Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

What was your total on those PrimeRib?

I picked up more than just that. All told with CPU, Mobo, Mem, SSD, Power Supply, new Case, about $1050 with about $100 left in rebates to claim. I could've saved money online but I didn't want to wait. Itchy finger.

If I want to get a blower card which one would be the best to get, anyone hear anything about evgas blower card?

Your choice would be FE/reference or non-FE/reference blower style cooler. All EVGA blowers are reference AFAIK. Reference blowers are usually better than non-reference.

Which mobo did you get? What's the general consensus on mobo brand, asus / msi / gigabyte / ASRock?

I ordered 2 PNY founders on Amazon yesterday. It just updated to say they will arrive on Friday. yay. My new build is complete minus gpu

Man I am so tempted to just get the damn founders edition. I know it will be a mistake, but with all this bad communication from everyone else it is so tempting!

At this point, I'm tempted to just wait for the 1070. I'm only gaming at 1080 and in VR. Think I might use the $700 I was gonna spend on the GTX 1080 and just upgrade my system instead (new CPU, mobo, ram, psu) and stick with my R290 until things settle down.

So difficult to wait.

Honestly, the two cards I would prefer are the Gigabyte Xtreme or ASUS STRIX because they have 2x HDMI, great for VR.

The EVGA and MSI cards have only 1 HDMI, making connecting my Rift and my TV unnecessarily difficult.

It looks a lot higher quality than the G1. I think I'm going to wait, or play the return game with Amazon to get this.

Hmm, what do you mean? I have an HTPC setup, and want to get a Vive eventually. Is that going to be some big pain in the ass?

Jump in, the water's fine. I just finished with custom build about 10 minutes ago, still updating all the drivers now.

Funny how a new GPU can make you all weak in the knees for a sweet upgrade.

Went from
i5 2500K Sandy Bridge to i7 6700K Skylake

8GB 1866 DDR3 to 16GB 3200 DDR4
1TB 7200 HDD to 1TB M.2 SSD

Now I'm just waiting for the final piece of the puzzle ...

This is what I was telling another member today about upgrading his Sandy Bridge - 6700K or Kaby Lake later on. 2500K is a fine chip, but it's missing other features too. You will see a lot of improvement with this build, not only game related.

I have a HTPC setup and a Vive. I ended up using a display port-to-hdmi connector to the TV, leaving the hdmi port for the Vive. The Vive breakout box has a mini display port but doesn't seem to work.

edit-This problem seems to be a Nvidia card issue according to Reddit and the steam Vive forum.

Oh right the Vive needs an hdmi port. I never even put that together, hmm.

Do they both need to be on the GPU? My motherboard has an hdmi, would that be of any use?

I thought an i7 was an i7. Is my 3770k garbage? Can I even run an Oculus with it?

B&H is back up for those who were waiting to put in an order for a 1080 EVGA FTW from there.

No tax for me in Ohio and free two day shipping. If they get their act together quicker than Amazon I'll just cancel with Amazon. Saves me about $40 after tax to just stay with B&H

I went from i5 2500K -> i7 2600K -> i7 6700K, and the difference is most noticeable in open world games. Reduced stuttering.

Just snagged one too. No tax shipped to Washington, DC.

Sure those ports on your motherboard will utilize your CPU, which should be fine for your TV display, leaving the GPU for the Vive. Depending on your mobo manufacturer, you might have to go into the bios to enable that. You would have to swap cables around every time you wanted to use the Vive though. The DP/HDMI adapter is your best bet(they cost maybe $20) to leave everything plugged to the GPU.

Any specific games, per se?
I've been installing utilities for the afternoon, and just finished getting Steam up. Which games to install first?

Witcher 3 definitely seemed to have reduced stuttering for me, which was good as I was using ini tweaks to crank grass and shadow draw distance beyond standard ultra. The leap wasn't ground breaking, but I found a general improved of increased minimum framerate and frame stability, so a more consistent performance on the lower end.

I'm not educated enough on why this is the case, but yeah. Just seems to more efficiently handle the data load and streaming. It's never perfect, and it's not ground breaking, but given the hundreds of hours I've poured into The Witcher 3 it was here I saw the clearest improvement.

You're not alone on Witcher.

In the DF videos I have seen on YouTube they mentioned not only increased frames but also reduced stuttering were the main advantages in moving from Sandy Bridge to the 6600/6700 series.

1080 is now watercooled. Getting around ~46-48 C under load with absolutely no throttling to speak of. Will post graphs and whatnot later. Overclock ceiling seems to be hitting at around ~2100mhz core.

Jacob Freeman, EVGA Product manager, is saying on Twitter that their cards are seeing the first shipment a week from now. He's saying that those are likely just EVGA orders. He's going to update when Amazon is supposed to get theirs. Not looking like we are getting these very soon.

Can't find it, do you have a link?

EDIT: Nevermind I see it, thanks!

Of course, gotta wait til all the impatient suckers to buy the FE first.

To people that preordered the Gigabyte G1 on amazon..

Does it say this for your order?
Not yet shipped
Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date.

When I got my order in it said 'temporarily unavailable' but now it just flat out says 'unavailable'. Maybe I should contact CS to see if I got my order in, in time.

Yes, this is normal. It said temp unavailable because it was a pre-order, not something in stock.

It seems like the same outcome to me in the overclock video. I would change CPU's in the near future - if it were me, I would do it with Sky Lake. Kaby Lake should be fine as well. There are other reason's to upgrade your CPU. For instance, Sandy Bridge does not support DDR4 RAM or PCIe 3.0. Your RAM speed is limited to 1333MHz DDR3, I could me wrong here, but I think it's accurate.

You're not limited to 1333MHz, that's only the official support but 1600, 1866 and 2133 all work fine with XMP enabled. DDR4 and PCIe 3.0 aren't reasons to upgrade (that would be the improved CPU performance that has nothing to do with either), they're bonuses that offer negligible real world performance.

Will that have any negative effects on sound? I thought DisplayPort only transmitted picture (forgive me, I'm pretty dumb with this stuff)
