Trump v. Bernie Debate

I honestly think the problem is he's principled to a fault. He's willing to throw the people his principles are theorectically built around under the bus in order to stand up for those principles.

This is far too important an election to allow yourself to completely lose perspective in the passion of the chase, and apparently there isn't a single person on his team that either isn't a yes-man or is capable of talking sense into him right now.

that's a good point......such an uncompromising attitude can be a good or bad thing, depending on the issue. I didn't really like how Obama compromised too much with Republicans...but considering the state of Congress and such, it seemed that Obama really played it pretty well.

Just like the DNC is under no obligation to not find an interesting young politician (who's actually a member of their party) to groom and support as he/she runs to knock out a certain incumbent senator from Vermont when he's up for re-election in a few years. The game is the game.

Good luck unseating the most popular senator in the country. They tried that once before and just ended up with egg on their face.

Holy shit this thread. Anybody who doesnt see things the way I see it is a terrible human being and the candidate they support is a terrible evil human being. :D

PoliGaf is a thousand times more bitter and worse than ConsoleGaf. Not complaining though. Way more entertaining too.

Anyway, I kinda want this debate to go total WWE and end with a swerve of Trump and Bernie shaking hands and Trump announcing Bernie as his Veep.

Trump would "win" in a debate with Bernie and it wouldn't be close.

like most debates if you're a trump supporter you'd probably think trump won, and if you're not you probably wouldn't

think about it, when has trump ever said anything of substance at a debate? now think about the hill/bern debates

Well, at least in that case people are getting passionate about something that actually matters.

at least this shows Bernie as a willing participant while Trump shows himself as a coward. Ya see, this is why I'm confused about why there are people supporting both.

Bernie has some principles despite the recent fuckery. He ain't no racist, that's for sure.

That's now how people are going to look at it at all.

Bernie got played, Trump is the nominee and Bernie actually thought the nominee would spend time with him, the not nominee.

The optics on this would be bad. It's not going to happen, but if it did, the line Bernie would have to walk in order not to damage his own cause would be a thin one. I'd rather we didn't go here. At the same time, I understand some of the rancor. Whether the slights are real or imagined, Sanders turned from a one-issue candidate into a formidable opponent... "anybody but Hillary" isn't imaginary. Millions of independent voters despise this woman. Which has emboldened Sanders to turn this primary into a bit of a circus.

Why are Hillary supporters upset. It's weird but it's gonna grab some media attention and I can assure you Bernie is going to rip Trump to shreds and make him a lot weaker for the primaries and Trump won't be able to hide Clinton foundation or hell even attacking Bill Clinton to deflect anything thrown at him and not engage in any actual politics.

This can only be a good thing for the general election.

You kind of look like an asshole when you say that you'll do something for charity and then pull the "Just kidding!" card. But if anyone can do that unscathed, it's Trump.

Trump says he was kidding? Well golly gee willickers, who could have seen that coming?

He was just blowing off his usual Bernie sympathizing rhetoric. "Bernie is being treated so unfairly! Hillary won't debate him? I would...."
Then when it might actually become reality he meekly switches.

lol what? Bernie somehow looks bad for Trump saying he would debate him, saying 'yeah bro bring it on?' and Trump backing out for a second time? That doesn't even make any sense.

Probably. Just my personal interpretation. Still if Trump were to try to pull this off in the GE it'd be a bad look. Perhaps a sign of things to come. He looks weak here for chickening out I feel.

I've only read the first couple pages of this thread, but what the actual fuck at some of these delusional posts. A lot of the Hillary fans are into the "look at that bitch eating crackers" mode regarding Bernie. If you think Bernie is going to be buddy buddy in a debate with Donald Trump, you're crazy.

Bernie has been itching to smack down Trump in a debate the entire election. He's brought up the idea of mixed party debates in the primary early on. He's talked shit about Trump more than he has anybody. Someone mind explaining to me the "logic" of how a Bernie v Trump debate is secretly a sabotage of the DNC and Hillary that will lead to a Trump presidency? I honestly don't see this affecting Hillary much at all. If anything I would think this would help dissuade the handful of Bernie fans saying Trump is their second choice, and help unify the party against Trump.

