Mirror's Edge Catalyst EA Access Trial Now Live

Played it for a while yesterday and it felt so good running around as Faith, even better than the beta for some reason. I'm going to try and meter my time so that I don't run out by Friday and have a huge gap before I can play the full game.

I know.

I'm always sceptical when they change the trial length from the norm 10 hours.
It's not the norm. It's the norm for heavy competitive multiplayer game trials from them, not for campaign based games. BioWare games get 6 hour trials too.

That said, even if the campaign is anywhere from 10-20 hours, a 6 hour trial is a generous piece of the game.

Played for some hours now:

Game is ok. But i really wouldnt pay 60 bucks for it.

IMO it feels so clunky. And that Collectables lol

But at least they fixd the horrible Performance from the Beta. Just like Battlefront. Guess its a almost locked 60fps. Maybe some dips nobody notices. IQ is really weird. Sometimes looks good and sometimes it looks really rough.
And is it me or is there no more Motion Blur?

Just saw the Destructoid Impressions article on Mirror's Edge and man, that story impression.

It does not give me any hope that they will be able to represent anything related to WW1 in Battlefield 1 in a good way. Maybe they should just give up on the singleplayer business and realise the Bad Company campaign was a lightning in a bottle thing.

Also, to those who are playing, how close was my estimate of the playable area?

Can the frequency of third person takedowns be modified?

No. :(

How many HUD elements can you disable?

I won't get back to my computer tonight, but iirc there's more than five toggles. If you want to want to, you can make the hud very, VERY clean.

Oh, and btw, one of those toggles lets you turn off health bars. I actually like them but I know they bothered a lot of people.

Story is crazy subjective so let's not

I said something similar in the beta thread, and obviously opinions always differ, but I am REALLY surprised by all the negativity here.

It's Mirror's Edge, without guns, and with more polished movement. If you liked the original at all, I really don't know why you wouldn't love this. The combat feels good and is mostly skippable. I could have done without the XP upgrades, but when all of the important skills can be unlocked in less than an hour, it's difficult to complain. The open world can be ignored if you just want to play through the story. And while the story isn't great, it serves as a nice background motivation for your actions.

Like... what more do you guys want? :P

Why would you expect a good story based on the beta?

The writing was standard video game fare, with some Hunger Games-esque word contractions thrown in for good measure (foodDome, loCaste, etc)

I don't know either. I just want good free running. Everything else is gravy.

I played through the first game and thought it was an okay time. I didn't love it like a lot of folks.

Played the trial last night for a bit and liked it. Felt very smooth. I liked the look of things and the world in general. I'll probably put some more time into it over the next couple of days, even though I went into it thinking it'd be a one-and-done play-and-delete experience.

Just wanted to add to the positive impressions pile. :D

Maybe so but when 4.5 out of their 6 attempts (the 0.5 being BFBC2, alright but premise was better in 1) at having a story in a game have been not that good, the initial impressions does not speak in Mirror's Edge's favour.

They need to have some kind of story. Mirror's Edge without ANY context wouldn't be as fun.

(I also happen to like the story a lot, BUT I can understand why people don't.)

Is anyone else having trouble with glass walls in the indoor environments? I can barely see them and keep jumping into what looks like air and crashing into a wall.

edit: I ended up just turning on classic vision so I could find where to go

If the parkour is more fun that Dying Light I'm probably in. Dying Light was my zombie littered Mirror's Edge dream come true there for a while. You always had a reason to run, and the more you got to know the open world the more you could take advantage of its traps and shortcuts and safe zones and loot chests. Just a brilliant game that I hope that a new Mirror's Edge can top.

But performance, IQ (jaggies especially, but also tearing) and preponderance on combat are big factors too.

I'd describe that as not working, personally.

Is it just there to be there? Are all the story missions all linear and isolated from it?

They still largely take place within the open world map, but they lead you through it on a pretty direct path.

Think of it like a linear game, except there aren't a bunch of artificial boundaries to either side, so you can theoretically go off and walk in another direction.

Trying not to get my hopes up. I adored the first game, which admittedly had a pretty bland story and rough edges in the gameplay department, but when it clicked it really was memorable.

Still... seeing this...
It's not quite Metroid: Other M bad (okay, it kind of is)

... fill my soul with much dread.

So aside from the open world stuff and the story, are the actual main missions any good? The ones I played in the beta seemed pretty short and simplistic. Do they get better?

Destructoid said:
Is it a big deal insomuch as it ruins the entire game? Not at all.

I don't see the problem.

Oh no what? What have they done? :(

Nothing yet. Just Destructoid said the story isn't very good and the characters - like, all of them - are pretty annoying or unremarkable. Hopefully Faith doesn't have daddy issues with authority figures too... but, well, I don't know.

Played for a while through EA Access on Xbox One.

The good news - graphically it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as it does in screenshots from this thread. It's more fluid at 60fps, too, which helps.

The bad news - the story, and I'm not convinced it works as open world. This isn't Red Dead Redemption where I'll always remember certain locations and going to Mexico.. I can't remember anywhere so far. But early-ish days. I'm just basically following arrows. One of the quests about an hour in is "go and collect some stuff!" and Faith says 'Go and collect some stuff.. Huh!', as if they kinda knew that would be the game.

Nah, they're all divisive this year.

I still think ME is at its best when it is linear, I don't think it lends itself to an open world.
Man I thought I was the only one with that opinion - on paper ME should work well in an open world but what DICE has done with the hub like areas bores me silly once you keep repeating the same crossings over and over again like in the beta.

Perhaps the full game ensures you dont do this that often but I dont have high hopes - I found it really uncreative - perhaps its something that only has that first WOW moment...

The world just isn't really dynamic enough, in most open world games the world is a character in its own right, but the one in ME just isn't diverse enough, there aren't really any memorable areas it just all looks a bit samey.

Just in case no one knew this the Xbox one version has a timed challenge achievement tied to it.

Run 50km in the 6 hour trial.

You unlock an art reward you can use as a background for your dashboard.

I didn't enjoy the beta very much at all, but have now been messing around with the Origin Access trial on the PC.

I'm enjoying. It feels a lot better than the beta. The sense of speed is as good as it was in the first game.

Story/characters/dialouge are all absolute garbage and I hate when the game breaks for a cutscene. I much preferred the more minimal story the first one had. Circling around melee dudes for combat isn't too bad.

Is there any motivation to move though the open world at speed? Or is it just there for collectibles and exploration, and to move between missions?

This is starting to sound like if you liked or loved the first game then Catalyst is for you. If you didn't like it you're not missing much.

Have you played far enough to visit the other districts of the city? The entire beta and my trial playthrough so far has been in the same district.

I haven't, no, so I am prepared to be proven wrong, but I just wonder how diverse can a world like the one in ME get?

Comparing this game to Other M is completely ridiculous.

Oh, and the second district is very different from the first one, visually.

Great attitude

He has a point though. ME's world is basically white plus a bright color depending on the area, and I don't know how many people are going to find exploring a white and blue area to be new and exciting after exploring a white and green area for a bunch of hours.

Great attitude
What attitude? I've made a judgement based on the trial the developers have provided, I haven't written the game off, I said I'm prepared to accept that the full game might prove me wrong.

I still am not convinced how diverse a modernistic, mainly white environment can be.

The districts are quite different from each other. Also, don't forget there is a night/day cycle so it's basically a whole new experience.

Figured that would always be the case with this title. It certainly isn't going to attract people who disliked the first game as the concept is still the same. It may bring in some new people, but the game won't be a massive sales success story.
