Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

The G1 shows (at least on Amazon) these specs:

Power by GeForce GTX 1080
Integrated with 8GB gddr5x 256bit Memory
Boost: 1860 MHz / base: 1721 MHz in OC mode
Boost: 1835 MHz / base: 1695 MHz in gaming mode
Support up to 8K Display @60Hz (Requires 2*dp1.3 connectors)

I'd imagine they're just playing it safe and you'd be able to overclock to 2000Mhz at least?

Does it matter if it's custom at this point? I thought these cards could barely reach 2100Mhz? Wouldn't the G1 1080 reach close to that?

Maybe they aren't able to reach high OCs but they are able to mantain higher boost clocks almost all the time without turning the fan curve to 100%.

I believe the Gigabyte Gaming is only 1 x 8 pin. I think I'll just wait on the extreme, hopefully that comes out soon. Plus I get taxed on Amazon anyways.

Wouldnt that not matter since it seems that AIB cards cant OC above what the reference card is already capable of?

Oh jeez, does Amazon usually tax graphics cards? I've never been taxed by Amazon before.

Assuming you are in the USA - that just means that Amazon has a physical business in your state. That is the way state sales tax works unfortunately. If you didn't get charged Tax on amazon prior, congrats you have a new shipping facility in your state!

EDIT: My state also gets charged tax because of their shipping facility here. Normally I don't mind for most of the stuff I normally buy but for large purchases I try to stay away. I have the FTW ordered on Amazon but would love to switch it over to Newegg where I save money on tax.

FTW is a custom board...SC is stock

FTW has 2 8-Pin power connections...SC has 1

FTW will have a higher OC out of the box

Might be a dumb question, but if I have a motherboard that requires a 8-pin connection and get an FTW that means I need a PSU that has 3 8-pin or 6+2-pin connectors right? This was the motherboard and PSU I was planning on getting.

I couldn't find info that listed which type of connection the motherboard needed. I know the PSU has 2 6+2-pin connectors. Any recommendations on a motherboard and PSU around 650W, in case I was about to grab the wrong one? Thanks.

Woohoo...Newegg halp.

You're fine. The 8 pin connector for the CPU is different from the 8 pin connectors the GPU requires. If you look at that PSU, the 8 pin for the CPU is just labelled "CPU1." The two 8-pins for the GPU are labelled "VGA1" and "VGA2".

I believe there are some motherboards that can take an (optional) additional power input for high end overclocking but that doesn't apply to you, as far as I can tell.

I would guess ~7 months/early 2017. If you upgrade GPU's by selling your old one a 1070 wouldn't be a bad investment, it will have much better resale value when the time comes for the 1080Ti.

This. The 1070 would be a great stop-gap card and you won't lose massive amounts reselling.

I'm tempted to do this yes... but do we have any idea when 1080ti will show up?

I'm hearing that it should be this year, Oct-Dec probably. But the question is what will the cost be considering that 1080 is $600. If it'll be more than $700 then I'm out till 2017 and AMD's competition.

hmm... What game should I buy using the money I DIDN'T spend on sales tax? Decisions decisions... ;)

I really hope that June 17th date for the EVGA cards is true for Amazon and that the one-week delay rumors are false (or at least aren't affecting Amazon shipments).

GTA5? I'm planning on testing out the card with that and The Witcher 3

Have it! I can't wait to test GTA with the added draw distance. I was limited by vram before. I'll probably get Doom, but not until I finish Blood and Wine.

Warhammer Total War is another good one. But GTAV and Doom are going to be the ones I check out first.

I'm realizing, this new card might trigger some additional upgrades. I'm planning on throwing the 1080 card into an older PC. CPU is core i5 2500K Sandy Bridge.

I suppose a new mobo, CPU, memory and SSD are probably in the cards next. I just wish there was an easy way to upgrade without going the full monty and gutting everything.

Alright, thanks.

So even after market cards with extra oc on top of the oc out of the box score less than my 980 ti in FireStrike. Seems like in games though an OCd 1080 does slightly better than my 980 ti. Probably my xeon 1231v3 is holding back my frame rates a bit.

The custom board and extra power pins are basically rolling the dice on whether you think there is some magical bios coming down the line that'll unlock another 200MHz. Who knows?

But most people should look to overclock to around 2000MHz if they can. Otherwise you're just buying an expensive card that is only 10% faster than an overclocked 1070.

Historically, 3D benchmarks haven't been entirely accurate representations of game performance. While the benchmarks are a fun way to show off the power of a card, it's how it performs in games that truly counts.

I'm still kind of iffy about applications like 3DMark after the whole "scandal" where both graphics cards companies produced special drivers for the benchmarks that cheated to get better results. It's been a while since this happened, but I haven't paid attention to these things since then.

Also rolling the dice on whether you might get that magical piece of silicon that clocks well.

Soon, 1080GAF. Soon.

It looks like Gigabyte sold out on Amazon. If you were waiting on this one, Newegg is going to have them at ??????? time. lol

lol, the newegg listing has been up for a few days, and the gigabyte twitter has been sending people to that page. Also, with a little bonus, which I linked above. Hopefully one of these cards is getting ready to ship.

Nice

Have there been any reviews yet on the Gigabyte?

got 3 1080s preordered now lol, the G1 Gaming, non-SC EVGA with ACX cooler, and the EVGA FTW

Not sure what to stick with... likely will go with whatever ships first

Just for the heck of it I contacted amazon CS and asked about the Strix and it's availability tomorrow.

They know just as much as ASUS does....
nothing

That looks great.

Hoping for a AIO bracket to come out soon, lol.

Thanks! Hopefully AIOs and aftermarket PCB blocks come out within a reasonable timeframe. I'm sure they're working on it.

Another note, for anyone thinking of putting a waterblock on their FE 1080, the process of removing the screws that hold the cooler to the card is a pain in the ass. nVidia used these hexagonal hollowed screws that need to be removed with a tiny needle-nose plier with extreme caution to not fuck up any of the circuitry around them. There are ~12-14 (don't remember exactly) screws like this which need to be removed.

Pretty stressful process.

I have like 3 1080s on pre-order at the moment now. Wish there were reviews on everything , I'm leaning towards still trying to get the Strix but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
