was the constant flare/lock on just making it tedious. Dogfighting back in BF1943 was one of my favorite things to do in that game.

Maybe EA sees WW2 as just a dead genre now, and is a no no?

So does this mean that the PS4 version will suffer?

Or the lead platform is a new Xbox and in the case I doubt the PS4 would suffer from it.

Seriously though, I don't think you've anything to worry about. But I am a hit surprised, cause didn't Phil Spencer say they wouldnt do these kind of deals anymore? Oh what am I saying, we dont even know if there will be any exclusivity.

+1 on this. Valiant Hearts is one of my favorite games ever.

I hope the campaign, if it's pure WW1, shows the horrors of war.

I'm a Junior in High School, and I live in the U.S., and I have no clue what you are talking about.
Freshman Year (World History): Talked about WWI for 2 weeks, got a test on it and talked a lot about post-WWI concepts (League of Nations). Spent 4-5 days on WWII, hardly covered it.
Junior Year (AP US History): Talked about WWI for at least 3 weeks, had 2 quizzes and a test on it, then spent another week on post-WWI crap (Article X, league of nations again, Isolationist nature of US, Great Depression). Spent at most 2 weeks on WWII. Had one quiz and a test.

Maybe elementary/middle school teaches more WWII than I, but I can tell you right now that in High School nowadays that is total bullshit.
Tons of people in this thread have said the same as me. Your school district is weird fam. I'm not even old. I just had finals like 2 days ago.

Super excited for this. I think the WWI setting + less modular weapons will allow for more specific class differentiation, and their destruction tech applied to trench warfare could be incredible.

Only thing I'm gonna miss is the ever digitally degrading audio of the BF theme. If they kept up their modern warfare trajectory, it'd be reduced to a brown noise pulse at this point.

Well, if what the insider said is true (everything else he said was true), it sounds like they heavily scaled back the alternative history stuff during development. It might have been something like Wolfenstein The New Order when they started out, but it turned into a more historical WW1 shooter in the end. The first being something more fitting for current DICE in terms of tone.

I hope I am wrong and DICE gets the tone right where it's something more in the line of BF42, Vietnam and BF2.
