I wonder if they'll pull the Xbox 360 Elite (or was it Slim?) thing again, with consoles under chairs and a surprise announcement of release.

Yeah, despite Sony's great game announcements, I always think Microsoft won E3 that year because backwards compatibility and the underlying reason (if you own a game, it shouldn't go away with each subsequent system) was just such an awesome announcement for any of the big three to make. That's an announcement that'll have implications beyond any specific game.
I think free Live is possible if, like you said, they make Gold attractive enough to have just by itself; however, I don't think they should split community between dedicated servers vs player hosted servers. That would be horrible. I think free Live is possible (still unlikely) BECAUSE they are trying to merge Windows 10 and Xbox as a singular gaming platform. They definitely aren't going to charge for Windows 10 multiplayer but they may make "Gold" a thing on Windows 10 if multiplayer is removed from being required by subscription.

How important will these Xbox plans be for the conference? They just have to fix the marketplace. I actually like to concept of the unified store for windows and xbox. If they can fix the 4-5 major complaints / features it is missing for gamers => then it will be OK.
HALO 5 is at is it. I don´t think they can push it anymore.

Also, I think they are going to announce the new controller when they show off the slim

Of course there's no telling what Ms will do until they actually do, but the more I think the more I think they have to make Multiplayer online free and use the Gold sub to yet again be their main diffenriator.
Maybe even (eventually) have a few tiers, but there's plenty they can do right now that could make their platform more engaging, and even help drive people to the platform (and of course, get more suvscribers as well).
What I think they should do ASAP:
- Get rid of the sub for Mp gaming on Xbox;
- Increase perceived quality and quantity of monthly games (and make sure they are all playable on xbox and the win store)
- Offer cloud streaming capabilities included in the price (and launch those rumored streaming devices that can play games streaming locally from pc/xbox or from the cloud). Not a rental system like Ps Now, just for the games you already own.
Then, they should make the sub a "All things entertainment from MS":
- Bundle Groove Music pass with live gold. Since you already get that no matter what someones who plays games is more likely to stop subscribing to spotify (but they have to improve their app here as well, currently it's quite behind)
- Have a netflix clone with the movies/tv shows on their store, a limited session available for viewing any time to subcribers.
To avoid explointing the system, they should make it so that each account can only either stream their games, or listen to music or watch a movie at once, or can only do all of that on the same device.
Then they add family plans, where you can add more accounts by less than paying another sub.
And then for the ultimate subscribe, the All Ms Store Tier:
- 60 dollar/month (or even more)
- All games from the xbox/windows store available to you download/stream at any time
- All movies/Tv shows from the Store, even the ones that are super new or just aired.
- All songs from groove, even those that aren't accessible from groove pass now available to stream or download.
- Same restrictions to avoid exploiting and similarly family plans.
Imo, they have to be agressive. Xbox Live was once the biggest reason to own an Xbox, they have to bold again for this time become desireable for both console and Pc users. It could be the perfect pitch as well, with their one store mantra, they could also have one sub to access all of what the store offers.
(I know it sounds like dreaming, but come to think of it, what better way Ms could drive users to their platforms than simply offering so much value for their money?)
