Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

This is lunacy, not the rumor itself, but this stupid race to nowhere that will confuse the fuck out of everyone who is not a nerd, and no doubt will end up alienating a big part of the console userbase.

I seriously don't understand this.

So since this is info regarding Microsoft via Polygon does that mean "controlled" leak? I hope the console cycle as it were does increase in pace, but man, Dev times for big titles are still 3+ years, we are going to get one system seller per system at this rate....

I know Microsoft and Sony are obviously competing but it really feels like all three console manufacturers have decided to just run off and do their own thing.

Nintendo will do whatever Nintendo does, Microsoft is merging console gaming with PC gaming and Sony is building a dedicated console space with multiple but not crazy different hardware options.

Each one seems to have their own focus and identity at this point. For us as gamers and consumers, it's basically just pick an ecosystem and roll with it.

You haven't gotten much value out of it, and now you want to buy another one?

That's backwards to me. I haven't gotten a lot of value out of my PS4 yet, so I am super pissed at a new system coming out.

The entire xbox ui is sluggish and was created to support a product I don't have and have no interest in getting (kinect.) I like gears and Halo but Halo was underwhelming. Not necessarily because of the lack of power, the framerate and graphics were great, but the multiplayer levels were lame. They didn't really have any large big team battle maps that weren't forge maps if I recall correctly. This is absolutely absurd. I can only imagine it was because there were some type of power issues. There's no other reason to leave this stuff out. The xbox one is a bad system in my eyes and I just want to sell mine and get something that's actually good. I don't hate xbox, I just don't like the one. It's also loud in low power mode.

From Arthur

He tweeted it. Also said he heard from 1 source and that is why he didn't put it in the article.

SO all Jason said was that he also heard 5-6tf from a single source. If its a single source it could just be the same source for both publications so it wouldnt exactly be a second confirmation. Until Jason or some other publication says they can confirm that info with multiple sources it seems pretty weak to me. And no I don't trust Arthur Gies' word on having multiple sources at all. Polygon's credibility is absolutely nil after the all the shit he was slinging about secret sauce and dGPUs before and just after the XB1 launched. The dude has earned the utmost skepticism when it comes to anything technical.

you don't think a company like MS intentionally leaks things to get a feel for what the reception would be before actually announcing something?
It's clear Phil already did this in March. Why intentionally leak specific hardware details weeks before you announce them.

Hell, I did not buy my Xbox One until July 2014. So if this releases late 2017, then I might start thinking about it towards the end of 2018 or so. That might work, but still seems a little too early to bail and buy a new system.

Sounds like Sony out in front again and Microsoft having to accelerate their plans to play catch up in the marketing/fanbase department. Hey MS/Xbox don't release a half baked console/platform this time and focus on games, pure and simple. Also you want to be the leader this time around? Loss lead like the old days. We spend plenty in the first 12-24 months of owning a console; from movies and games to music and peripherals.

You know the more I think about the idea of a 6TF console the more unlikely it seems. Unless MS is planning to heavily subsidize the console (which seems unlikely given their initial price target for XB1) the manufacturing cost would lead to a retail price that would cause quite the sticker shock. There's also the matter of bottlenecks which seems unavoidable with such a massive GPU.
Couple that with cost along with the massive heat and power profile such a GPU would require and it really just does not add up.
.

I assume this is MS thinking they can achieve it with the power of the cloud or something?

No way it will be 6 Tflops

Guys, the 290x/390x GPU is around 6tflops, this spec GPU is from 2014 running at around 250w.

NVidia already have 970/290/290x performance at 150W since 2014.

Please understand NVidia is releasing a GPU this summer with 980ti/Fury X performance at 150W. They've got knocked off a 100w. A 970/290x power perf in 2017 will running at around a 100-125W.

This is what happens all the time guys and AMD is suppose to be up there with NVidia on power to performance with the new stuff.

PS4 is around 130w total. 360/PS3 launched at around 170w total.

A 390/390x spec GPU running around 100-150W and a CPU using 25-50W is easily doable.

And for those who can't get shelf prices out of their mind. by 2017 970/290/390x type perf will be around $250 and MS won't be buying it at that price anyway.

People don't get confused by the various phone and tablet upgrades always coming out.

rofl, this iterative console stuff is going to be a nightmare if I'm going to have to switch consoles every three years in order to get the best multi-plats

Ah, what an enlightening post. With Phil's twitter adding fuel to the fire, it's pretty clear they're keen to get Scorpio rumours doing the rounds.

And when you need a MS story spun by the gaming press the obvious choice is the guy who has been carrying water for them for a decade.

