Glad to see Smash 4 be such a healthy game. It's really cool that it can exsist alongside and even outshine Melee which is such a beast of a game.

Meele players tell this tale to themselves in the darkest nights while camping .... but they never imagined that their worst nightmares could become true

It can't be stated enough how good it is that smash 4 has grown in it's second year. Year first, sure there's goign to be a lot of people. But year two is always kind of the test to see if it's a game that'll last or just peters out.

I'm kinda waiting on Nintendo to put money behind it like they did Splatoon. That'd kill off Melee really quick.

Nothing would kill off melee. We played this game for double digit pots at monthlies for YEARS.

happy smash 4 is doing so well, though!

Congratulations! Currently my favorite fighting game.

I'll action try to put some effort into really learning about it but there's just so much other stuff I need to do.

People go where the money is.

And yeah, EVO needs to put Smash 4 on Sunday and Melee on Saturday already.
They won't. Smash 4 doesn't bring as many viewers as Melee, & Melee has more hype stories behind its scene. All Smash 4 has as far as storylines is ZeRo's one-man reign of terror. As stated before, there's a reason why Dreamhack Montreal chose Melee over Smash 4, & why eSports teams are looking for Melee players more than Smash 4 players.

You're naive to believe that something as simple as Nintendo putting money behind Smash 4 will kill Melee. It'll only help Smash 4 sustain itself, not kill off Melee. Melee has taken on a life of its own at this point. And judging by Nintendo publicly supporting both it & Smash 4 at CEO, Nintendo has come to terms with this. The only thing that will kill Melee is if future updates move Smash 4 more towards a faster, offensive-based game (which is half of the reason why Melee is so hype to play & watch). But judging by the recent update, Nintendo may be through with updating the game in general. Granted, there's the rumored NX port, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for any significant changes (though I'd love to be wrong).

Evo 2015 Attendance:

Ultra Street Fighter IV – 2227
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 1926
Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1869
Mortal Kombat X – 1162
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- – 968
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 816
Tekken 7 – 458
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax – 437
Killer Instinct – 397

Smash U likely to pass 2000.

My theory is that many who enter the other games at EVO sign up for Smash 4 because everyone can play it because it's really accessible.

I love this game, but the reason for it being a Saturday game is not number of entrants, it's viewership number and that will probably always be lower than Melee.

This. Smash 4 is the more accessible game, namely because its metagame is so young. But Melee has aged like fine wine. And like any fine wine, everyone wants a sip of it (especially TOs & eSports teams, as mentioned earlier). It's a bit more expensive (I.E. not as easy to get into at this stage), but it's worth it.

When it comes down to it, it'll either be Smash 4 & Melee co-existing or Melee on its own. There's no scenario where Smash 4 ends up being the only Smash game at tournaments. But fortunately, from the looks of this, both games can & will co-exist for the time being.

Smash 4 could have easily eclipse every other game at EVO if the Melee players actually moved on to it. I'm not shitting on Melee or Smash 4 but it's really fusterating seeing the Smash fanbase continue to be segmented like this. Still waiting on that Smash sequel game that gets everybody on the same page.

There's a reason why Melee players stay with Melee. Most of them are willing to move on if Nintendo gave them a Smash game that fit their needs (I.E. faster, offensive). And while Smash 4 took steps in that direction, it's still fundamentally too close to Brawl. Smash 5 would have to adopt more of Melee's playstyle for said Melee players to be enticed to jump on board.

I don't see why people feel the need for Smash 4 to replace Melee. I do agree that next year Smash 4 AND Melee should be Sunday games. Put Smash 4 early in the day and Melee second to last if you want too, but have them both in the big stage.

Last few tournaments have proved that Smash 4 is evolving as an spectator sports, the cast is varied and the storylines are developing, people who claim only Zero has a storyline have clearly not been paying attention. And the gameplay is getting tighter and flashier, combos and advanced techniques are constantly discovered and its just a blast to see.

I know all of this. I'm mostly bummed that Smash 4 wasn't that kind of game though. It's still super solid in its own way and is a hell of a lot better than Brawl though.

Sucks that we have to wait on either Smash 5 and/or someone else taking the helm for the series for this to happen. Hell, maybe the rumoured port of Smash 4 for the NX could be the one.

