Mirror's Edge Catalyst EA Access Trial Now Live

Played for a few hours and it's a nice improvement over the beta. A lot more smooth gameplay and looks much better in motion. Missions only get better too. My hype for the game is back.

I'm sure I'll get hit with a flurry of salt since some seem pretty down on the game, but this really feels like the next step forward for Mirror's Edge as a franchise.

Still has the beautiful world, music, smooth running, but now with good combat (sue me, it's fun, just make sure you turn off enemy health bars and directional crosshairs) and for the first time, a story that's worth a damn. I'm pretty satisifed so far.

This was my vibe from the beta and I'm glad to see it's similar in the full game trial.

Great graphics do not a great game make. (Though they help of course.)

ITT I learned people care more about IQ than gameplay

the way y'all tricked EA into thinking you wanted them to make a sequel to Mirror's Edge and are now saying you won't buy it because of soft picture quality

Aye

This game is really good. Feels like the original for the most part. Not sure the wall run is all that responsive though.

Yo, full runner vision is wack.

I originally played the original without any but there are way too many UI options with no visual info on what exactly I'm turning off.

Is there anything under "gameplay" that I must enable?

Like, what does the option Stamina and Focus do? I guess it shows my health, but can I tell just with the corners of the screen anyway? And what does it mean by Focus?

Played for about 45 minutes and it's pretty good. Obviously can't tell if there's $60 worth of content here yet.

I like it better than the first game so far which I only played 4-5 hours of on PS3 since it was free. Definitely a lot more polished. Open world seems to fit it well and skill upgrades give you some progression. Combat's serviceable enough. Easier to tell where to go.

Seems like there's more of an emphasis on the actual running + fighting thus far and not "constantly running from the bad guys as fast as you can".

Yeah this game is definitely going to be bought on sale and not at full price. I liked the first one but this one has way too much emphasis on combat etc. Also it doesn't feel right, not to mention the image quality being wack.

Oh well.

You got that sense even from a limited demo? Was there a lot of unavoidable combat? Or just too much combat encounters in general?

It's not so much that there is more combat -- it's just the only thing really separating this and the other game (outside of the more open-world approach). In the first game you only needed one well times attack to disarm. But in this you hit them until they run out of health.

The combat isn't bad though. It's very spatial. Personally though, it's not for me. It was the weakest part of the original and there's more of it.

Runner's vision makes going from quest to quest very A to B as you get used to it, and because the world design isn't as scripted as it was in the other game, at the very least (and hour in) it isn't very exciting. Turning Runner's vision off is preferable, but again, this isn't as simple as the correct way, long way and short cut. There's so many directions you can take to get to an area and even if one is faster than the other, it's never made clear that it is.

But I'll try to get the rest of my trial done to see how this game goes. I suspect that there are Story missions that will be far more exciting than the rest of the game.

tl;dr this game has all the sorts of problems I thought it would have when being open world

EDIT:

There's a time trial called a Dead Drop Delivery, get to A to B as fast as possible right? On the way there are two collectables. If I pick up the collectables (which cause me to fail the time trial), I don't keep them when I retry it. That's really... really stupid.

EDIT:

So instead of giving us a more subtle visual cue for which doors we can open, you have a big [RT] sign appear on the doors as you get pretty damn close to them, even with Runner's vision off. Why not just make all the open ones a certain colour like in the original? =/

I think I'll just post a list of impressions in a blog somewhere and not clutter this thread.

Played for about an hour on PC at mostly Ultra (textures on high) 1440p unlocked fr w/gsync. Wasn't monitoring framerate, but felt ok for the most part. Have some lights flickering, which I assume is an issue with SLI (980s), but won't be able to get back to it until tomorrow. Also have an audio de-sync issue, as well as uneven performance, during cut-scenes.

I skipped out on the beta but signed up for a month of origin access to get my hands on this a little early. Gameplay seems right up my alley so far. Hopefully I can get my issues sorted out.

How's the mouse and keyboard support in this?

IMO the first Mirror's Edge was so so so much better with a mouse and keyboard. But this one has all that crazy directional combat stuff, that I'm thinking that a controller would be the way to go?

My flickering went away when I set the game's executable to use Single-GPU in the NVidia control panel. (SLI Titan Xs)

I've seen a second or two of desync when some scenes start, but it always catches up. The game seems to be running well.. 1440p, everything on ultra, always north of 60 fps from what I can tell. (too busy trying to not fall to my death to watch the framerate counter the whole time)

So like I haven't followed the game much but will there be DLC? Cause some of the achievements specify "Complete X in the main game". Why specify main game if you don't plan on doing DLC?

