Starter list?

1. Charmander
2. Cyndaquil
3. Treeko
4. Turtwig
5. Oshawott(had the best evo's but ugliest starter)
6. Froakie
7. Litten or Popplio

I've warmed up to the starters now. I think they're alright but just super forgettable. I'd actually say that they're underdesigned more than anything.

Just woke up and saw the news, and as expected of an odd-numbered generation, it's hitting all the right notes for me. This is the first time since Black and White where I legit can't decide which starter I want, though I'm leaning towards Popplio. Getting those Oshawott vibes, yo. AND THE MOON LEGENDARY IS EVERYTHING I NEVER KNEW I WANTED <3

Getting strong Gen 3 (as a whole) and Gen 5 vibes from this. I already know this is going to tie with Gen 5 for me as my second favorite gen. We'll see if it even comes close to Gen 3 after the game comes out though. ^-^

Well, they have said that they think customization is a Kalos thing when commenting on why it wasn't in ORAS:

So if customization is returning, you know what else has to return, right?

#KalosConfirmed

... no, but they probably saw the backlash of the lack of it in ORAS and put it in?

My concern is that the player characters look just way too generic

We making lists?

1. Squirtle
2. Cyndaquil
3. Treeko
4. Chimchar
5. Snivy
6. Froakie
7. Depending on evolutions, looking like Rowlet.

So since Gen 4 the starters seemingly have shared a theme.

Sinnoh: Legends and Myths (The World Turtle, Sun Wukong, Napoleon Bonaparte)
Unova: Culture (Europe, China, Japan)
Kalos: RPG classes (Knight, Mage, Rogue)

So far, could Alola's be circus themed? It seems an odd choice, but we have Rowlet resembling a ring master, Litten perhaps becoming a tiger with the ring of fire representing its type, and Popplio being a straight up circus Sea Lion.
Will be interesting to see how their evolutions play out.

Madness. Rowlet is clearly the best choice. Look at that sideways stare. Dude knows what's up. Gotta wait until we see the evolutions before I finalize my choice though.

Since everyone else is doing it:

I: Bulbasaur
II: Chikorita
III: Mudkip
IV: Chimchar
V: Box'd
VI: Charmander/Torchic tag team yeaaah~ oh wait there are Kalos starters: Froakie
VII: Rowlet

I like the designs of the Sun/Moon legendaries but I'm not sure how I feel about the direction relative to X/Y. I hope we don't end up with Fairy and Dark/Flying legendaries again. I'm really hoping that giant bat is Poison/Flying. Poison's the only type IIRC to still not have a legendary of any kind. I hope the lion is Fire at least.

Misc: Rowlet is the first starter since Bulbasaur to be dual-type. I mean... it's unavoidable for an owl to not be part-flying, but this is def. a departure from the scheme Gamefreak established since gen II.

This island is based on Oahu. This is not the complete region for sure.

Yeah, I was thinking the island they showed looked too small after I took a better look at it. The paved street looks like it's one big city, the starting town is up near the waterfalls RagnarokX pointed out, and maybe one more town past the street, behind the mountains near the starting town. Great find!

Anyway, I like all these starters, especially after looking at their animations and other art. Really shows them off as characters, as others in this thread have said. Not sure who I'll pick.

Blackout starts now lol

Hopping on the bandwagon...
1. Squirtle
2. Totodile
3. Torchic (Treecko in Emerald)
4. Turtwig (Chimchar & Piplup in Platinum)
5. Oshawott
6. Froakie, Torchic, Bulbasaur triple team
7. Rowlet and/or Litten

Also, I don't know if it was pointed out already, but it appears the rival picked the Pokemon weak to yours, which implies it may be a Black/White situation where there's a second rival (that would obviously then pick the Pokemon with the advantage on you). So the dream of the return to a jerkass rival may not yet be dead.

I swear to god, if Kitten doesn't stay on four legs, I'll break something. Fennekin couldve been great as a kyuubi type thing, but instead they put it on two legs and made it ugly as sin. Same with Tepig, I wanted a badass boar and got a weird fat human boar hybrid

I've always been fire, but last gen was the first time I picked water type. I just want the fire design to switch things up a bit

More I think about it, the more I like it.

Someone mention starter typings being

Grass/Flying
Fire/Ghost
Water/Fairy

That works. I really like that. It can match their motifs as well

The fact we already had Ninetales didn't help Fennekin in that regard, but yeah poor Fennekin... Though it's still lame that Ninetales didn't get Psychic typing originally lol. Maybe Mega Ninetales...

I agree. When they make it two legs they tend to give it a "human-like" touch... I prefer when they still look like animals. A tiger-like evolution would be ace!

My concern is that the player characters look just way too generic

Unfortunately, it's easier for a player to project themselves onto a more bland slate (as I will agree that they look like) than onto a more developed, interesting character. If Pokemon sticks to customization, then I have a feeling that this trend will continue. (A problem which could possibly be fixed with a more in-depth customization option.)

So apparently Litten's eyes and forehead mark form the alchemical symbol for Sulfur:

Yea this was brought up earlier in the thread.

I wonder if we can speculate on what its evolutions will be like based on this. I assume the symbol will be a constant.

So it's definitely going to be circus thing. We have I feel hopefully have a musical horn and a tiger and then a badass ringmaster

we makin lists now?

I: Bulbasaur
II: Totodile
III: None ( I was broke and playing diablo 2 full time )
IV: Chimchar
V: Tepig
VI: Froakie
VII: Rowlet

I have no favourite starter type I just go where my heart takes me. And i'm glad that my heart decided against chespin because he would've broken it.

I'm cool with Litten evolving into either a part Ghost, Poison or Dark type, all of which have been rumored at this point. Just not Psychic or Fighting, please. And the evolution should be a tiger, we don't have a tiger pokemon.
