Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub [50 dead, 53 injured]

Imagine the internal conflict in conservatives as they struggle between being outraged because a Muslim was involved, while being gleeful at the thought of dozens of LGBT people dying.

You do realize outside of your liberal echo chamber bubble that you are completely wrong about the latter. Outliers do not represent the mainstream.

This is a hilarious post and a clear illustration of half the replies on GAF where the poster acts like he/she has knowledge on the subject matter even though they are just bullshitting for the sake of posting.

Get it out of your system. I've already eaten my crow on that one.

I'm guessing a single AR15 round can penetrate more than body depending on the entry and exit point.

Well, those rounds are used in much more than just the AR 15, but yes, you are correct. They do lose lethality the more objects (or in this case, horrifically, people) they go through. In a tight nightclub environment though, it's a nightmare.

I'm scared to think of the number of deaths it will take for something TO change...because nothing is going to happen because of this unfortunately.

Its only going to change when people are willing to put everything on the line to fight for a massive change, under our current political system it will never change.

Maybe if someone livestreams a grade school auditorium massacre things might change?

I don't have that much faith in humanity anymore to believe in something like that even motivating people to give up their guns. People's own children get shot or are involved in at home shootings and the parents call it a tragedy but keep on keeping on with their guns.

Do you know how early it is for most people in the U.S right now?

Some of the earlier threads topped the front page already, but they were locked and deleted apparently. The "official" thread went up 15 minutes ago, and already has 1400 comments.

Anyway, how another site conducts it's moderation is not the topic of this thread. But I though it was interesting and fucking gross

Denmark, it concerns me because a lot of opinions bleed across the continents, and there's also a large segment of posters in this thread that are clearly not American themselves being outraged over gun laws they don't understand.

We're the one's dealing with this shit, we're the ones having to live in states that allow every tom dick and harry to carry a weapon, openly or concealed, and have an immense amount of mass shootings/suicides/accidents/fetishism and anti-gun control money changing hands in the tens of millions, corrupting an obscene amount of our politicians.

You're one of the most active posters in every gun-related thread concerning this country, and it's getting so fucking old. It's a problem, and this need to constantly pop up, playing defense is the kind of shit that allows absolutely nothing to change, and for often groups like the NRA to consolidate power, and control our politicians and certain media outlets.

We're far more on track to banning goddamn Muslims than we are to any kind of of gun control whatsoever. I wouldn't be surprised if gun laws become even more lax after this, which is just incredible to think about.

Yes it is more likely but first things first this was a homophobic attack on LGBT+ people simply for loving who they love. His motivation was seeing two men kissing. Maybe he is Muslim, maybe he is athiest, he'll maybe he's a Christian. I don't think we have solid confirmation on that bar his parents nationality. The majority of religiously motivated terrorist attacks are claimed as religiously motivated by attackers. We do not have that information yet. All we know are LGBT+ people were targeting and executed in a mass killing.
I'd like to see a statistic on the number of atheists who oppose homosexuality. I think the number would be close to 0%.

Most people I see who hate gay people tend to cite their religious beliefs, I rarely see athiests or agnostic folk dislike LGBT. And when most of Republicans have a thing against LGBT, they always cite their religious beliefs when defending themselves.

So that either makes this guy religious, or a Republican. It's still infuriating that such hate over personal expression exists.

So it's very possible he was just a guy who hated gay people and that this is unrelated to terrorist groups... okay.

Not necessarily unrelated to radical Islam though, there are a decent amount of Islamic based/middle eastern countries where the death penalty is the punishment for being gay, this is not uncommon for radicals to share this belief.

Can we talk about homophobia instead of gun laws?

How about we talk about his motivations a bit considering fifty fucking people died and I'm angry and afraid and holy fucking shit I thought we finally got past this kind of shit happened.

I thought the US had finally at least gotten to the point where I didn't have to worry about being fucking killed for being gay. It had taken a long fucking time but I thought we'd at least gotten THAT far.

Terrifying.

we don't really know much about his motivations other than the father saying that the guy was "disgusted" by a guy caouple sometimes before the mass shooting

also, there's no really much to discuss about homofobia..go to an homofobic guy and ask him why he thinks like that and he wil not be able to tell you why..he will either just say it's "wrong" or "gross" or will just say something religion-related like "it's against nature" or " real family is between a woman and a man",without being able to further elaborate

it's one of those things that can only change with times ,with the culture and its teachings changing along with them

no matter how much you condamn it,it's an impossible to eradicate weed when it's already planted

Didn't the Sandy Hook guy waste a bunch of kindergarten kids?

