Unfortunately with how HIV works, it should not. HIV has a window period where you can be infectious still, but it is unable to be found in a test. They have gotten a lot better at the testing, so the window period has shrunk, but it still exists. Once they get it down to nothing, if it is at all possible, they will remove the ban altogether. Hopefully it is sooner rather than later because some types of blood are hard to keep in stock and the gay community are great people who would probably donate a lot of blood.

straight people get HIV, too

I always find it fascinating when a horrible event takes place that people still post stuff on social media like nothing happened (5 minutes ago in my newsfeed):

I mean, you posted about the weather and Nintendo since the shooting.

This is sad to hear, but I'm never surprised anymore. The USA will live and die on the hill that is reckless gun ownership for as long as I am alive.

RIP for the dead. Prayers for the families and the wounded. And may everyone brace their conscience for the immediate mass media shitstorm, as well as the inevitable failure to take positive action.

The shooters deserve the blame, not guns. How do you think this guy was stopped from killing more people? With guns, that's how.

We need to focus more on my he type of people doing the shootings and less on the tools they use, because you will never get hundreds of millions of guns back in the bottle.

I don't even know what to say, this just.... tragic. Hope the ones still alive can make out physically and mentally.

I don't know any of this will change in the short term for America... :(

Why are young men in the west radicalizing?

What's the appeal? It seems western comforts are not as satisfying.

I remember reading about this going on in the UK but it's spreading.

This is the worst part. This guy was apparently being watched in past years but they didn't have enough to do anything about it.

I think we're going to have to end up authorizing continuous, warrantless surveillance of people who end up on these lists.

I just don't even know what you do otherwise. What sets off the trigger to do something like this? You have to continuously monitor these people who are at risk of radicalizing.

No. It kinda isn't.

I may be speaking as a straight person, but as someone in his mid-30s, I can tell you that the attitude towards the LGBT community has changed drastically in the last 20 years. Homosexuality was still shocking, taboo, vile, and an easy punchline back in the '90s. Nowadays? The premier of Ontario is a completely open lesbian who won a solid majority government. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 US states. Pride Week in my city is a celebrated source of civic pride, rather than something swept under the rug. LGBT people have a growing and honest role in popular culture. People are explicitly aware of the gay rights discussion, whether they agree with it or not.

Yes. There's still a disgusting amount of hate and discrimination out there, but to say no progress is being made? Although I'm an outsider, I can't agree with that.

I find a little disturbing how some people (not here) are more worried about people generalizing Islam instead of the victims and homophobia.

While grief towards the victims is important, the fear of generalizing Islam is one of fearing an increase in acts of violence to potential innocent victims. Its fine to express that concern, i'd say. At least its very far from disturbing. Also, we process events and prioritize things differently.

This was posted fucking 43 minutes ago. I woke up and, as usual, checked reddit. I had no idea this had even happened. I guess 10 hours after is acceptable on one of the most visited websites in the world.

Several threads were made on r/news but all of them got taken down. It's not even on reddit's front page so some kind of mess is going on.

Dozens of children were slaughtered while at school, and that didn't change our gun laws.

Unfortunately, fifty people getting massacred in a club isn't going to change them either.

Women are capable of plenty of insane, violent acts; social norms just make it less likely they'll carry one out on this scale. Men aren't to blame, masculinity and "machismo" are.

That's what I was getting at with my post, though (why I said "not the women are inferior part").

Horrible tragedy.. Insane one person could do so much damage.

I'm on my way to celebrate my daughter's 8th birthday right now..

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims ands their families.

RIP

Just woke up to this news. Horrifying.

One gunman killed 50? Fuck assault rifles man. Seriously.

R.I.P. to the victims. Don't know what else to say.

So what? I really think you are reading too much in here. Unless people are personally involved, they tend to carry on about their lives as if nothing happened. If we did not, well we would probably all be severly depressed. I really do not mean to sound insensitive. Please tell me if I do and then I will retract my statement. I just dont believe you can fault people like the person on your newsfeed.

You do not sound insensitive.

I am in Canada @ work.
All I can do is donate some money and check this thread.
It was a strange strange post by ElectricBlanketFire

Apparently I should close my shop, go home and cry in the dark.

This is awful. I'm Canadian, but my in-laws have a vacation home in Port St. Lucie so this hits home.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone involved.

This is being investigated as a "domestic terrorism" event.

