I'm about ready to write a 5000 word essay on "What 3D Zelda could learn from Dark Souls"

I'd post a thread on it here, but I get the feeling the fanboys and trolls would shit all over it without even reading =/

Dunno if you'll ever get the people who consider "explorative high fantasy action" vs "series of clever bespoke obstacles" to be the heart of the series, regardless of where its gone for the last 2 decades, to ever agree on anything. The way some people on here talk you'd think there was no possible way that the Souls series could've ever been partially born out of OoT's mold and had improvements to give back, as if a game's merit and effect come solely from its mechanical structure.

I've never played a Souls game and I am a little tired of seeing this lament pop up in Zelda threads but you should still write it. Put it on Medium.

I'd love to read that too, there's plenty Zelda can take from Dark Souls, like the majority of the combat system.

If that Nintendo Direct Mini is true. Nintendo will just uploaded it without telling us, so it can be released anytime within the next 24 hrs.

Has Nintendo ever released a Mini Direct out of the blue? I recall them announcing directs at the last minute, but never broadcasting one straight out of nowhere.

last year, nintendo direct mini was like 1 week or 2 before E3 if i remember correctly, and it was out of the blue as well

Since people are talking about Dark Souls/Zelda maybe one might say that the addition of a stamina bar in Skyward Sword was influenced from Dark Souls? Maybe people want Zelda to be more challenging? I say bring on the 1 shot kills or make it an option. Was there talk of there being a difficulty option? like double damage?

Geez, I don't know which zelda threads are we suppose to discuss about upcoming E3 event since it's all over in few threads here.

Nintendo Direct Mini's are never announced, just released at a random time.

On top of the one already mentioned, there was a Direct Mini in July of 2013 that was released out of the blue as well.

Ah, thank you guys for clarifying. I honestly forgot about the mini direct back in 2013, along with the one that had happened last year.

that direct mini was the reason imo why the 2015 digital event was received so poorly, they announced things that they could have,
should have
show on the E3 digital event

I can't believe Zelda is finally having a full-blown reveal in 13 days. We really have come a long way. After E3 2014 reveal, VGA gameplay and that 5 seconds from Direct, it is finally here! (sob)

It wasn't a complete wash. The segments that involved the puppet versions of Iwata, Miyamoto, & Reggie were pretty fun, but I otherwise agree with you.

Now it's going to be interesting to see what's going to happen in the next one.

oh yeah, it wasnt bad by any means, i was just saying it was received poorly because it lacked any real new announcement, and stuff

I still don't understand why Nintendo did a mini direct and a Smash direct to reveal Ryu. They could've saved some of that stuff to make the Digital Event better.

It leaked big time, why wait and they at least released it the same day.

The 15min smash stuff wouldnt have done much here since as soon as it leaked it was all over Gaf

l absolutely hate Dark Souls combat system and would be done with Zelda as a series if that was the standard for future entries. l know it might be difficult to fathom for some people but not everyone thinks Dark Souls is the end-all and be-all of game design. Some people dislike Dark Souls, what a surprise! lt's a very peculiar type of game that has its own appeal but acting as if it's an objectively superior formula other games should follow to immediately become better is annoying.

Yeah, Zelda fans have come a long way after so many teasers and delays) I hope that everyone are going to be happy with the result at E3.

Im still a little worried that Zelda U being pushed to the NX is indicative of the system having a poor launch line up. If you are pulling games from your old system to make your new one look better that's potentially not a good sign, like take Twilight Princess out of the Wii launch and it wasn't left with much either

Honestly it's more or less a refinement of OoT's z-targeting, so it's pretty easy to see where comparisons come from. Recent Zelda games have really gone nowhere with that system (besides SS, my favorite Zelda btw) where Dark Souls has shown how lock on combat can actually be engaging. It may not be your cup of tea, but combat in Zelda has become way too mind numbingly easy for some of us that it kinda detracts from the overall experience.

If enemies actually attacked aggressively, and if there is a real disincentive in mindlessly swinging the sword constantly, combat gets a lot more engaging and entertaining. I definitely think Zelda needs to keep its focus on blocking rather than Dark Souls' emphasis on dodging, but the actual need to think and plan your attack and defense on the fly would be a very welcome change to the series in my opinion.

Edit:

It's likely more about not "wasting" Zelda on the Wii U than it is about helping to fill up the NX launch lineup.

Yeah. Zelda should add shield parrying, a stamina gauge, dense areas filled with secrets, multiple runs through said areas, weapon and shield crafting, material farming, and a melee combat system that rewards precise, well-timed aggression.

Someone on SS played Demon's Souls

Totally agree. I would love to see the combat improve but not be Dark Souls. The Zelda games have gotten too easy. I think Nintendo tried that with Skyward Sword but I would like to see more engaging combat with traditional controls. I think if Nintendo is going to examine the Zelda series, it is going to have to look at everything even the combat. Is Z targeting still the best way for combat as it means that multiple enemies really can't attack at once which is a little weird?

I do want Zelda's combat to be shaken up, but I'm really not a fan of Dark Souls combat. Personally, I prefer a more action-oriented, fast-paced system with more aggressive enemies, but I know that's probably not a popular opinion.

I wouldn't worry. It's just that Nintendo is releasing the bare minimum games they can on the WiiU because of its tiny install base

I think the biggest problems with Zelda's combat is the lack of aggression from enemies, the lack of options, and the overpowered nature of the shield. SS fixed this a little bit with the shields, but the lack of aggression from enemies and the far too lenient shield bash made it irrelevant.

It's not even necessarily the amount of damage enemies do that's the problem (though that may be part of it) as much as it is the fact that they just do one really slow attack at a time, with not much variety between them. This is one area that the games could learn from Dark Souls. There are times when DS enemies will do one slow attack, but they'll also mix in faster attacks, flailing attacks, and lots of other stuff to keep you on your toes.

I don't need Zelda combat to be anywhere near as challenging as DS or any other game, but as of right now it's just straight up not interesting. And since it's basically 1/3 of the game, they should try to make it interesting.

they're using all this floor space for just ..Zelda.

This screams like this was a last minute call. During january time they probably had planned out NX reveal etc for E3 i mean why else get all that floor space, da fuck.

what if nintendo got confirmation of competitors revealing their new hardware this year too and said fuck it, we'll let them battle it out this E3, we'll reveal it a bit later so NX gets all the attention when revealed

FYI, if you ever not get E3 floor space you go to the back of the line for E3 floor space.

Nintendo will always maintain a booth no matter what because they'd have to sit in line behind a ton of companies if they didn't.

Also potential booth size in floor plans don't mean shit, some companies have massive booth area but most of it is meeting rooms. The last E3 I went to I'd probably say, for example, that maybe only about 40% of their booth area was actual used space. Same with MS and Sony (Sony's had a TON of dead space in it)

I am interested in reading it. Hopefully it won't be just descriptive - you should also give some reasons as to why Zelda should learn from DS.

Under 2 weeks. Goddamn. I wish I could go back in time to the me that was waiting for any news concerning this Zelda game in 2012-2013. And I wish I could take this me back here so that we can watch this E3 together. lol.

Hang on there, past me, it's only gonna be another 4 years until you see a full reveal of Zelda U!

...following Intelliheath on Twitter for the awesome Zelda countdown. Anyone else I should be checking out for E3?
