Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

That was my worry as well, posted previously about it. Based on rumors, we know the PS4 Neo is still using the same Jaguar CPU. And we have seen games already being CPU limited this generation. Boosting it by 500Mhz isn't going to do a whole lot. Because of the CPU, the PS4 Neo may not be able to take full advantage of the GPU upgrade in many games.

This is why I think the Xbox One Scorpio next year may have a better CPU (hopefully using AMD's Zen architecture).

Im betting we will see something closer to the GTX 1060M and not the desktop 1070.. the 6tflop and 4tflop numbers being "lab tested"

"At Microsoft we don't comment on rumours or speculation. Hey Nancy, print me up a creative chatter shirt! Nothing in the handbook that I can't do that!"

They all seem so happy. So different than the shitstorm at XBOX One reveal.

This is something that I've noticed too these past few weeks.

Excellent. 3998 posts too late, but still, excellent!

The more I think about this (3 year cycle), I think it would be ok. If they always support one box back, that'll still get each console a reasonable 6 year life. Or if you want to be on the high end, three years. Like an extended tick-tock or S-non-S cycle.
I feel the same way. Three years is the goldilocks amount of time in my view. It allows them to bring out cheaper hardware early on (avoiding loss leading) which leads to a broader install base. Then offering enthusiasts a spec bump three years down the track keeps things fresh (and moving forward.)

Yeah, as long as I'm guaranteed to get every game for 6 years at a reasonable performance, I'll be fine with this model.

I think if they explain this tick-tock model well at E3 they can announce they are making Scorpio right now and Xbox One Slim's sales won't tank too hard. They just have to clearly outline that the Xbox One Slim is still a viable console and will be priced appropriately as an entry to the market. Show Gears 4 and Battlefield 1 graphics on it and say look how amazing games can still look on it, and slap a $249 base model price with $299 for bundles, I think the majority of people will still get this (and PS4) and only enthusiasts will choose to go with Scorpio and Neo.

It's interesting you mentioned BF1. I wonder how graphics on the Scorpio will compare to what we saw at the reveal.

Probably mostly the same except for 1080p and some extra anti aliasing and HBAO. I don't see games within a year or two showing generational differences.

Cant wait for e3... Either gonna be so epic with scorpio huge let down wihout

I am going with the mindset that Scorpio will not be shown or talked about at all. I don't like over-hyping myself with these conferences, so I usually go in with the mind set that it will just be a "ok" conference for both Sony and MS. I think the thing going against them talking about the Scorpio is the messaging where in the same conference you will have the Slim being shown and probably a markdown on the existing Xbox One to clear inventory for the Slim. Announcing and talking about Scorpio personally might be over complicating things.

lmao. You say you don't see a generational difference within a year or two, but in your response you go on to say 1080p, extra AA and HBAO, which the current Xbox One can only manage 720p, with poor or no AA and no HBAO in BF4. If it is 1080p, good AA and HBAO that would be a generational difference compared to what we have right now.

Except those are things that can be applied easily...
Increase resolution, increases AA count, use better AO.

Since scorpio would most likely be a W10 machine and games running in w10 mode, i think there is a market for a less powerful version of scorpio.

Specifically a version that competes directly with the baseline PS4. i.e 2 teraflops. Runs W10 games at 1080p, while XB runs at 720p/900p, and scorpio runs at 4k / VR mode.

True, but increasing resolution, AA solution, AO etc. are considered generational improvements. If the Scorpio does have 6tf and a good CPU, I can easily see them doing 4k/30fps solid or going with more eye candy in maxing out 1080p/60fps with really good IQ etc.

Could they release a Xbox One S this year that is a tad more powerful? That would fly in the face of what Spencer said in terms of not liking the idea of a Xbox 1.5.

Haha

not mine

I'm now hoping there is some kind of Simpsons reference at MS's conference.

How will MS make games compatible with XB1 without ED RAM?

They don't need esram, they just need a memory that's as fast or faster. There's nothing esoteric about esram in practical terms, it's just a memory pool that the gpu can use normally but it just so happens to be way faster than the bigger pool.

I will change my avatar to Phil Spencer until next E3 if they show Scoprpio, VR Oculus compatibility and
Banjo 3

In all seriousness, I want to believe this is real but you'd think MS would have their own event for this.

Do you trust Microsoft to be clear about about this? I do not. Mix messsaging and vague staments have been a staple of Microsoft this generation. I just want them to be clear and straightforward with the plan.

Yep that needs to be the strategy

Not really, but it's happening regardless. So all we can do is hope they get the point across correctly this time.

Mix messages and vague statements are not something Microsoft has monopolized. Remember when you couldn't even run multitask on the PS4 even though it was advertised at the reveal? Or how long we had to wait for some sort of pricing model on NOW.

It's a big corporation thing.

Huh? I don't even know how to respond to this ha.

you could do that at launch unless I'm misunderstanding you

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong then. I thought background game running closed when opening apps. There was some feature the PS4 didn't launch with that had been announced at reveal that had 50 GAF threads discussing it.

Regardless that's not the point.

I think you meant suspend/resume. And that wasn't poorly communicated as much as the feature just wasn't ready for launch (and for quite awhile after).

Yeah there we go. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-suspend-resume-feature-not-cancelled-says-sony/1100-6423215/

But still getting off track with the specific point. Mixed messaging and vague statements are not Microsoft exclusives.

It went months with no response from Sony about where the feature was. Hence the above Gamespot article about Sony saying it hasn't been cancelled. Saying a product will have something and then the product mysteriously not having it with no explanation = mixed messaging.

Still, it wasn't on the same level as Microsoft's bungled DRM announcement where everyone was left scratching their heads and guessing what they meant.

If people weren't confused from Xbox 360 core, and premium...they aren't going to be confused about Xbox One, and Xbox One + or whatever they name it. It really is that simple.

They were confused with the Wii and Wii U though. Marketing is to blame though. Hopefully MS markets this one properly.

Yeah. but it's not even remotely the same as MS executives giving mixed messages over their entire platforms policies, come on.

Eh, Oculus support... I mean I can't predict the future, but working at a place which has heavily invested in VR, support for the Oculus isn't really something to trumpet about.

I still think that the Xbox Scorpio won't be talked about at E3...it will be something they talk about gamescom as it seems to me that gamescom is where they talk about a little about the holiday lineup and more into what they are doing in the next year. That makes more sense to me. In August, not too long away from when Sony is readying the launch of Neo.
