Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Just finished it. Fantastic game. Every few minutes I thought to myself "jesus, this game is pretty". Some times the environments look photorealistic.

My brother got his copy yesterday, delivered early by The Game Collection (UK) so I went round and played for around an hour.
My god, this game is insane. It just grabbed hold of me and didn't let go for that hour, everything is of the upmost quality - the voice work, the animations (shout out to the facial work, its incredible), the environments, the graphics, everything!

The game controls very well, the controls are tight and responsive and nothing feels clunky of awkward. I was a bit concerned about how the grapple hook would work when I saw the trailers but it actually controls very nice and doesn't feel too fussy if you know what I mean.

I don't want to touch on the story, mainly because I am one hour in but from what I have seen it's premise is strong and I am digging the new characters.

The graphics deserve some extra words. This is the hands down the best looking game I have ever seen and to think it's coming out of a games console is just madness. You start the game and you're like, this is beautiful and then it just shows you something different and you think "it can't get better than this" and then like some sort of sick joke, it does. I don't know how they do it, but it's almost as if they've created a game where they've managed to ramp up the beauty and technical wizardry of the environments which works in harmony with the story. At one stage I literally said "wow, wtf" to my tv screen. I could not comprehend the level of graphical fidelity and animation that was being consumed by my eyeballs. There are just not enough words, you have to see it to believe it.

Oh my fucking god.

OH.MY.FUCKING.GOD!!!!!!!

The fucking E3 set piece?? FUCK.

I cannot come up with the right words to describe the experience of actually playing that shit on your own TV yourself.

The build up to it is fucking crazy. I swear to god I am not lying, I'm literally shaken up. I feel like I just got off a fucking roller coaster. Idk what the fuck happened just now but that shit was straight up sensory overload.

That shit had to be the best fucking thing I've ever seen in a video game, scratch that entertainment medium period. Nothing else has ever come close.

Youtube videos and text doesn't do it justice.

Actually playing it does. It's slightly different so even if you saw it, it's as if it was my first time seeing it.

I had the PS Golds on...

The sound, the fucking intensity of everything was at fucking 11.

This is literally not just the best "Uncharted" set piece, this is the best video game set piece, action scene ever fucking made. I swear to god, your jaw will drop or your money back guaranteed!

Oh my god. This game is worth the hype brehs. GOTG material here just for that shit alone.

AHHHHH Fuck yo I'm literally pumped full of adrenaline and it's 4AM!

I cannot even imagine that scene running at 60fps on PS4Neo.

No, now it's just tedious open level wandering around
lol only sometimes, in some levels
.

Combat, if anything, is less frequent this time around for most chapters.

I only found the early first open area kind of boring.

Scotland?? That chapter was boring. I think the cloudiness and look of the area was boring. The end of it was boring.

Madagascar?? No, it was very fun. I loved it. I found so many optional things and it just was beautiful.

It's done.
The last chapter and the boss fight were so damn good. Dat graphics :D
It's the best Uncharted IMO. It's not as ... "happy"? as the older ones, but great. There are just 2 things I didn't like THAT much:

- the beginning
- too much forest-level for me, cut a little (yeah, the game was maybe an bit to long for me) and it would be great.

I loved that rope, had some really great moments in the second half.
It gets better and better with almost each, so great moments in this game!

Can you replay combat sections without replaying the whole game?

I thought Uncharted 2 and 3 were good, but ultimately a bit boring to play due to the.. Well, janky might be a bit harsh, but not very interesting gameplay. Glad to see U4 is much improved, starting to get pretty excited in fact!

There is an encounter select option in the menu

This is unambiguously the best looking console game of all time, and frankly maybe I need a better computer at this point but I have a pretty darn good one and play modern releases at top, if not always max settings (usually resolution not 1440p or 4k something), and I cannot say I've personally witnessed a PC game that has looked this good either, linear or not.

This is just wizardry of some alternate dimension shit.

Holy shit. I'm so glad I never watched the extended E3 demo, that chase was fucking incredible, easily my favorite thing so far.

I found the E3 setpiece a bit frustrating because the car controls aren't great. Plus the truck kept hitting me off track which meant I got stuck, had to reverse, etc.

Wasn't that cinematic for me haha.

i just finished the intro, i gotta say i'm really disappointed, after reading all those impressions about how good the intro is i was expecting something like MGS V's intro, don't get me wrong it's not bad it's good but not THAT good

Your opinion on the game (I caved) seems to have matched my prediction, its been a constant down hill of enthusiasm since like day 2. I'm getting MGSV vibes from your impressions. Would you say its similar in the way you were disappointed with that game for its faults?

It is completely and utterly nothing like MGSV.

And IMO you could only come to Wesker's conclusion if you played with markings on in UC4.

I'm playing with all markings/threat indicators off, and it is fucking amazing. Like when you get spotted, you never realise where from, and it turns into this big emergent gunfight where you're pegging it through amazing ruins or across clifffaces with gunfire chasing you and you just manage to get cover/break sight before you die, etc...

It's fucking amazing

The fucking E3 set piece?? FUCK.

Yes.

> It was incredible to watch.
> It was literally unbelievable to play.

I was shouting. I was screaming. I was laughing.

You don't realise just how much you're in control of that scene every instant. You're in control of climbing up/down the rope, where to swing, which guys to shoot, which cars to jump to. It's all so dynamic and 100% fucking thrilling from the first moment.

Just incredible.

I only found the early first open area kind of boring.

Scotland?? That chapter was boring. I think the cloudiness and look of the area was boring. The end of it was boring.

I live there:(

I loved that chapter...

