I think the theory of an evil Goku from another universe/timeline has earings that can make him fuse with Goku of other timelines in which he defeats them and gains their power.
This Goku is trying to become the most invincible warrior. Along with this, he is after Future Trunks because he doesn't believe there isn't a Goku alive anymore in his timeline.

Either way this new arc is the hypest I've been for Super so far and I've been enjoying it a ton.

Frost is alt Freeza, basically. Looks and sounds the same, even. I know it's less likely but I don't see why alt Goku couldn't exist. Or not-Goku, since Frost is not-Freeza more than alt Freeza
Obviously they're not the exact same person, but the similarities are so striking that it's like a different version of him. Same voice, appearance, transformations, even job as emperor of the universe.

Black Goku is literally called Goku, and that is Trunks and they even said it's the same Trunks from Z.
They aren't from Universe 6.

Unlikely. If this guy is meant to be as strong as Goku and Vegeta(Which he will be) the rest of the cast stand no chance at doing anything. In the Cell Saga at least Cell had weaker stages before his perfect form that allowed the Z Fighters to somewhat put up with him. But if this new bag guy is to be any kind of threat he needs to be god level strength so rip any chance of Gohan or the Z Fighters doing anything worthwhile.
If this evil Goku is powerful enough to be a threat to good Goku... what could they possibly do to help?

Those movies have an established romance between young trunks and mai so uni 6 and this arc were probably continuing off from the movie continuity in toriyamas head at least
I kind of expect Goku and maybe Vegeta to be sidelined for a bit like characters were in every major Z arc, only to get some powerup later etc etc.

this is Future Trunks we are talking about, he never has those interactions with the Pilaf Gang due to never beating the androids and Cell until he was much older.
Doubt it, the only thing that could have sidelined Goku has been resolved which was his Ki issues after Kaioken.

do we know for a fact if it's future Mai? got a feeling our Mai gets a wish to be older again and then falls for future Trunks
well it's assuming them being together on this image is a call back to their previously established relationship in the movies or connected in some way. Considering Toriyamas direct involvement in the movies and his direct involvement with the new super arcs it's probably just one story to him and the changes made in the show arcs might not have any impact on what he does. I'm going to guess he considers trunks and mai already established, even though the show removed it.
Anything could happen. There's barely any information on the new story right now.
Well depending on the artwork Trunks is sometimes drawn with blue hair, here I believe it is to diffierentiate Kid Trunks to Future Trunks.
Is there a need for that when Kid Trunks is still a kid?