But nowhere near as flashy as Melee since, as stated earlier, Smash 4 is still too fundamentally close to Brawl. As for the combos, they seem to be nerfing them at every turn (Bayonetta being the latest victim, although she's still a solid character now). Though with patches likely being over, maybe we can truly see the metagame develop.

They won't put 2 games of the same franchise on the final day...unless EVO got a HUGE paycheck out of it to change their minds (just my thinking).

And I thought Melee's Top 8 last year was pretty boring outside of Leffen being upset.

I know how you feel. Even with separate scenes, the Smash games rival that of Street Fighter. Imagine if we were all united under one solid game with long-term support like what Capcom typically does for Street Fighter games.

This. And until Smash 4 gains more viewers than Melee (which is highly unlikely at this point), Melee will remain as a prime-time game while Smash 4 stays as 2nd-string.

I don't know man, I love watching Melee but lately I have feel that it rarely surprises me since the game is so optimized that nowadays the best you can hope for are variations of said strategies and playstyles. I get hype when I see a rarely played character, aMSa's Yoshi or Axe's Pikachu come to mind, but there is so many times I can see Fox's upair.

Smash 4 feels fresh in comparison with the sheer variety of match-ups.

Did you forget that Ally beat ZeRo to win GOML just a few weeks ago?

And Persona 4 Arena could be the biggest fighting game of all time if Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Blazblue, Melee and Smash 4 players all quit their games to play it. Sucks that people play the games they like instead, huh?

Yeah, it was pretty bad at combo breaker with all the furries fluttering about. There was some exceptions but overall they were the majority and made it boring to stick to the Melee stream.

If Smash 4's character variety is maintained the next few years I could see smash 4 slowly overtaking melee. If the meta of Melee becomes super stagnant then it could end up in a Marvel 3 situation where it slowly bleeds players.

Now, it doesn't seem Melee is at that point yet, but lately I've been preferring smash 4 to watch way more then Melee despite Melee definitly having more flashyness to it overall.

As a guy who loves traditional fighting games, I've grown to love the smash games.
That being said, I find Melee far more entertaining. me and my buddies, who all pretty much never played Smash, actually tuned in for Melee at last Evo, was hype as hell.

Find Smash 4 when you compare to Melee, is slow, but much more balanced at least. Either way, I look forward to see more hype moments

smash 4 is not a Sunday game because of redundancy with melee. Smash 4 has consistently more viewership than the games that are scheduled on Sunday.

Also, I firmly doubt that the reason why entrants for the game is high because of people who sign up for other games also sign up for smash 4. Smash 4 prob only share common entrants with melee and Pokken and in the case of Pokken it's more likely that people sign up for smash 4 and then say "why not?" To Pokken.

Look, there currently is no reason to switch from Melee if you like Melee. Melee gets more viewers, more pot bonuses, entrants, and because of this attracts more sponsors. However, it isn't like Smash 4 is completely behind. The entrant numbers are almost similar, as are the viewers (melee obviously more).

If Smash 4 gets money, would that not give those melee players something to think about? If Smash 4 now gets to compete for $150k at a single tournament, I bet players will be migrating over. I bet Smash 4 will get a slight bump in viewers and entrants which further gives incentive to play.

I think it's wrong to automatically assume no change would happen based on history considering the Smash community has had no huge reason to choose on or the other thus far apart from preferring one over the other. You can't just point to history as proof when Nintendo hasn't ever given a large sum of money away from Melee.

It's interesting to think about.

I've gone to a couple smash tournaments in the last year and smash 4 always has the MOST entries but the least people watching the finals. It's super approachable, so more people play it, but everyone goes to watch melee. I expect evo will be similar, with more views during melee finals than smash 4 finals.

Which is part of the reason why Melee was given the main stage instead of Smash 4, & why Melee is generally favored by the FGC over Smash 4.

There is more history behind the players of melee than smash 4. Fans love rivalries and there are a lot in the melee community.

Hahahaha there are people playing melee off garbage can setups right now. Melee players are too savage and don't care about the poverty ass setups they'll have to go through to play

Besides none of them want to learn a new game lol

Smash 4 gets more players on FGC events and Melee gets more in Smash events. Pokken was not out last year when Smash4 got more entrants than Melee at evo, and it wasnt out this year when Melee got almost twice the players than Smash4 at Genesis

I kind of can't believe that you actually believe that.

I'd imagine most Melee players really don't give a shit, and I'm sure lots are excited because they also play 4. Smash 4 ain't Smash Bros. Brawl.