You want to know the sad truth? They made it look better than it actually looks. Well, some of it.

You serious that you didn't like the end?
With climbing the pillars in the room while it was collapsing, the hint of weird supernatural shit down below, the crazy escape with Sam down the cliffs and into the plane
? That shit was great.

Also shout out to Sam Drake and Troy Baker. He is fucking fantastic. I think he's given me as many laughs as Nate has. And the writing between the two of them is flawless, they legit feel like brothers - like two people who have spent way too much time together and have that completely on-the-level patter.

Madagascar chase scene/E3 clip is the Mad Max game we deserve. Naughty Dog nailed the tense and kinetic setpieces so well with that encounter.

Their best setpiece yet tbh.

I can safely say it's the best set-piece in gaming. Not that many other developers are reaching for this kind of thing.

Man these impressions ... Fucking Hermes, last time I use a site that uses them when I want something in a timely manner on the weekend.

I cannot wait to finish work tomorrow. Glad to hear the patch can download in the background while you play the game.

Edit: yeah MGSV intro was probably the worst bit of gaming I've played in a long time. I was expecting something mind blowing when I heard he hype but it was the more tedious than most of The Order. And then they have the audacity to make you sit through it twice.

Just bought myself a new Sony 49" 4k TV... Been wanting to upgrade for a while, so thought Uncharted 4 would be the best game to christen it with :D

Roll on Tuesday!

Would you say difficulty mode matters a great deal in this game? I'm only gonna have a few hours to play this next week and never really enjoyed the higher difficulties in previous Uncharted titles, so I was thinking of trying to beat this on Easy...

I liked it first time through, the second time though, I hated it.

I agree with this, doesn't come close to the others, especially not MGS2s.

I hated it the first time experiencing it too. Like seriously, MGS games have conditioned me to "play" the intro. MGSV wrestled the controls away from me and when I did have control, I was being led in a corridor in a scripted as hell event. I hate it when games treat me like an idiot.

Just play it on easy if you want.

MGSV was like the antithesis of the entire game. Scripted, cinematic in all the wrong ways, overly long, boring, psychological. The rest of the game is so open (to a fault) that the intro just does nothing to prepare you for it. Ground Zeroes was a better intro (and a more interesting story).

I was baffled at all of the positive reactions to it honestly - games like The Order are pulled through the wringer for that shit, but it was acceptable in MGS.

I'm glad Uncharted 4 is nothing like that at the beginning.

I definitely agree, it's why I eventually hated it. I just really liked the whole spectacle of it first time through, it was one of the reasons I started to really hate the open mission design about half way through, once I realized it was the only memorable story moment the game has had so far.

Finish, IT WAS PERFECT. They literally did everything I wanted. Definitely surprised (and glad) that some of my darkest predictions didn't make it. It was an Uncharted game through and through. The graphics and the gameplay were superb. This game has definitely has taught me to emphasize better self control and to go on black out for games that I'm hyped for (should have never seen the extended gameplay from E3, nor the trailers after that). Also this game is LONG, holy shit, the NDC has spoiled me, Uncharted games always felt like less than 10 hour games. This felt almost open world like in terms of length. My only complain (nitpick) from the masterpiece U2 was the boss battle and they nailed it here. Also I think they also nailed the enemies, their AI and their encounters, it never felt like I was fighting too many.

10 out of 10. Hell it's an 11 after I get my hands on MP.

Bring on that new I.P./TLOU 2 ND, you guys are killing it.

P.S. only managed to get 59/109 treasures, jesus I even tried looking for them, which I never really did in past Uncharted games.

This game is just….everything I wanted. Uncharted with gameplay turned up to a completely new level thanks to the new tools, techniques, AI and improved level design, and then with face melting visuals and vistas, a rich, beautifully paced and constantly exciting adventure, with even more emotive characters and narrative. So many times it's left me speechless or stunned. ND also did a good job of keeping a lot of the game under wraps, so props to them for that.

Thing is, I don't actually want it to end. I think I'm on Chapter 18 now, and the thought of finishing it is unbelievably bitter sweet. No other game is likely to achieve what Uncharted 4 is doing here, not now, maybe even ever, that includes Last of Us 2, which is naturally going to be a far more grounded, less grandiose and less epic affair. In that sense, the fact that this is the last Uncharted from ND is quite literally depressing. I'm just not ready to throw in the towel yet, and give up on these amazing, globe trotting, adrenaline filled, emotional roller coasters. I can't see any other developer taking on this franchise being able to improve, let alone replicate what ND has here. In that sense, any new Uncharted by a new studio will undoubtedly fall short.

Reading impression from you guys, I think ND do make the job of handling Uncharted franchise uneasy for any studio that Sony choose to replace ND. I have no doubt the next Uncharted game will have lot of pressure to match fan expectation.

You can look at my old impressions post if you like

I've always played these games on Hard, but for Uncharted 4 I found Hard to be breaking the flow a bit too much, so I bumped it down to Normal and actually had a much better time. It was so smooth and satisfying and the journey just swam along beautifully.

It will be an amazing journey either way. Just go for Easy or Explorer if your time is tight.

Explorer is like super duper easy. It will probably be really satisfying, too.

Just be warned, the start is indeed a little slow. It's sort of like Last of Us in that respect, but the momentum build up works well with the overall pacing imo. Of course some will disagree and want something more consistently action packed.

The only game I can see topping this as my GOTY 2016 is TLG, and even then Ueda's gotta bust some major chops to surpass U4.

Also, I find myself frequently stopping dead in my tracks and admiring the scenery porn. Scenery porn everywhere. The graphics are so drop dead gorgeous at times that it blows my mind.
