I understand that, and I know this makes me some crazy purist, but I'd much rather have it just break the illusion and display black bars on the side even if it makes things less seamless, or even just give me the option to play the whole thing in 4:3. Awkward framing because of cropping bothers me way more.

I think the best way to do this would be to include an option in the Luca Theater to display the scenes in their original 4:3. It wouldn't break immersion in the main game, and it would also satisfy anyone who wants to see the full uncropped scenes.

Maybe we'll get that in the PS5 re-re-remaster. If not, then...eh. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

AFAIK the most powerful party combo is Tidus, Wakka and Riku. Maybe replace Riku with Auron, I can't remember who the third person is exactly.

This is pretty much end game last optional boss stuff. Except to grind 10+ hours if you want to conquer the optional bosses imo. Probably way more than 10 hours in reality.

Dark Matter becomes the most hated word you'll ever hear.

Tidus, Wakka and Rikku are a good choice to level because they're the only three you can use underwater, so you're pretty much stuck with just them in certain (very limited) sections of the game. Wakka has the most potent overdrive from a damage standpoint. Rikku's is one of the first Celestial weapons you can unlock, so her utility is huge in the middle of the game, and for earning tons of gil trolling Omega Dungeon for Mimics. Auron should always be in your party late game (especially Omega Dungeon) because his celestial has First Strike, and without that you could be ambushed by a Great Marlboro, nailed with every status effect and quickly killed. Tidus, being the main character, has bits that are just him, so you're pretty much locked into leveling him (not that it's a bad thing).

In relation to my previous emulation comment, I guess this would bother me.

Also, did Kingdom Hearts have any prerendered backgrounds? I believe that game was all 3D. No need to re-render anything. Just raise the native resolution and draw some better textures.

KH doesn't have any prerendered backgrounds, no, but I was talking about the FMV cutscenes there. It does have a few of those, and the ones in the HD remasters were real widescreen, as in an expanded image to the sides.

Totally get that's not always feasible though.

This would make me happy too, yeah. I mostly just want to have access to the full original FMVs so that would do.

Don't think any of this is gonna happen though, I'm not expecting any changes from the PS4 version like that. Just expressing my hopes here.

He's really only useful if you know what you're doing, which makes him useless on a blind playthrough.

If you're doing the international version, you can make him a thief early on, and steal some rather over-powered items like Petrify grenades; steal a few grenades and he can 1-hit KO mobs.

Even after Rikku joins, he's good for helping to steal items for beefing up Aeons and making them over-powered.

But...that's kinda it, really.

From a narrative perspective; he's basically there to make the party larger and be a confidant. He adds almost nothing.

If you go the Thief route he'll also have access to Reflect, Curaga, and Holy much sooner than Yuna. He also makes great use of Black Magic Spheres.

Even then, the difference between Wakka/Tidus and the rest of the party is very small. Hyper Mighty G is incredibly good though.

By the way, Japanese Wakka is voiced by

just lol if you want to hear Wakka any other way than as Bender's voice
DiMaggio sounds nothing like Bender while playing Wakka, lol

Omg, I still haven't finished my replays of FF7 and FF9 on steam. But man, I can't wait to do a replay of this with Japanese audio.

I bought a Greatest Hits PS2 copy last year with the intention of finally giving this game a proper chance, but never got around to actually playing it. Guess I'll be playing this one instead :P It's great to see Square-Enix supporting PC so much! This bodes well for Dragon Quest XI coming to PC.

Well, turns out it's not really going to be a stealth release anyway.

Good to hear that they're doing a live streaming for this.

It's still pretty stealthy to "announce" a game couple of days before it releases. Keep in mind that this is the first time anyone from Square has even mentioned it.

Well, yeah. I actually found their first sentence hilarious..

"As some of you may have heard already.."

They probably timed the release to be around the same time as people were finishing up the shiny new version of FF9. pretty sure 10 comes after 9 anyway if we're working in base ten.

This is relevant to our interests.

I don't know if I can watch it, but someone needs to ask about resolutions, dual audio and soundtrack toggle and stuff.
You know, to confirm.

Dual audio is confirmed on the Steam page, not sure about the other stuff

I hope Auto Save can be turned off. I hate auto save in games. There are times I'm just screwing around and don't want to save.

Well, I highly doubt it means you won't be able to manual save anymore.

Just ignore the auto save if you don't want them.

does this mean I can 100% the game without having to play it? the future is here!

