Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

An E3 announcement would be terrible for Xbox One sales and any Xbox One exclusives they have lined up and would do enormous damage to the Xbox brand over the year and a half before it arrives. Its not going to happen before Q4 2017 at the earliest - the specs are targets and much of the hardware is at least a year out if you believe the numbers and components that have been thrown around. Contrast that with a console we know is launching this year - the Neo has had devkits in the hands of 3rd parties since 2015. Even if they cloned the Neo's APU they wouldn't be able to launch this year because you need to start full production in Aug/Sep and they don't even have dev kits out, much less supply chains and foundry space booked. They're much better off waiting until they can guarantee a visible step in performance over the Neo at a similar price point and that wont be till late 2017 to (more likely) 2018 when Vega, Zen and HBM make that plausible.

I see the Neo leaks as having caught Xbox off guard on both timing and capability and they're scrambling to bring what was planned as a true next gen product forward to compete. This is somewhat similar to what happened when Xbox announced and released the 360 more than a year before Sony was comfortable launching the PS3.

I doubt a Scorpio announcement would be anywhere as damaging as you make it out to be.

I cant see how anyone can reconcile announcing the XO Scorpio on the same event as the XO Slim wouldnt be damaging, especially as we know how easily their mixed messaging hit mainstream media on the XO launch.

How would a clear message about an improved XO in 2017 not be something that would be newsworthy in the same degree.

Yeah I think HBM2 availability is even pushing late 2017 myself - I wonder how much AMD values these console contracts over their own products...

EDIT: Is it even wise to potentially target non-holiday for an upgraded console? I cant remember the last time a console wasnt launch at that time (its normally only slims/redesigns that are)

Forza horizon 3, 4k60fps and VR support.
Kill Neo and GT sport hype, two bird one stone.

Haha, I appreciate the ideas. It's not that I don't think MS is incapable of showing off something that'll graphically impress.

It's that with Scorpio likely being Fall 2017, will they be able to show off something akin to a playable GoWIV demo showing off the Neo (presumably).

Specs are good, but I think a game sells a new device much better then specs.

I'm not so sure about that. I was reading the E3 rumors thread by Nirolak and the general impression I got was that if Scorpio is shown at this E3 but launching next fall, its a largely reactionary move to stop Sony from getting that solo unveil.

And while that may work, I think it's going to come down to the following:

Will MS have games to show?

Because I think the hype from seeing specs potentially is much less then say, seeing God of War IV running on Neo.

MS are going to need a game demo to truly be effective.

Well, they have teams building their games for Xbox One and PC. They could show the PC version of any game on ultra settings so people get an idea of what's to come.

Additionally, they could share stage time with Oculus to show what kind of VR experiences they want to enable.

Fair points. So potentially (maybe) Gears 4, Forza and whatever else demoes well. That could work.

The unanswered question is why? I don't think an e3 announcement with no final specs, no release date, a pre alpha demo on a "target spec PC" and no actual hardware or price would do anything good. With the NX looking increasingly like it's been delayed to 2017 it's not realistic to think that people would hold off spending holiday dollars on something they can pick up and use the same day for the vague hint that there would be a new Xbox coming a year later. Most people wouldnt care about the fact that it's more powerful till it's actually released and comparisons start coming out. The best play would be to cut the price of the slim Xbox One and hold a PS4 style reveal event for the Scorpio complete with demos and a release window a few days before the Neo goes on sale. I don't think that'll do much to slow Neo sales down but it would at least stop Sony from having the holiday mindshare all to themselves. They've been caught out so that's pretty much the best they can hope for at this point.

AMD has pretty much nothing outside the custom APU business. If Microsoft was going to pay them I'm sure they'd find a way to make it work for late 17. I also agree it's probably better to wait till the holiday anyway. You get tonnes of free marketing and you also get lots of games releasing. With Sony and presumably Nintendo already launched they'd have the window all to themselves and guarantee at least one NPD win to kick things off. If they can't hit holidays 2017 they're better of waiting a year and either pushing the specs up even higher or cutting the launch price point.

As far as Scorpio being announced at E3 or not, I mean, the supposed purpose of the Scorpio is to be similar to the "Elite" controller in that every few years, a new iterative console will be released much more powerful than the prior one but the games all run on the different Xbox systems within the platform. Microsoft could announce Scorpio, hit the Xbox One with a massive price drop, and set the stage for the idea that those two systems are catering to two different groups of people. Eventually the Scorpio will take the Xbox One's audience when the next version comes out after it.