And, no, being Muslim is NOT the only qualification. For example, the shooting at the black Charleston church by a white supremacist is also classified as a "domestic terrorism" event.

Nidal Hasan, a Muslim, killed 13 people, and injured 30 others while shouting "Allahu Akbar" and his attack was classified as workplace violence rather than a terrorist attack.

I find a little disturbing how some people (not here) are more worried about people generalizing Islam instead of the victims and homophobia.

That's because people like Trump are going to use the Islamic angle for fear mongering. Islamophobia and homophobia are obviously both bad things. You don't have to pick one or the other to be worried about.

Umm the police would always have guns.

I hope this doesn't mean they still aren't making sure the blood is safe to donate.

Like Im pretty sure I'd be banned under regular regulations because i visit my home country every 1-2 years, and the country (particularly the city) is under a blacklist of blood donation due to diseases present down there

All blood is screened and tested anyway. It says so right in the statement.

I really dont give a fuck what group this loser associated with. The media wants you to have someone to point the finger to and blame. Sure, hes an ISIS crazy fuck, sure, what ever. Doesnt matter.

What matters is there is a fucking problem with guns in this country. Dont let the media distract you into thinking this wouldve never happened if ISIS wasnt around.

No. These fucking shootings happen all the fucking time. Theyve happened before ISIS, they will happen after ISIS. The only thing that changes this is the gun laws.

This shit enrages me more than anything. There is no reason to let people get guns that can mass murder an entire building of people.

This is very sad. I was hoping that after the San Bernanido shootings that we would not see an incident of a similar nature. I think Paris or Mumbai style attacks should be everyone's worst nightmare. In the States its only compounded by the fact that guns are so easy to own.

RIP to the victims and I hope in the future, at the very least people on terror lists find it harder to obtain guns.

There is a big difference between supporting bigoted laws over bathroom rights and celebrating the death of citizens. He may be a piece of shit but you are going too far in interpreting this clearly scheduled tweet as an endorsement of killing homosexuals.

I just want to say too that Muslim-Americans should not be blamed or targeted for this horrible man's actions. Remember that we are also in the middle of Ramadan and I'm sure they are just as horrified as we are in the LGBT community.

Why are young men in the west radicalizing?

What's the appeal? It seems western comforts are not as satisfying.

I remember reading about this going on in the UK but it's spreading.

The biggest problem in the UK is we let crazy Muslim preachers spew out disgusting hate speech. They then use people that are down on life or have a mental illness to get over their sick beliefs.

straight people get HIV, too

Yeah definitely, but the %'s are way down in comparison. There is always risk in getting a blood transfusion. They are just trying to reduce the risk as much as possible. The prior lifetime ban was ridiculous, 1 year is even too much imo, but they are just trying to make it as safe as they possibly can.

No, I understand but it shouldn't be the priority. Homophia and transphobia are huge problems and are also present in the Islamic community, nodoby is above that.

Yeah definitely, but the %'s are way down in comparison.

nope

I really wish I didn't share the same first name as the terrorist scumbag...

Such a tragedy. I don't even know what to say. RIP to those 50 people. They did not deserve this

how much do you weigh?

105 lbs on a good day (I've always had an insanely tiny appetite). I also bike to work and walk just about everywhere, so I pretty much burn calories right as I put them on. Tried donating in college once, they told me I needed to weigh 120. I've weighed the same since 9th grade of High School, which was 11 years ago.

That's what I was getting at with my post, though (why I said "not the women are inferior part").

Ah, sorry. I was agreeing with you.

Although, I don't think the guy "has a point" at all. That original post was an awful generalization that ignores millions of good men and shitty women. Being an asshole isn't exclusive to one gender, just ask a woman if she thinks that all women are morally superior to men. haha

Because the bible. I wish I knew.

I definitely don't want to derail this into a discussion about religion when the wound is still fresh, but even if religions believe we're sinners, and that we will pay for it our the afterlives- doesn't that mean they can just happily let us sail off to our eternal punishment? It's not like we're dragging anyone with us.

I mean, I'd rather everything becomes respected and loved, but we're literally not harming anyone.

Goodness, its fifty people dead and fifty more injured. A single person doing something like this to a community that just wants to be accepted is so dreadful.

I wish there was a way I could tell my younger brother entering college that he doesn't have to blindly accept all the practices of Republicans without him getting upset and shutting me out. But yet I wake up this morning, tell him another 50 killed to which he was upset, but then after I said with an assault weapon and he said "don't start."

Sigh.