20 children.

Gun culture in America will never disappear. There will always be scapegoats and fear mongering.

The best way to avoid it is to get the fuck out of the country to somewhere that isn't going to risk having you killed every time you go outside.

And now don't forget the posters telling you to stop derailing the thread with your corrections

you mean - amend it?

I have no idea why people are so keen on entrenching certain aspects of the constitution when it has already been amended. It should be a fluid document to reflect societies needs.

yep! even ignoring the racist origins of the 2nd amendment the only guns available to the founding fathers were absolute shit. it serves to highlight the danger of legislating to a technology rather than a principle.

also remember that the founding fathers were shitty old racists who wouldn't want half this country to exist anyway so fuck what they think.

Dont be a dick. I corrected him, but it is perfectly reasonable to assume "AR" stands for assault rifle.

Armalite's acronym should be "AL" lol. AL 15 would be a great rebrand if it wasnt 50 years too late.

So it's very possible he was just a guy who hated gay people and that this is unrelated to terrorist groups... okay.

Yep. I mean clearly since his name is Omar Mateen he must be a radicalized Islamist terrorist.

I am sure that makes sense to your prejudices/stereotyping/bigotry whatever.

Also when was it determined that Omar is gay? I know it said he had a wife and young son, I didnt read anything that he might be a closeted homosexual. What the father has said implies is that he is a bigot and does not like homosexuals (similar to your belief that if this man is Muslim and committed a crime it must be he is a terrorist).

RIP to the victims. This is senseless, stupid, horrific. I pray for complete physical and emotional healing for the survivors.

Now repeal the second amendment. Confiscate all guns.

What's the point? That wouldn't solve anything.

We need to ban gun politics from these threads, too. Both sides of the argument. It's just redundant, will never reach any conclusion, and will derail every thread about casualty events every time, which is bad for the discourse of the thread and it becomes outright disrespectful when posters are flinging shit at each other over gun legislation.

And then what's next? We ban hate crime and religion discussion from these threads? Where do you draw the line? Should the discussion only be about the death count and who died in these threads or should we have separate threads for death counts? Just ignore the discussions you don't like and talk about what you want to talk about.

There are lots of muslims that are fine with gay people.

There are lots of muslims that are against homosexuality but are not going to murder 50+ people.
That is true but .....
It was in response to someone supporting the idea that religion did not play a role in Siddiques actions. So I am 100% certain that if Sidiqque did not believe he would would be devinely rewarded he would not have commited this act.

I don't know man, I feel like most anti-gay bigotry is rooted in archaic religious prejudices. Violence on this scale screams "religious fanaticism" to me.

Yeah...fuck this guy.
I'm not saying it wasn't, I'm saying there is a fair chance it was simply a guy who hated LGBT+ people and not a person who was radicalised in the name of their religion. I have huge problems with organised religions as I am an LGBT+ person myself. I do see where you and others are coming from but I have a problem with it being attributed to radicalised religion as opposed to simply homophobia. The two can go hand in hand but as I said earlier most radicalised forms of terrorism are claimed as such and I will wait until that happens until believing this was anything more than a sick bastard that wanted to murder people like me for who we are and who we love.

Proof of American exceptionalism.

We did it America! 50 dead in one mass shooting. Here's to doing nothing, and see you when we hit the big 100.

Think for a minute. Do you seriously think a republican politician from Texas supports a muslim terrorist killing americans?

Jesus, people.

Uhh, yes? Republicans dog whistle comments like that in regards to LGBT all the time. He didn't directly state it of course so he can weasel out that we misinterpreted him, like they always do.

So his son saw two men kissing and then lost his shit? im not inclined to believe this is the whole story.

Well, to be fair it's just a single observation from the dad. No way he knew everything that was going on with his kid. He's probably as shocked as everyone else at this point.

Managed to not get on the internet this morning and just happened to hear the news report on the car radio. When the reporter said 50 people were killed, I genuinely thought he read the report wrong.

Unfortunately, I guess he didn't.

This is horrible... A shooting of this size should almost certainly lead to a reform of some kind. Unfortunately, however, I don't see that happening, even if other terrorist attacks of equal/lesser sizes led to reform regarding whatever was used to carry out those attacks.

Just like there isn't a point to trying to understand and figure out racism right?

Same fucking thing.

Just saw some of the final texts of a victim to his mother, not going to post them but it's a good way to show those who look at the number "50" as a statistic rather than 50 human lives lost. Utterly heartbreaking.