Edit: You can set Runner Vision to "Off", "Classic" or "Full"

Yes, you can turn the stamina bars off for enemies (as well as yours if you want)

Not sure about DLC. I'd say only if it's successful. This game only exists because EA figured if they were doing an open world tech demo they may as well sell it

It's a good game, makes me want to replay the first one actually. Still have about 4 hours left on it and the resolution on Xbox isn't bothering me.

I looooove this game so so much! I am also blowing through my six hours too quickly. :/

...since my save files are stored locally, once my six hours is up, is there anything stopping me from making another Origin account, paying another $5, and continuing the game that way? I'm on PC.

The beta worked fine with mouse and keyboard. You couldn't rebind any of the keys, though, and some of the mappings didn't seem right (been too long so I can't remember which :P), but like you said Mirror's Edge just plays so much better with m/kb. The new combat additions were perfectly fine on a keyboard.

You can rebind keys now. They've fixed it since the beta.

Iirc a dev said they were having some issues with the key rebinding screen right before the beta went out, so they just nixxed it.

Pretty sure they've locked some of the missions away until the game is actually released on Tuesday. So even if you did get to see more, you wouldn't be able to finish the game.

Can anyone answer some interface questions for me?

1. How many HUD elements can you disable?

2. Can the frequency of third person takedowns be modified?

Has anyone tested whether the exploit still works to coil jump on a flat straightaway? In the beta I think it went faster than sprinting the same straight line.

I quite like it, but I not 100% sure that the open world works in a game like this, I think ME shines when you have a predetermined route that you can speed run, there feels like there is too much "stop and look around" for such a free running and fast (essilentially) platformer.

Not sure I'd pay full whack for it, but it's not a bad game.

"We want sequels for all the niche games! And we don't want them to change things! But if they are too similar to the prequel we'll complain!" lol

I won't play the trial because I loved the "beta" and won't change opinion before D1.

If I were to sum up the differences between Mirror's Edge and Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, if you would forgive my obscure reference, would be Need For Speed: Underground to Need For Speed Underground 2. Maybe you'll like the addition of the open-world. Maybe it will feel like a time-wasting addition with no real substance. Either way, you're getting more of the same experience.

Only if you already have a thing for Mirror's Edge, would I suggest to pick this up. If you thought the original wasn't all that fun, there is no way Catalyst has anything to offer you. Remember, these are simply impressions from the 6-hour trial provided by EA Access. That isn’t to say I was 6 hours into the game, so don't take this as a review.

tl;dr, yep, it's Mirror's Edge... I'll buy this when it's on sale

The original Mirror's Edge could be finished in only a few hours, so I imagine I will be playing this one for plenty of time with the time trials.

Maybe you could bum-rush the campaign in 6 hours?, but there seems to be plenty of open world bloat to keep you occupied for longer ;)

Yeah this is just speculation of course but judging from that main mission overview in the beta there aren't that many of them (unless of course that page will scroll down)

Let's see what'll be the best way to play this, I'm afraid of getting bored with doing side content only when rushing through a supposedly short campaign too fast. Will probably try and mix it up. Afair some of the upgrades were gated by campaign progress so maybe that's a good way of approaching it.

The game seems really good so far.

Gameplay is excellent, free running feels just as good as the first I feel like the open world adds to the game immensely. Having the freedom to choose your route makes the game far more interesting. And whilst I wish there weren't any forced combat sections, they're not too frequent and the combat is actually pretty decent.

Level design so far seems excellent, the world has some great routes and really fun sections to run around and each story mission I've played has been really good. On the story I'm surprised that I'm actually quite intrigued. There's some pretty average writing here and there but it actually seems pretty interesting so far.

Also the art design is absolutely superb, yeah the game is a bit blurry on the X1 and there's some texture streaming issues but I honestly don't care with how good the design is.

Also turn off runner vision, makes the game a lot better.

Beta was really good on PS4, for those wondering about the quality of the game.

Also, you can actually buy and play the entire game a week early (and get %10 off), not just the demo. that's one of the benefits of EA Access.

Can anyone confirm if this is correct and if it applies to Xbox One and PC? My trial on XB1 is about to run out and if I’m able to purchase it and continue playing that would be great since I would have some new weekend plans, but if I’m locked out until Tuesday I’d rather wait until I can purchase the physical version.

Fairly sure that's incorrect, your progress will carry over, but once the 6 hours is up you'll have to wait till Tuesday.

FIFA had 6 hrs as far as i remember, and in BF hardline you could only play the first 2 campaign missions

That sounds right; I didn’t see anything about it mentioned anywhere in Origin or the Xbox store, so it seemed off. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll wait if anyone else mentions it’s possible but otherwise I’ll hold off until Tuesday.
