Plot is meh so far for this little arc, but the episode looked pretty great, no really off model shots or anything and some cool action. I guess we won't see Vegeta go blue in these three episodes since Vegeta lost his power, unless he copies Goku and that gives Vegeta his power back. Excited to see Gotenks go SSJ3 finally.

Also, Jesus fucking Christ, this episode had an astronomical number of artists on it, like fuckin 8 times the normal amount of animators on a normal anime episode. I feel pretty confident in my theory that they're just going to throw fuck loads of staff at every episode now because of the bank Dragon Ball is making.

I haven't seen this latest episode yet but I feel I should just interject here. An episode having a million staff on it isn't always a good thing. It can often mean a rushed production with a need for a larger staff to just do anything to try to finish episodes on time. If you look at the work at some of the most stellar animated episodes of TV anime, the number of staff (especially animation directors) usually isn't gigantic - often because they had a good production schedule which meant enough time to get shit done well. Again, I haven't seen the latest episode but as a general rule for TV anime: more staff doesn't necessarily mean a better looking or produced episode.

hopefully, I hope these fucks are blown to smithereens within the first five minutes of the episode so we can move on with this arc and get to future trunks
Damn.

Savage.

Animation was great.

Episode was kind of eh. The alien designs are bad. I was really hoping Super wouldn't take so strongly after Xenoverse/Heroes looking stuff and be its own thing, but doesn't look like that's happening.

Just in time for the Future Trunks arc.

That is going to be so fucking good.

Nice little episode. Glad SSJ3 is still around... even if it is Gotenks. I like the form. Brutish.

so much for vegeta being the smarter fighter that doesn't let his guard down

God fucking damn it Toei/Toriyama
When has Vegeta ever been the smarter fighter? The only time he ever wins a fight is when he can brute force it. Suppose against fat Buu he actually used his head for once, but that was more the exception.

Plus it was a liquid that covered him.

I thought it was a great episode.

Looked pretty good, was fun. I also like the copy thing since we know it won't drag on.

Super happy to see Gotenks back next week.

Looooved Trunks with the sword, FTrunks is definitely gonna give him the sword at the end of next arc.

Not been able to watch yet - somebody able to sum up why this episode was weird? Be as spoileriffick as you like.

There was nothing weird.

It had Goten and Trunks locked inside Monaka's spaceship, they ended on some alien world, there some old guy was being attacked by invaders, Goten and Trunks helped but the invaders took Monaka hostage and they were forced to stop fighting.

The invaders were looking for a " super powerful water " of sorts. They mistakenly assumed the water would make them stronger. Turns out the water is sentient and has the ability to absorb one's energy and make a copy of that person.

Bulma asks Jaco and Vegeta to go look for Trunks and Goten.

Vegeta destroys easily the copies and rescues Goten and Trunks. But the water sneaks behind him and absorbs him.

Vegeta is left without energy and his dark Vegeta copy stands before him.

We've come a long way since episode 5, that's for sure. Haha.

People will never ever let go of episode 5, will they ?

Despite the fact that it wasn't finished when aired ?

Like, episode 1 looks as good as episode 44.

Final episode 5 isn't even bad at all. It had some pretty decent stuff.

The worst of super was FnF. I personally still haven't recovered from monkey Gohan and Goku vs Frieza.

But as for now, Toei is using the extra staff they have (from cancelled/ended shows) on Dragon Ball Super and One Piece exclusively.

So the quality should be more consistent visually from now on.

There is no hostility in my message.

I just wish people would stop bringing up episode 5 on every single page for the various reasons enumerated.

I don't understand why Kid Trunks is so weak and still reliant on fusion at this point in his life. Wasn't Vegeta obsessed with making him stronger when he was first introduced? Seems like that Saiyan from the other universe got more training than trunks has in this series

Trunks and Goten and less motivated than Gohan

Why isn't Vegeta wearing that dark grey uniform anymore?

Hint: I don't watch this show.

