Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Anyone else looking to get a 1080 for 1080p gaming at 144Hz?

Seems that some reviews and benchmarks are leaving out the 1080p resolution category because "it's definitely overkill for 1080p" but I'm not so sure, especially for folks with 120 or 144Hz monitors.

I'm seeing my local Micro Centers sell the MSI 1080 Gaming X and the MSI 1080 Seahawk. They are charging way too much for it right now though.

If I want a quiet 1080 with a small factory OC, is there an option for that yet?

I currently have a 970 with a decent amount of coil whine and it is pretty loud with its fans too.

Basically any of the custom non-blower style ones should be ok. MSI got good comments for being quiet but we haven't seen many of them compared specifically for noise.

Or grab any of the reference cards and slap an AIO water cooler on it

Here is Guru3Ds MSI for comparison:

I could be wrong but is your Physics / CPU score seems low for a 6700K. I score over 14000 with my Xeon 5650 overclock. This is a 7yr old CPU.

EDIT: Nope, apparently 6700Ks score between 12000-14000 on the Physics test. I figured it would be higher.

In terms of benchmarks, if it helps at all... games getting 60 fps at 1440p corresponds roughly to ~110 fps at 1080p. So you can kind of reverse engineer the benchmarks a bit for your purposes.

Grrrrr... fuck Fedex. I had no idea that they required signature on delivery so I used my home address instead of my office. I'm at work during the week like a normal adult, so my 1080 was taken back aboard the truck and won't be attempted again until Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to go pick it up 15 miles away at my city's Fedex distribution center. Yay.

So, the different versions are confusing. Of the SC, FTW, Strix, or one of the general Founder's Edition, which is 'best'? Hard to grok with no direct comparisons.

"Best" is in the eye of the beholder. In terms of OC potential, it's pure silicon lottery. In terms of noise, the cards with custom coolers will be quieter than the FE/reference cards. In terms of buzzing/coil whine, you'll probably have better luck with the custom designs, especially the higher-end offerings from EVGA.

EVGA also has the best warranty and customer service. Given how close all the cards are in terms of performance, that might be enough to put them over the top.

I bought two for this reason. "Overkill" doesn't exist.

Amazon...Y u do dis..

Really disappointed in their lack of ability to get cards from any of the partners.

Simultaneously really glad I bit on that MSI Gaming X card from Newegg yesterday, as it's scheduled to arrive within hours from now. Really wanted to get the card before I had to leave town for a week for E3. Meanwhile Amazon still seems to have no clue when it will get any cards in.

That's me! For now at least.

At some point I may take the 970 I am replacing and put it back in my old i5 2500k machine that I recently replaced. At that point I'll probably buy a 1440p G-Sync monitor, so I can use my 1080p G-Sync monitor with that older machine.

Thanks for the info! Should provide useful when I eventually do start to shop for these new cards (when they are reliably in stock). Still not too sure whether to upgrade to the 1070 or 1080, coming from a 780ti.

My G1 shipped. Arriving Thursday (even though I have Prime grrrrr).

Yo fam if my Fiance asks I got the MSI GX for $300.

Dude, I'm a pro at this. When the money comes out, you get furious too. Tell her, "What?! I'll contact them and take care of this!" then hope she forgets. If she doesn't, sell stuff and promise not to buy things again.

Meanwhile, dat pre-order list....

Since the MSI Gaming X is still up for pre-order on Amazon, is it safe to assume they don't know their stock and this could be backlogged until July? I'd love to get that instead of the FTW to match my case and motherboard. Hell, I will trade and pay the difference for anyone who got an MSI Gaming X and wants an FTW.

Yo what? Amazon US? Not the founders edition correct?

my gigabyte g1 is in, got a good price on the titan so barely cost me any extra money, it's not much of an upgrade in terms of performance although it is noticeable, main reason i got it though is the noise and heat, this is very quiet in my case, overwatch@1080p@153fps@55 c (13-15c cooler than before), temps are worth it alone and this room is now much cooler, not overclocked it but seems to reliably boost to 1974mhz out the box, seen 2000mhz briefly

How much was the FTW? I usually get EVGA cards and could only get the Gaming X from Newegg. It will be here on tuesday.

I'm quite lucky in a way. My wife spends quite a bit on her sewing hobby and I can usually justify a decent computer-related purchase. She's totally against VR for some reason though. I'm still going to rock this GTX 970 til at least 2017 I believe. I can't wait to see what will be available early next year.

I just got an email. My estimate is Wednesday. I contacted customer support yesterday and they upgraded me to 1 day shipping for free

Yeah, I'm not even going to be able to use it until next Sunday since I'll be out of town. It's gonna suck waiting to leave vacation to install a video card lol

Nice. My wife just quickly forgives me. I only upgrade my computer once in a while. So this year's upgrades will be something to last me until past 2018. Last time I did an upgrade was 2012.

I hope they don't require a signature for the package.