I'm personally expecting a Spring 2017 release.

It would be more damaging to allow rumors to control the first impressions of Scorpio for months on end.

This is where I am at also. Spring serves as a nice place to entice upgraders to perhaps wait for the latest and greatest...

At this point, E3 cant come soon enough, so we get some clarity.

They could say something like we are working on the future of the platform and looking forward to sharing what that is at another time. Everyone would get the hint

Fair point.

Let me know when you have a cogent point to make.

Reveals of hardware and software are often done in anticipation of competitors' moves.

Sony had no business showing DC in 2013 with proclamations a free version was around the corner....

Like Primethius stated, it did not work well...

I was legitimately asking what you meant, relax, why so defensive? LOL if you think Scorpio will stop people from buying NEO's or PS4's. DC was not revealed to steal forza hype, it was revealed to have another racer in sonys portfolio. At the time of showing DC they did not know it was gonna get delayed for so long, your post is fan fiction.

Do you really think anyone stopped buying forza or xboxs because of the reveal? You think sony a mega corp thinks this way ?

Oh I dont disagree but while AMD has preferential orders from Hynix for HBM2 why employ those in these systems where they probably dont make that much money from? Well thats how it was implied from the previous PS4/XO contracts and nVidias remarks.

Seems sensible to use that ability to ship their own cards and attempt to be a dGPU competitor.

For a gaming convention stream?

Yes, and it's not a simple gaming convention stream, it's E3 with the possibility of new hardware talk. Probably if I don't skip it I will be reading all that happens and my focus would be on my phone and not the class.

What if I told you I fully expect Microsoft to do their normal pre-E3 press cycle run up and announce a few things starting tomorrow? I actually expect this week to have more official news than most people think.

I agree, but I also think we will start getting some leaks. Main reason is that MS is using Spike TV in the USA for broadcasting the show, it is commercial free and is 90 minutes. It has to start on time and end on time, no question. Unlike the other E3 press conferences, they have the luxury of running late/running long etc. For MS, they will be running through full dress rehearsals in order to ensure that they have everything they want in the 90 min time frame that it must hit. With that many dry runs and such, chances of things leaking are high. But then again, we had no clue about BC and the Elite controller last year, so perhaps certain things will be kept tight lipped.

How do you know?
What if the market rejects incremental upgrades and Microsoft and Nintendo calls it a new generation?

I know nothing. I asume that while both Scorpio and NX have the potential to be strong competition, none of them has the potential to actually "kill Neo (hype)". If the Neo idea works, it will sell, independent from a Scorpio announcement or an NX launch.

If MS launches a new gen, I'm pretty sure there will be a huge uproar from current xone users!
Also MS has a history with abandoning gens, the moment they release a new one!

Um, they've been 50/50. They ditched the Xbox immediately, but supported the 360 a couple years after the One launched.

They won't frame it as a new generation. If they do it still won't sway the Sony majority and it sets them up to have a two year old next gen console when the PS5 hits. They'll pitch it as a "Pro" model or etc.

A history of abandoning gens?

They've only had three console generations dude. Also the new consoles aren't exactly what you'd call a normal console generation.

There will be an uproar from some XOne users nonetheless. Won't matter if they announce Scorpio or not. Not saying here that the uproar is justified.

Free scorpio for everyone too.

I mean, go all in while we are at it. Right?
Yeah, I'd take these rumors to be more likely Sony and Microsoft went to AMD about working on shrinking dies and AMD came back with this option as being cheaper with the ability to put out a faster version around the same price as what's selling currently and this scorpio rumor just sounds like someone heard specs for what was going to be the rx 480 as the part that scorpio world be based off, did some tough numbers and came up with 5-6TF. This thread reads like everyone adding a bit more and a bit more. "Well, it's still a ways out, so maybe they can do 8TF by launch." "Probably can do HBM2 by that date." "I'm sure they would use Zen cores if it's fall next year, you know, to go along with that 12TF gpu." At this rate, the day before E3, it's going to be "My body is not ready! Here we come 16TF, 12 core Zen, 16gb HBM2, hardware backwards compatible with 360, runs full Windows 10, and is a free upgrade to all Xbox One owners available NOW through digital download!"
