Mirror's Edge Catalyst EA Access Trial Now Live

Dude. A sequel to Mirror's Edge is coming out and all people are talking about is image quality.

I think its something we should talk about, because part of the reason I personally love Mirrors Edge was that it was super clean and crisp IQ, which went beautifully with the clean art style.

Yes, that's why the game is so beloved and remembered fondly. Its fucking image quality.

Exactly.
Thank you.
I agree it's fucking weird, with this particular game especially. Mirror's Edge has always been about art-style and aesthetic anyway, never claimed to be a cutting edge graphical showpiece.

And I'm glad they put their priorities into framerate instead of visuals, game feels amazing to play.

ME's visual identity was a big part of it's allure. That's style, IQ, use of color and shapes to draw the eye, the works.

It wasn't the only thing, but its no surprise to see people caring about it as much as they might.

The original was "slick looking" alright but if you played on console, it was 720p and 30fps. Now it's 60fps at a higher resolution, that's good enough for me.

It was a part of the allure. But come on, ME was also about gameplay, level design, controls, replayability. Things that very few seem willing to discuss here.

We were talking about nothing but that with the combat video that was released (and quickly taken down) the other day.

Now I'm not the biggest Mirror's Edge fan but I found enjoyment in traversing the environments of the first game mainly because of the design and the sharp, detailed graphical quality. This game doesn't seem to have that. Definitely diminished my interest.

And nothing else!

Whatever. I'm out until more adults get here.

if this is the crap image quality they were going to give us, i'd rather not have a sequel at all

I'll probably get as far as I can in the trial, then wait for the library to get the game in. I have it on hold.

I just can't justify spending money on a Mirror's Edge game after failing to fall in love with the first one. Plus, this one doesn't look or sound that great.

lol, so we're just supposed to completely disregard something just because "at least we got a sequel!!!"

It's a legitimate issue and it's more than okay to bring up and discuss. Should we just ignore the graphics forever?

Never said any of that. It would be nice to hear something about the many other elements of the game. That's all.

Played the xbox one beta and I was surprised by the bad image quality. Now on pc it looks way better, although I am not 100% convinced yet about the new art style and more futuristic city.

the way y'all tricked EA into thinking you wanted them to make a sequel to Mirror's Edge and are now saying you won't buy it because of soft picture quality

Could someone describes the main missions after the Elysium building one?

Also how much of the main game does that reprensent?

Do we know when this review embargo is up? I enjoyed the beta and I'm not particularly worried about it, but I've had enough games bite me quality wise that I'm generally not apt to pay in advance of review columns at this point.

I'm just saying, its definitely one aspect of the whole package. If the IQ is "distracting", then sure it could hamper your enjoyment, and vice-versa.
Its not the end all be all, but everyone has opinions on what matters to them. :)

EDIT: Now lets hear about more aspects of the game!

I see some people very down on the fact that it's an open game as opposed to the level structure of the first, but from my experience in the beta that is one of the things I liked most about it. The openness works within the context of the game. I like the feeling of just running around the open world and exploring it.

The draw of ME was the running/jumping and the nice and unique atmo of the city with its crisp and beautiful graphics.

This reboot completely lost the second point... the whole game looks like an N64 blur filter is over the whole picture and this takes - for me - so much away from the presentation! Just super disappointing!

yeah i dunno what the hell is wrong with this game, technically, it runs really well, but the pop-in is horrendous and the cutscenes are unwatchable slideshows. It's weird as hell.

looks nice on PC ... has 21:9 support too but won't be pre-ordering this one. I'll pick it up when it goes on sale I think

$71.99 is too much

just played it on PC Ultra settings - looked nice but not oh my god sweet Mary hold me nice. Only noticed 1 small flickering texture but that was just in the tutorial part. I am guessing its only 6 hours time limit instead of the usual 10 because its short??

Looking at this I'm pretty excited for a hardware refresh because this shit looks ugly. These consoles are just so damn underpowered.

It's not looking so hot on the PC as well, is there any chance that the developer just messed up with the technical aspect and it's got nothing to do with the hardware?

Battlefront looks marvelous on PS4 and after Uncharted 4 it seems insane to complain about the visuals that those consoles are capable gor, I think that developers are more limited by budget and talent than hardware, some developers prove those consoles can produce amazing visuals,

It certainly wasn't for the level design.

Outside of a few problematic spots the level design in ME1 was actually very good. It has to be for that kind of game, which is why the transition to open world has people so suspicious. We'll see when more impressions roll in.

Can we get some actual gameplay impressions rather than incessant whining over graphics and resolutions please?

Thanks in advance!

The world map has been massively improved since the beta, that's quite nice.

Also I think the complaints about the graphics are way overboard. Yeah, it's not the cleanest IQ and some textures look a bit rough but the art style is still superb and in motion it looks pretty damn good IMO.

I'm an hour and some change into the game and I'm pleasantly surprised. I expected to be a little weary of another open world game but it works in the context of Mirrors Edge. The controls are great, the combat has been fixed, still not the best but serviceable. It has the typical fetch quest type missions that are present in any other open world game but damn it's fun to run and jump around the city. We'll see how I feel after the six hour trial but once I got used to the pace and flow of the game, I'm definitely interested in going back. Graphics are bit meh, but not enough to detract from the experience at least imo.