I agree with those in the thread that think Trump would treat Bernie very kindly in an effort to sway his voters to him. Trump knows he won't be going against Bernie, there's no reason for him to attack him.

Why are Hillary supporters upset.

They have been nervous and upset for a very long time. Their candidate is historically-unpopular, not personable, and ridden with scandals. I think they should just be patient a few more weeks, wait for the convention, and the inevitable endorsement from Bernie Sanders, but they seem incapable of that, so you get name-calling and hyperbole. Sanders worse than Cruz or Rubio? LOL. Someone actually posted that.

I don't think he's gonna go hard on Sanders at all. He's going to play nice and lob softballs all night to try and convince Sanders supporters to vote for him.

The jokes on him of course, Sanders supporters barely even turn out to vote for Sanders.

43% of the votes in the primary is not "barely" turning out, with 21 states won. More so for someone who they said wouldn't even get double digits.

Years of Democrats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory have made people nervous and irrational.

I wanted Hillary and two comedians (I'm thinking Senator Franken & TV's Frank Conniff) to do a live MST3k treatment of the festivities.

But, alas, it wasn't meant to be.

(But hey, thanks for knocking that email story away from the topline, Trump & Bernie. Great job!)

Bernie is being used as a tool by Trump, and his ego is too big for him to see it. Charity or not, it's very obvious what's going on here.

EDIT: He was kidding? This doesn't looks so good for Bernie then lol.

Politics in general tends to bring out the worst in people.

It does seem a little hypocritical when Trump and Bernie supporters are seen as unruly, but you see it from Hillary's side too. There's assholes in all camps.

If Bernie really thought this was a good idea he is clearly too far gone...

He has been smelling his own farts for so long that not enough oxygen has gone to his brain.

Imagine if Hillary did this shit if Bernie was the presumptive nominee.

I am honestly starting to hate this egotistical old man.

"Doesn't look good for Bernie"? How delusional are you?

Bernie will spin this as Trump being too cowardly to debate him. Win/Win.

Hillary could have also ridden this train but she decided to turn her back on further debates with Bernie, so she'd come off looking like a hypocrite.

Again, how does this look bad for Bernie, who literally only responded to Trump offering a debate with "yeah okay."

This would have been great for both Bernie and Trump. Bernie gets media attention he doesn't have the money to buy anymore, he gets to attack somebody that is, politically, like his mortal enemy, and he comes out being given legitimacy.

That Trump thought this was a good idea before his handlers stepped is baffling.

Trump will be extremely accommodating to Bernie, no question about it. This will be turned by Trump into anti-establiahment vs establishment narrative

Seriously, this was win-win for both Trump and Bernie.

I wish someone would actually explain how this would be bad for either campaigns. Hell, I don't think it'd even look that bad for Hillary.

They tried that before, and it didnt work. He wont lose that seat till he gives it up willingly.

That's a good point. Demographics favor us but we've fucked things up badly in the past as well. 2004 was a slap in the face. 2000 was heartbreaking.

Typically, they only have themselves to blame. 2010 showed the same. Even 2008 to 2012 had a worrying trend. While Obama still crushed Mitt. He went up a million votes from McCain. Obama went down 4 million. Even though Dems drastically outnumber the Rebs. The Rebs are going to come out and vote in number every time.

This is what Clinton needs to be doing right now. Honestly, we caught a break with Trump running. So much Vile is coming from that man, that many people aren't going to vote for Clinton as much as they are going to vote against Trump. Clinton is a weak candidate whose done very little to get that youth vote. Sadly, Sanders still does have enough sway with his populance where he can cripple Clinton's chances. So she also has to play ball with him.

Virtually everything that's about Sanders and not Hillary would be received as being bad for Hillary by their camp.

EDIT: The debate would be great for Sanders. More media coverage with the added benefit of fueling his narrative that he'd be a better general election candidate against Trump. The whole thing would be a prolonged "Hey superdelegates ;), like what u c?"

Can you explain to me why she's 'weak'? I've long been a Sanders fan for his ideas, but I always hear this argument of weakness.

I often preferred Sanders because his answers felt like a better social blanketing of things than our current situation, which I could only call dreadful. Is she weak because she's interested in patchwork in a climate where anything else promises dissolution?
