Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

I know next to nothing about production times, concept to retail etc etc, but here's my question - what if "Scorpio" is the Slim.

What if the big surprise is the Xbox One Slim is the new chipset with all the power and it's out this November? Surely that'd be the megaton to beat all megatons....right?

I can dream I suppose.

Nice.

Anything more than just take his word for it?

He basically corroborated everything that's been said: there's going to be a slim Xbox One model at E3 & that as of now, Scorpio is slated for 2017, with a partnership with Oculus to have VR come to the console. When Microsoft caught wind of the Neo rumors, they tried to crunch to get Scorpio out this year, but it most likely won't happen.

EDIT: I should add that he said he's unsure if they'll announce Scorpio at E3 seeing as it wouldn't make sense to announce both the slim model & that at the same time. But again, Sony might force their hand to do so.

The only way that would happen is if Microsoft takes a huge loss on the console.

Hmm....they've done it before....

Will they do it again? Can you imagine the reaction? The probable goodwill they'd garner from the core? I'd do it if I were in charge.

(Probably why I'm not in charge of a multi-billion dollar corporation)

I don't think it would make sense to do it nowadays. There will be a Slim that comes out this year and new Xbox next year.

i see that being possible. sony was given the option to spend more to maintain the chips for a slim ps4 or spend less and double the power.

Im sure MS was given that same option and i cant see why they would spend more for less. It would make more sense to take that upgrade option but push it beyond 2x performance and not settle for a .5 upgrade

Console gaming is getting weird.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. Also, just wild speculation but I suspect developers having to work around 4 sku for two ecosystems is not going to help the NXs chances of gaining more third party support.

Bolded is bunch of crock. :p

You can never ever rush software or hardware to come out earlier than planned.

What is podcast DLC?

Could this be what MS is targeting?

Damn.

GPU will be over a year old by Scorpio releases.

Going by history, Sony and MS have always used cutting edge GPU architectures. I would place money the Scorpio gpu will be more related to Vega, architecture wise, than Polaris.

You can rush software, hardware, not so much. Either way, what was being "rushed" was the announcement of the Xbox Scorpio to an earlier time.

A huge megaton if true

Man I really hope they at least announce it at E3.

I was on the edge about going this year and Scorpio + whatever announcement 343 teased the other day (Something other than Halo Wars 2) was what finally sold me on attending again this year.

I have never heard of a software release date being moved up ever in my "limited" years working in the industry. :p

Any word about the CPU? Isn't the CPU already part of the problem and won't just increasing the GPU just ensure that the old shitty CPU is the bottleneck more so than it is now?

Completely possible given the Surface team is making all hardware now. Look what those motherfuckers squeezed into a tablet.

Yeah that was something I was thinking about. If people are more enthused for the beefier consoles, it may be that the consensus for NX is a similar situation to the WiiU and developers are less inclined to engage with it if the specs are not competitive enough to develop for. Really depends on how people take to these new consoles vs the current ones, and what NX specs actually are.

At least regarding Sony and PS4/Neo...both machines can run same code no extra optimization required (unless devs decided to add more for Neo)

The same will apply to Xbox.

The Scorpio is rumored to support VR, which the Xbox one can't currently do. I can see at least the VR games not working on the xbox one. Given the power difference, I can see some Scorpio games not running on the xbox one.

You said you could never rush software, yes you can. The product that you get will reflect that. In my years of working in software development/testing I have seen some projects get moved up since things get prioritized differently.

It's basically what Phil was saying outright though. About how the software is detached from the hardware due to UWP, allowing for both backwards and forwards compatibility.

The game os also runs goes through the hypervisor if im not mistaken to get
its share of the hardware.

For VR-specific games that would make sense... but for anything else you're arguing that they then don't run on the PS4 (and by that effect the Neo) as well. Doesn't seem likely.

518 teraflop super computer vs a 500 teraflop super computer. 10 ps4 worth of computational power difference. How will the weaker super computer ever compete.
Dude that's way ahead on the curve of diminishing returns.
If you want to compare it like that, 2 PS4s versus 3 PS4s duct taped together.

Microsoft exclusives just don't do it for me anymore. Halo 5 disappointed me and the MCC launch was a disaster. Gears of War has always been just ok to me. Forza is good but I like GT more. Now that future games will be on PC plus combining that with a new console, I think I'm just going to stay PC + PS + Nintendo and just leave Microsoft Xbox consoles behind.

Microsoft is just making it easy for me to abandon them on the console front. I'm not happy about the PS4K NEO either but I might get it if the Final Fantasy VII Remake gets bundled with it.

I'm not a fan of iterative consoles and I don't think they will succeed in the market long term but if the idea is to not make exclusive games for 1.5 consoles then I can live with it. Once they go exclusive games for half-gen consoles, I might bow out entirely.

Phil says a lot of things, not saying it's not the case but I take anything execs say with a grain of salt.

So Scorpio will launch later than Neo? and will be only 30% stronger? Also what about Ram solution on it? Wouldn't changing esram affect X1 games?

Let's put it this way, the difference between X1 and PS4 is 0.53 TF.

Now, in a world where high end PC GPUs were clocking in at 4 - 6 TF, console gamers were expecting a lot for developers to do with just a 0.53 TF difference... so the real situation is, if you're expect developers to do plenty with 0.53 TF, what can you expect them to do with a whopping 2TF? I would say that number is of much greater significance than a percentage would have you believe.

That would be awesome, but wasn't it said that the slim would come out in August or something? And also, MS better take care of heat protection if they have that much more powerful Xbox and is actually a smaller console. We don't want a RROD situation again.

Not long now and we'll finally find out if the Kotaku leaks are legit. Unless they save it for a later date.

And wasn't it also said that MS had not decided on the exact specs yet? No way it's coming this year.

Oh c'mon... what he said was unprompted, alluded to new hardware outside of the traditional cycle, and matches up perfectly with the work they've been doing to unify their experience across different devices (that have different architectures... this was all before the PS4K/Neo info even broke... there's healthy skepticism, and there's just being a bit ridiculous about it all.

If only you were a slug

lol

Yea, we have two more weeks. I'm still more interested in the UWP side of the house and OS features than the hardware. I think there's more to talk about with what is Xbox consoles are possible to do with Windows 10 being the OS and looking at the features of the desktop, mobile, and even Hololens (that has a new update today). I would make a thread on it if there's interest.

There is nothing ridiculous about it....things change and execs say shit all the time that doesn't pan out.

Sure, but that'd extrapolate out to anything, to the point where we should then write off anything that's not in out hands. We know it to the point its worth discussing, where the head of the company that makes the hardware tells us this is what it'll do before even telling us what or when the new hardware will be. Rumors of a new architecture should hardly cast a shadow over claims made by the head of Xbox, that specifically address changes in architecture, before the discussion even began.