The show didn't really give any reason for it. Goku also dropped out of his new lighter gi back to his weighted one that he wore through most of Z. I think they might have done this just because these outfits are featured in the opening, so it'd be odd to go a long time without them in the show.

That's not really true. Vegeta didn't even know that he had become a SSJ until right before the tournament in the Buu Saga. Either way, we already had a scene in Super where Vegeta complained about Trunks slacking and relying on fusion, and telling him to train to become stronger by himself, but Trunks' reaction was just being disappointed, rather than showing any willingness to do what Vegeta said. Goten and Trunks were slacking from training in the end of Z, so there's no chance we'd get them dedicated to training unless they decide to officially throw away the end of Z or we go past it, when they could do anything they want.

I don get what they are trying to do with Goten and Trunks then... Are they just comic relief at this point? Both should be stronger than Gohan was at this age but they seem less capable... And I'm talking solo not fused. Unless they are both just super codependent. Going back to Trunks, it seems incredibly odd that he would be lazy or unwilling to train given how
Ambitious both his parents are.

I feel like this episode had some fun ideas on paper but the execution wasn't good. Everything felt rushed. I know this is just an inbetween arc but they could've easily expanded the exposition of what's going on on this planet. Seems the next ep will have more info, at least.

Also, honestly... I think I would've just had Goten and Trunks take care of everything in this scenario. Bringing in Goku & Vegeta again for the millionth time just seems so boring. This could've easily been a mini-arc that gave Gotenks time to shine and the viewers a break from Goku and Vegeta.

Yep, it's a wasted opportunity. Could have been something similar to Garlic Jr. with other characters saving the day. Trunks and Goten seem to always be getting saved from something... It's really predictable now.

Animation was simply gorgeous. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and all episodes from now on will look this good.

Poor Vegeta, having to watch his copy get a shot at beating Goku.

Super has had a bad schedule from the beginning, this is why the quality of the show is all over the place. The schedule seems to be slowly improving but the fact that Toei is suddenly throwing lots of animators on episodes says they want the show to look better right away.

It's especially weird with them because it's not like SS3 Gotenks is a slouch... that's one of the strongest characters in the series lol

If they wanted to do a plot where weaker characters need saving there's plenty of humans to choose from.

Gotenks isn't serious though, is the problem.

Sigh I give up episode had moments but it doesn't mean Jack shit. Can't even let characters have their moments in "filler". Handling multiple characters will never be a strong point of db

You're right about the awful schedule it had. It's gonna be hard to find the references, it was all on Kanzenshuu back then.

But they decided to make Super in a stupidly short amount of time.

They had NO plans regarding what would air after Dragon Ball Z Buu - Kai.

Dragon Ball Kai was born because they wanted a new DBZ series, but didn't want to do it without the involvement of Toriyama. When he accepted to do the movies outline, they offered him to do the same thing for a series, which he agreed to. (knowing them, they probably had been asking for years so they jumped at the opportunity)

They decided to make DBSuper after seeing the incredible success of FnF in the theaters, only a few months before the end of DBZ - Buu Kai.

That is insane. Especially with no manga counterpart to base it off. The movie retellings had two purposes, 1) getting rid of Fox's shares for the movies on the same content 2) buying time to get the story developments going.

Now the problem with that, is the fact that Toei is extremely limited, production wise. They launched that new show while literally all of their staff were busy on other shows and tried to make it work, thus the awful schedule. For instance, they had a One Piece TV special scheduled while all staffs were taken, that actually needed to borrow staff FROM DBS. That resulted in the death of art known as "Goku vs Frieza" in the FnF arc.

Why it looks like DBS has a bright future :

- Toriyama isn't getting bored and the work load required is very minimal (a few designs here and there, and he has support from his editors to come up with new stories)

- Several Toei shows ended and their production value was put on DBS

- DBZ licence is stronger than it's ever been in the past 6 years

- DBS is consistently in the top 10 of anime since its launch

It should be good from now on.
