Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Paradox games certainly do not have the tendency to get "dumbed down" (I hate this term, it's so fucking stupid), quite the opposite.
EU4 is more complex now than it ever was.

To be more specific, I hope the combat system becomes similar to Hearts of Iron's combat system. I despise EU and CK combat systems.

are all giant bomb quick looks this annoying? fucking amateur comedy hour over here.

I've not watched many, but yes. From memory.

Being a seasoned veteran of 4 Quill Lets Plays and 5 All Hail the Blorg videos, I know more than the guy showing them the game somehow too.

Austin is not a specialised streamer or a paradox dev though. I liked his outlook, his discovery of space gerrymandering was really funny.

do any of the let's plays so far have any early encounters with empires that aren't completely useless at war? so far the military ai looks so pathetic that you would probably have to fill the galaxy with advanced empires to get any challenge.

i assume they are playing on pre-release versions, so perhaps these are the same problems that the blorg stream had and will be fixed by monday.
The AI seems to be okay at staying competitive with the player in tech and ship design. It's maybe not so good at fighting wars. After I watched a few videos, it seems like the AI didn't always know what to do with its fleet. I suspect, like in any strategic war game, it can be out-maneuvered by an experienced player. That's always the most difficult part of AI design in a game of this magnitude though and the player will always have an enormous advantage here. Another problem is that it seems too willing to give up. Shenryyr easily vassalized an empire of equivalent strength because it was off fighting someone else and didn't place much priority on protecting its planets. If I remember correctly, the AI accepted his demands in the middle of a battle, even though it still had a chance to win (5k vs. his 7k, with another 5k in the system), because of the war score. Maybe the AI shouldn't give up like that as long as it still has a large fleet somewhere. In fact, it should be really hard to vassalize someone, because as far as I could tell there's no size constraint on vassalization like there is in EU4.

1. I hate the term 'dumbed down' as well. Strikes me as snobby & elitist.

2. I remember leading up to EU4 launch, Paradox talked about how they were working to make the game more accessible & user-friendly compared to EU3. Quality of Life stuff. Improved UI, etc. They assured long-time fans that no was was getting left behind. Of course people freaked out anyway, thinking Paradox were selling out somehow. Abandoning their core base to appease the masses.

Well we all know how that story went. EU4 retained its granola crunchiness. It also implemented a more advanced & sophisticated user experience, making the game as elegant as it was deep.

Paradox has gone on record saying Stellaris was going to continue molding accessibility into the very complex and newcomer off-putting world of the Grand Strategy genre. This time by highlighting more digestible 4X gameplay elements for early game and easing the user into Grand Strat formulas mid to late game.

If EU3 to EU4 is any indication, I think we're going to be just fine in regards to the held sanctity of the GS genre's desired complexity in Stellaris. While not a direct 1:1 comparison, it illustrates that Paradox maintains goodwill with their core base through understanding their genre needs. I have full confidence in them.

3. Less than 48 hours!!! OMG!!!

That seems like a pipe dream though. HoI is a combat game, all of it is centered almost entirely around the combat. No other Paradox game has that type of combat (and intentionally so).

Wowzers. That's condescending.

While Giant Bomb's Austin Walker may not live and breath Paradox like popular YouTubers such as quil18, he still knows his stuff with the genre. He brings forth a knowledge that is a cut above non-genre vets. He also has a uncanny ability to disseminate complex genre concepts to a wider audience with a sense of enthusiasm and humor that I think is golden.

I wouldn't be so quick to sell them short. They generally do incredible work across the board.

I'm not expecting the same but something similar in principle. So far, Stellaris seems to have the second most sophisticated combat system below HoI. So I have high hopes for future DLCs to improve on it.

East coast bombers are annoying because of the amateur comedian shtick and unfunny rants. (Edit, IMHO of course)

So yeah, despite Austin being a huge talent, I cannot listen to them because of the forced 'comedy'. Swap Dan out for Austin West Coast, and I'd be happy.

Man, I leave on a 2 week trip tomorrow and this would be the PERFECT offline game for me to bring. Alas I won't have access to internet there.

Hurts my heart. Shame there's no preload.

Maaaan I'm so psyched for this game. I was planning wait for reviews and a couple weeks of patches, but Austin's story about gerrymandering Space Crab elections made me preorder it.

That's fine, its more little bits that I would have thought he'd know, having played the game enough to be showing the others what it's about. I've had the same thoughts about another of theirs some time ago but I can't remember which. Never really been on the GiantBomb train though to be fair.

Quill18 just started streaming a new game

Wiz and cKnoor joining him soon

Just about to start ep 6 of his pre release videos. Been cool to see use of the Wormhole travel and it looks like a great way to play, being able to jump huge distances and examine a lot of potential systems very quickly.

Wow, that's tiny. I guess having no FMVs and cutscenes really does cut down the size.

Most games of this type of genre are small when it comes to the size. EU 4 is only around 2-3 GB iirc and Galactic Civilizations 3 is around 7 GB. So I’m guessing Stellaris will be of similar size.

Man I hope Quill makes CharlZie a planet in every one of his games going forward. Casual $1,000 donation.

Cool talk with Wiz and cknoor there, though. I like when Wiz talks about some of the AI routines going on.

I was thinking, guys. Would you like me to make a picture with the avatars of all the GAF fans of Stellaris? Something like this?

So Quill is right beside an advanced Fanatical Purifier race. According to Martin from Paradox who was at the stream, these guys conquer, planets, migrate one pop of their race over and purify the rest. Seem to be some nice guys.

Wondering if the GAF Stellaris community might want to try and get a name list put together for in game characters? You can use your own list of names when creating a race right?

Would be a great idea. Quill18 did it in his game just now with his Twitch subscribers.

That would be awesome. OT tomorrow, game on Monday. I'm so excited. Just wish I had it this weekend as it's a bachelor weekend.

This, too, would be great.

If you click the number of replies next to this thread it will give you a list of everyone who's posted in the thread. It should be pretty easy to drop that list into the game. If I were playing as the SpaceGAF Empire, though, what I'd really want is the NeoGAF logo imported into the game for it. Hopefully that's easy enough to do.

I'd say EU3 -> 4 is an noticeable step down in complexity. CK1 -> 2 was pretty much just an increase in accessibility though so I don't know if it's really a trend. I guess we'll see with Vic3. (pls Paradox)

EU4 kind of lost complexity in its original release since back then it was basically EU3 in a new engine with simplified economic gameplay and Monarch points. Honestly I still don't like the Monarch point system even now.

Nevertheless the expansions and patches since then have gone a long way in giving some meat and complexity to EU4's core design and making it very different from its predecessor, so kudos to Paradox for that.

updated the picture, keep 'em coming, lads! I want to see a ton of people there so we can proudly display it in the OT!

Put me down, Still have not come up with a name though. Usually think of it when I'm actually creating my Empire.

Just a joke name is enough, mate :D

Do you honestly think I will call my empire "Kainé's harem"? :D

I probably won't be able to play for a week or two after launch, but I wouldn't mind being included, perhaps squeezed into a corner. I'll take the Microsoft Galaxy, please.
