Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

The performance delta between the Neo and XB2 is not as great as the raw numbers lead the average consumer to believe. There are things about both system architectures not fully understood, that bring the two systems into balance.

People DO understand that Sony has some of the smartest hardware guys IN THE WORLD. They CREATED GDDR5, the standard RAM that everyone uses these days. So while people laude MS for their HW, do you really think Sony don’t know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way they're giving up a 30%+ advantage to Microsoft. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference – it would be obvious.

I get a ton of hate for saying this – but it’s been the same EVERY generation. MS claims more power, they did it with Xenos, they did it with ESRAM, and they are doing it again. And, in the end, games on Sony's system looked the same or better.

I’m not saying they haven’t built a good system – I’m merely saying that anyone who wants to die on their sword over this 30%+ power advantage are going to be fighting an uphill battle over the next 10 years…

Both "Neo" and "Scorpio" are expected to be released in 2017 (late?). That would make it almost 4 years since the original versions. Price for their components will probably be even lower by then so $399 - $449 would sound about right. And it's not like the old consoles will be obsolete or something. Until the next versions are out 6-8 years from now (PS5, XB10000), the original consoles will still be fine.

NEO is expected to launch later this year going by insider chatter.

While I understand MS's position with regards to not wanting to be the under powered system again, with this target spec of 6 teraflops, they could very well price themselves out of competition, which was probably the largest factor as to why they were getting beat early this gen. Unless they try some sort of Xbox Live subsidy model or sell at a loss.

That's a generational gap between XB1 and Scorpio. Are developers even going to support the XB1 for much longer?

6X range in graphical options scalability is nothing unusual in PC space where a low end card like the GTX750 Ti can run the same game a 980Ti can. (something like low/medium 30fps vs ultra 60fps and higher res)

I hate the idea of 6 times.

Sure the gulf in terms of multiply might be the same.

You got 1 dollar. I got 6.

You got 1 million I got 6 million while the same multiple is effectively a fucking mammoth gap

So in DBZ terms...
Wii U=Yamcha
XB1= Non SSJ Goku
PS4= SSJ Goku
PS4 Neo= SSJ2 Gohan
Xbox Scorpio= SSJ3 Goku

Did i do this right?

With a die shrink, a $200 base ps4 is easily doable depending on what they have to pay in terms of royalties.

Doable, but I don't see it happening. At its current price the console is already selling like hot cakes. Lowering it by 100$ is something I can see happening, by 200$? I will happily eat crow if so.

The majority are much more likely to just upgrade their PS4 to a 4K, than they are to wait almost a year longer for a new Xbox.

Scorpio may launch with no one but a subset of Xbox owners caring, like another Wii U.

I'm going to ride my PS4 into the dirt until PS5 or whatever they name it. Pick up an NX and continue to spend most of my gaming time on PC. I don't have to buy an Xbox and MS gets software money from me if they put out games that I like. It's a win/win. I get games, MS gets money, Sony keeps me in their ecosystem and Nintendo is my secret true love forever and ever. Works for me!

I'd rather they cut it loose. I haven't got much value out of my xbox. As long as the games are forward compatible I'll be happy.

Muhahaha, well done. Those were the fucking days.

Whoa...wasn't expecting that! Sony must be there with Neo now.

Shots fired!

Don't see how it's shots fired or why it would force Sony to announce something before they are ready to.

I still think MS announcing this early tanks sales even more and hands more mindshare to Sony. But hey they have nothing to really lose.

I would disagree. I think that if you have an Xbox One or a PS4, getting the other upgraded console is a much better value proposition. You'll still be able to play the exclusives from your current system but you'll also be able to have those sweet third party graphics.

If they reveal the thing one year before release... I can't imagine how big the gap between PS4-XBO would be on Scorpio release...

Wait Phil basically acknowledged that this is legit? Holy shit what a wild ride this is.

If MS really shows up with Scorpio I feel like Sony has to be there with Neo as well

This e3 is going to be full of hype, tears, salt, and all sorts of emotions.

Forget Year of Dreams 2.0

Apocalypse is coming GAF.

Haha this brings back memories.

ONE MILLION UNITS

200$ for a mainstream console. Yeah, no. When your average Samsung and Apple device cost 600-800$ from the start, I do not see the current PS4 going for anything less than 300 and the upgraded version for 600-700$, especially if we have to believe these "power specs"

The 3-4x rumored power increase is absolutely insane. I don't believe people quite realize what the difference is. That's like letting a Volvo race a Ferrari.

PS4 will be less than $300 this year come black friday and xmas you can bet on that .
Also no way NEO going to cost that much since they will price there self out the market .

Eh...unfortunately for MS, power isn't the reason people largely bought the PS4 over the XB1.

Is it time yet?

Too soon?

PS - can someone superimpose Phil Spencer's face over Stallone's here?

I can't wait for Next-Gen console war GIFS! #E3

Not quite sure I believe it'll be that powerful if I'm being honest. Was planning on swapping my X1 and PS4 for their upgrades eventually but this seems a bit far for MS to bother going.

Unless they try some sort of Xbox Live subsidy model or sell at a loss.

Or maybe they plan to have a budget model (e.g. less than $500) and a premium model (e.g. less than $1000)? Like there is a Surface and a Surface Pro, Windows 10 and Windows 10 Pro, Lumia 950 and 950XL, etc.

I can't think of any other product in their lineup that has only one version.

is unlikely to be released until late 2017 according to Polygon's sources. It will likely be announced in the next month
... Do they really want to kill the sales of the vanilla Xbox One this much?

What a very wrong decision :\

Why would they announce it next month if releasing next year. Makes no sense.

This legit feels like a calculated leak to put a damper on Sony's NEO imminent announcement.

There's no other logical reason to announce a console ~16 months ahead of launch.

Or maybe they plan to have a budget model (e.g. less than $500) and a premium model (e.g. less than $1000)? Kind of like there is a Surface and a Surface Pro, with various options for specs.

Those are the prices you are going with? Goodbye Xbox for awhile.

So if true...and we get the announcements for both the slim and Scorpio this summer (assuming Scorpio will get announced at Gamescom) how do consumers react? And if Sony also announces their PS Neo at some point this summer are both console makers going to be forced to drop price on the "current" gen models to get units moving?

Also do we have any details on the new controller? I haven't seen anything on that specifically yet.

They can afford to take a loss where as Sony can't so I could see them trying to muscle their way in like that.
But if we do end up going to new consoles every other year subsidy would make sense.

So I guess we'll be getting graphics options on new console games then?

Even if there is a huge power gap, I'll likely stick with Sony, don't want to lose all my PS+ games by switching over completely, and not going to sub to both online services along with my preference of Sony exclusive IPs.

You know what... I'm done. I'm out.

Thanks for the last 30 years, consoles, I'll always cherish the memories. Peace.

And now to buy a GTX 1080.