How would it be in their best interest? They announce their console now and they crater sales of the Xbox 1 until next fall.

Meanwhile Sony gains marketshare and profit when the unified model of PS4 and Neo. While MS banks on people all of sudden switching to their box while Sony firmly has people planted in their ecosystem by the time this releases.

I'll admit MS really has nothing to lose. The PS4 is going to continue to sell well regardless. It just announcing right now tanks their current sales and PS4 is in an even more dominant position next fall.

Well, you are talking about MS marketing team. I do agree it will be a major mistake to announce a system that far out. If that does happen, I can see Sony's 20m estimate easily surpass this holiday.

This feels very much like a controlled leak in my view - MS trying to hoover up some of the Neo hype. It'll be interesting to see if there are any hard numbers at E3.

lol controlled leak

The reason you see stories tumble at the same time is because sources feel more comfortable when information is out in the open--harder for them to get caught. If one outlet has run with a story, your sources can go "OK, it's not just me talking."

Power is great and all, but they need to hit the right price. I'll buy it no matter the price cause Halo, but it can't be more expensive than the PS4k if MS wants to be the top dog.

Really don't know how I feel about that.

Oh, we could even end up being 2-year cycles, depending on the circumstances.
If power really does matter and Xbox2 manages to regain some ground, we may see PS5 in 2018. So will have a new console every year, great isn't it?

Scorpio sounds more like a new gen for MS consoles and less of an upgrade like PS4k.
If a new gen will begin every 2-3 years i aint with it.

Well I was going to wait for the "Slim" revision before buying an Xbox One but I guess I'll be waiting for this rumoured new machine instead. If the specs are accurate then it's probably not going to be cheap.

Why buy one console per generation when you can buy two?

And why wait until a generation is over? Buy a new console every two to three years.

Don't worry though, new games will technically play on your legacy hardware, just not as well as advertised, and for who knows how long at that.

You don't have to switch and the best multi-plats were already on PC, but most people ignored that fact without any issue, this won't be different.

That is what it looks like to me as well, despite backwards/forwards compatibility. It's just way too soon to be announcing a new system that is a full leap over the Xbox One.

what the fuck is a teraflop

People don't get confused by the various phone and tablet upgrades always coming out.

Those devices are made with planned obsolesce in mind and it's way more likely for someone to break their phone/tablet than a gaming console. Also cell phone carriers either subsidize those costs or have payment plans in place for new phones and tablets.

This is kickass news for PC gamers. It sounds like MS's vision is for Xbox to be a gaming platform rather than just a console. The Xbox console will just be one way to play Xbox games, sort of like a Steam box.

Yay, thousands of dollars on hardware, plus the cost of the games that I barely even have time to enjoy on each system before new systems are announced!

This is really interesting. I have some concerns though. Namely the price point and whether multiplat titles will be significantly dragged down by the weakest system.

Developers will also be less afraid if pushing hardware knowing more powerful machines are always around the corner.

I guess you're right....if Sony is launching this year they can't react. Xbox coming after them will let them easily tweak the box to a higher spec if necessary. Good show Microsoft!

I think if given the choice, Sony would rather have a year head start over the more powerful box. Be interesting to see how they react though, will they speed up PS5's development or just let the gen run it's course for another 3-5 years.

Man....I was 360 all last gen and Xbox was my joint but after being wildly let down by the Xbone I switched to PS4 and haven't looked back. Certainly miss some things about the platform (although so far I prefer the PS exclusives) but not enough to go back.

Was and am still planning on getting the PSVR but this Oculus rumor is getting me hyped. I can't really afford to build a good gaming PC at the moment so if something comes along that offers me a more affordable and better VR experience than PS at a better price point than PC I'm jumping in big time.

Four times more powerful is exactly what I would expect a console released four years later to be. I expect it to launch at $400 too, unless they bundle it with something like they did at the Xbox One launch.

I am pleased that consoles are adopting a PC-like approach of more or less continuous upgrades with full software compatibility across 'generations'. Of course, further in the future (like 2021-23) new titles probably won't be supported on the original PS4 and Xbox One anymore, but I would very much like it if backward compatibility is maintained going forward forever now.

I think this is a good situation for everyone -- console makers, players, and developers alike.

Ditto. At this point I don't even care. I MAY... MAY HUGE MAYBE will upgrade down the line to a NEO and that's at least some time after launch. This pissing contest is why I stuck with consoles. Fuck this. Great for some people but not up my alley. Just reminds me of my PC gaming days of new upgrades every 6-8 months.