Autosave?

That's pretty cool if it does it after battles/cutscenes and stuff, assuming it still allows manual saving too of course.

I feel like all games should have the option of both, unless it's used for gameplay reasons (say Alien Isolations choice of only having save points).

Also changing the encounter settings sounds pretty damn good too, maybe not quite as customisable as Bravely Default, but still nice.

It will still allow manual saves. In FFIX it basically autosaves nearly every story moment and area transition, so it was pretty constant.

OMG I can't wait.

Also just before every boss fight. So depending on auto save alone can possibly ruin our game, as in badly chosen equipment, party member, or totally under-leveled and other possibilities. Save manually like usual, auto save is just a bonus.

You'll still have to dodge 200 lightning bolts.

I dreaded this when I replayed the PS4 version but...

It's actually not that bad. There's actually some spots where you can force a lightning strike, so it's just a matter of concentration/removing distractions.

In all seriousness though, someone is going to find the value for lightning dodges within the first few days of the game releasing and make a cheat engine modification that makes it so 1 lightning dodge equals 200 or something.

When I played the PS3 version, I didn't find it necessary but it'll be a convenience for those who just want to get it out of the way.

I suppose the same applies for freezing the Butterfly catching timer, as well making the Chocobo Racing mini-game always result in a time of 0:00

I don't blame some folks who do this considering the 132 hours I've spent on the PS3 game just to do 100%.

2x turbo speed? Auto-battles? More frequent encounters?

Fuck yeah that all sounds fantastic. Glad to see they took the IX fast forward criticism to heart.

It's not like FFX has slow combat like FF IX did. Hell if anything in regards for most turn based combat goes, FFX is arguably one of the fastest in terms of immediate response for characters executing moves and ending their action upon player confirming a command.

You can literally get 3 to 4 basic attacks done in FFX compared to a single character waiting for their ATB gauge to fill to act again in FF IX, and FF X-2 at times can even be faster with multiple members being able to act simultaneously at once without waiting for another action to finish first.

If Square-Enix ever decides to revisit turned based combat mechanics in a future FF title, hopefully the pacing closer resembles FFX or X-2 as opposed to the very slow FF IX.

FFX was a a joy to play after FFIX, the sleeping pill game.

I have yet to experience FFX-2, but the combat system is known to be even better.

Okay? I'm not sure what your point is. The fast forward boost in IX got shit for being just on or off with no in-between and being way, way too fast for regular gameplay. It was too fast to be truly useful for the most part. 2x speed is nice cause you can still actually play the game with no problems at that speed. Gonna be nice for going through old areas, low-level grinding, tedious stuff like that.

FF X-2's combat system is ATB like the FF4 through 9, however what separates it from the previous ATB systems. Is that character commands can overlap. So you have Yuna and Rikku both attack. Rikku won't wait for Yuna to finish her action. They will both immediately attack at approximately the same time.

Enemies also have a sort of hit stun / hit delay when they are being attacked. So you can time your characters actions in queue so when they hit the enemy they will keep the enemy in a constant hit stun so they cannot act. In fact this is actually a very good strategy against some special boss enemies who are charging up a particularly dangerous attack and you can delay it as long as possible or outright defeat them before the move comes out.

Also much like FF3 / 5 is the return of the Job Class with a twist. There is small sphere grids called the Garment Grid each character equips, comprised of 3 to 6 slots each.

6-GG01.jpg

You fill these empty nodes with classes like Warrior, Blackmage, White Mage, Thief, etc.

During combat on a characters turn you press L2 and brings up the grid they have equipped and you can move to an adjacent space to change their current class in the middle of combat on the fly.

Like a Black Mage is fighting an enemy immune to magic damage and can with right grid setup immediately change into a Warrior to adjust to the situation accordingly.

If Square-Enix ever revisits the job class system for a single player FF again, I wonder how they will handle it.

Okay? I'm not sure what the big deal about me addressing the difference of FF9's and 10's combat speed being an issue.

Fast forward could be useful for older areas like stocking up on specific weapon drops with various effects or specific spheres in question. My point was never the issue of fast forward but the gulf of difference combat speed between FF9 and 10. I don't see why is even a problem?

Well it had absolutely nothing to do with what I posted, for one lol

I mean there's obviously no problem dude, I'm not sure how you even came to that conclusion, your post just confused me.
