Do they combine and make a mega console if you buy all three?

Yes

What mad man wouldn't even think up such a concept?

Too many designers think "The Fyoooo-cher!"is removing fucking buttons and its so annoying

The day the industry loses tactility is the day im outta this hobby, which is why im fine with things like the Kinect as a microphone and camera but I despise everything else about it so much

Very Blackcomb and Vienna, I guess he only read the article, thanks Jason

The car industry went through the touch control fad too, that ended quick as hell when the realized it was an absolutely horrible idea.

Just tomorrow to get through and then BAM! E3 begins.

Hype HYPE HYPE!

Yeah, I am getting the same level of hype for all of E3. I have a big BBQ at my house for friends that are moving away, about 26 people so that will make tomorrow fly by. Then getting up early to have breakfast on Sunday with my wife before she leaves on a business trip for 4 days, which I happen to have the same 4 days off.

That leaves me all of Sunday to watch the EA presser and what else is on Sunday, then wake up Monday morning, make some coffee and breakfast, read Gaf for a bit and then turn off the computer and watch the presser on Spike TV. Will play the Halo Wars 2 beta (if it is available) until the next conference and be reading Gaf for long while. Will settle into the evening with the Sony presser and then switch to the NBA Finals while browsing some more Gaf.

Hype levels are pretty high. I am really hoping for some really good game announcements, seeing what the Xbox Slim looks like and hopefully get something Scorpio related.

It's known that the division that he oversees is. And I'd bet his vision and design feedback has been integral to whatever they're making hardware wise.

Yeah, it makes sense for him to be heading the hardware side of things. The Xbox Slim is probably going to be REALLY nice, but the Scorpio might be something else entirely.

Phil Spencer dropping the backwards-compatibility bomb last year still makes me beam. It was so out of nowhere - no leaks, no one thought it was possible; even in hype and 'dream-list' threads it was absent.

Easily my favourite announcement of any E3 I've watched.
It was a moment that legit took everyone by surprise. Noone supsected it at all.

Shame that Sony had such a big hype surprise with their megatons, it kinda overshadowed everything.

If I'd have to rank all conferences of last year it would probably look like this:

Bethesda > Microsoft = Sony > EA > PC Gamer > Ubisoft > Square Enix > Nintendo

Everyone knew what games Beth were showing but it was still the most awesome conference out of all. Doom gameplay, thar damn awesome intro video, the music, 30mins of Fallout 4, Fallout Shelter, Dishonored 2 reveal, Todd Howard....god damn everything was so epic and yet real.

Eh, the BC announcement was only really overshadowed here, and on other 'veteran' gaming forums. I recall it being the most upvoted announcement on Reddit of everything last E3, and I'd take Reddit as a sample-group relatively indicative of the general public.

The BC announcement was also met with a lot of skepticism at the time because it wasn't native, and relied on MS and publishers cooperating. That had people dubious - it had sounded like the OG Xbox BC on the 360.

Backwards Compatibility was a great out of the blue announcement- as you said no leaks, very little inkling of it happening. Will we get something like that this year though? I hope so :)

I've seen mentions that MS said they had '2 more comparable announcements' to make. Though I've never found a source.

Free Xbox Live, Mod-support, Windows/Steam, and OG Xbox BC are the only things I can imagine with anything close to it.

Edit: Per responses below, I don't believe free Xbox Live will ever happen.

Free multiplayer would certainly be a shocker...

But I can't believe it. I bet Phil and many other folks from the Xbox division would want that but higher ups from MS certainly won't let them because of all the Gold subscription revenue Microsoft would lose...which is probably alot more than actual console sales

Free XBL is a pipe dream and will never happen. Mod support is the only reasonable one there imo.

I wouldn't say free online play is never ever. Unlikely but Microsoft need all the help they can get to make W10 ecosystem, store successful and that's way more important than paid online.

Mod support is something Microsoft should be jumping right into, leverage the PC and tools to build stuff, communities, collaborate.

If they can make the Gold sub attractive for purchase, it's quite possible the MP paywall could be dropped at some point. As others have said it makes more sense when they are unifying Xbox console and PC.

There's lot's of things could be offered in the sub to make it attractive. Such as -

Better 'free' games
Regular Beta access
1 v 100 like initiatives with prizes
Dedicated servers for games which are otherwise player hosted
Other stuff I haven't thought of

Not saying they will. But to me it's a much more modern and less restrictive approach to things. If they can find a way of pulling it off it would be a big positive for the platform with potentially greater revenue in the future. Everything in games is slowly but surely moving to ecosystems and service driven. I think there will be a lot of new ideas and implementations in the future all driven by competition.

They should just release a shooter or moba with ingame skins and create a market place where you can buy and sell those skins

They'd make millions. Just look at csgo

Oh my, it looks like I won't be able to watch this years show live :(

---

I'm sure they'll announce Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Windows 10.

I'm in China this year and will only be able to watch afterwards. Internet here is neither very fast nor reliable but I hope I can watch the best bits at least.

Microsoft had a good E3 last year that was overshadowed (once again) by Sony's thanks to a few amazing announcements (Shenmue III did it for me). I hope Microsoft have an ace or two up their sleeves this time around. They really need it right now. (Alan Wake is obviously not happening but I wonder why we can't have Project Gotham Racing back. Let Forza rest for a while.)

So what does everyone think the 'xbox one slim' will cost? Stick to the 299.99 price point? They'd be crazy to make that price higher. right?

I'm feeling $299. I don't see the new box being cheaper than the current system deals. Especially when most retailers have at least a 14 day return policy.

That being said, I wouldn't complain about another price drop! I just bought my Quantum Break Xbox bundle from Best Buy at $349. I already called once to get a price adjustment to $299 and have no problem calling again if we see another drop.

Now as for a higher price point? I think it would need to be more than just a slimmer Xbox to justify that.

They barely make games run in vanilla mode on Xbox One, mods will just be a mess unless they are heavily curated.

I'm actually thinking the Slim could be $249 / £199 for the bare bones version, those are only 50 snots more right now (O_O)!

There's a shit ton of cost savings they can have done over the OG version. APU shrink, MOBO shrink, less and cheaper plastics / components. Etc.

Sexy new price, model and games to tide them over until the Scorpion!

If not at first then within a year / during holiday fire sales and stuff.

If they just show a trailer at the conference, an extended gameplay demo on the show floor/for games media would almost assuredly be there.

This is Forza guys, they will have gameplay demos with all the publications and have playable demos on the show floor.

With Panos Panay at the helm is there a chance he could surprise us with an nVidia gpu since the use them for the Surface Pros?

I wondered that, with them maybe going for some kind of 1070 esque GPU.

The problem is Nvidia don't have great APU solutions, in particular the CPU side of things. Plus they are generally more expensive than AMD.

So possible but highly unlikely.

Listening to Rebel FM last night, Gies will have another article up before E3 about MS plan at E3 to pitch their vision of Xbox during the conference.
