Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub [50 dead, 53 injured]

eveeyone saying ban rifles, allow handguns for home defense smh. Handguns and especially the .38 responsible for the most gun deaths by far. It's just the kind of gun deaths we don't discuss on GAF. If any gun gets banned it should be the .38 special, the last should be hunting rifles

You're right, but right now we're talking about mass shootings. Banning handguns with the American Constitution would also be next to impossible, so lets focus on what we can rationally change.

Ban on hi-cap magazines, ban AR-15 style weapons, limited/full background checks on all firearm purchases to start with. All of which is exceptionally reasonable.

I can walk across the street and buy an AR-15 or any other legal firearm without a single background check.

Yep. I was astonished when I worked for a pawn shop that the 3-day waiting period was only for handguns. We still did the NICs call for rifles, but the response was immediate or NR in which we just handed the gun over.

Thankfully in the 3 years I worked there, there was only one (non-fatal) injury with anything we sold. (Which was indirect, the gun had been sold over to someone else). A round exploded in a chamber without exiting the gun.

The difference is that in all of those instances, you are granting rights to people and increasing liberty. Amending the 2nd amendment only means stripping away rights, and that is a touchy subject.

Imagine if you were to advocate an amendment that would remove people's right to vote, that would cause controversy.

How about my right to not get shot just for stepping out my door for a pizza or to go to a movie or a night club?

Come on GAF. No matter what Islamic scripture may say, no one is going to go and murder or beat people unless they are fucked up. It's similar to playing GTA and assuming since you kill and steal cars that you will do it in real life too. You won't if you are right in the head

The bible says terrible things but all Christians aren't evil.

I'm not a fan of religion but how is saying all Muslims this or that acceptable? It's not.

For all accounts he wasn't even religious so people are just focusing on that instead of facing the real issues. I guess saying "Muslims are evil" is just easier.

People blaming Muslims, defending guns like they are so important to having freedom. This thread is making me mad.

50 people died because an awful man got easy access to guns but people prefer to blame him based on his ethnicity instead of facing the real issues at hand.

Homophobia is terrible, islamophobia is terrible. Hate in general isn't good.
You must be reading a different thread than me.

There is absolutely no reason to think an attack like this (Islamist terrorism) would be curtailed if we had more strict gun laws. The attacks in Europe should make this evident. The biggest issue BY FAR is Islamism.

If you have strict laws then you have more opportunities to stop acts like these. This person wasn't a criminal until the moment he opened fire. If he had violated gun laws then there would be a chance to stop him before. There would also be an opportunity to find and punish the people who he got the regulated guns from, which would help find others before they commit atrocities. This is how law enforcement works.

All of that is difficult, yes, but it's possible. Prosecuting someone based on what invisible people they believe in is not possible.

If you are going to compare America to Europe then you are going to need to factor in the rate of mass shootings in each, yes? By your logic Europe should have more mass shootings.

A violent asshole finds an ideology and methodology to focus his rage through, as well as find an excuse to act on his violent homophobia, and is able to legally purchase the tools to do so with no resistance despite being on a watchlist.

Its just... all of the above, man.
Well, yeah you are right, but I don't think you can regulate extremist thoughts of any religion.

So what? He's American
I'm sure his parents didn't at all influence him in any way what so ever.

Not saying his parents are would be terrorists, but there's statistically a good chance that his parents are against gays and are devout Muslims.

But what exactly is this FBI list this guy was on? Nobody is really expanding on this part. He was on some terrorist list, yet he was still allowed to own guns? Something isn't adding up...

Didn't know there was so much hatred on GAF. Very saddening.

I'm sure his parents didn't at all influence him in any way what so ever.

Not saying his parents are would be terrorists, but there's statistically a good chance that his parents are against gays and are devout Muslims.
FUCK OFF. There are millions of Muslim-Americans, including many on GAF, and they don't kill anyone, let alone 50 people.

HE IS AMERICAN. BORN IN AMERICA. AND HE BOUGHT THOSE GUNS LEGALLY. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE HIS PARENTS WERE FROM.

a) You just moved the goal posts from such laws wouldn't have done anything to stop this to such laws would be wrong.

b) Then fucking amend the constitution already.

No, I was simply responding to your claim. It's not moving the goal posts, it's adding to my argument. Not only would changing the law not guarantee that this wouldn't happen, but actually changing the law is not necessarily the morally right thing to do. It's giving the government extra power over people based on flimsy evidence. Oh, you're on a list? You cant do X, Y, and Z. How did you get on the list? Just trust the government!

Also, we don't know how this guy got his weapons anyway. It may have not been legally.

Damn thats horrible.

How the hell did it take the police almost 4 hours to breach the club and kill the guy. Thats way too fucking long.

We need fucking gun control. This is fucking embarrassing and should have never happened. All of those poor people. My gay club nearby is pretty big and I can't even imagine what would have happened if something like this took place. Would I have hid? Would I have died? I'm just so mad for all these people that lost their lives. This should not have happened.

I'm not sure why people are hellbent on making this only about guns.
Yes, the US gun laws are crazy.
Guns are an instrument that make murder, particularly mass murder, much easier than it should ever be.
The hijackers on 9/11 were armed with boxcutters. Ignoring the role Islam is playing in fostering intolerance and spreading world wide terrorism because it challenges current 'progressive' mantras is also crazy.

I suppose it's easier to jump behind
#notallmuslims
or
#notallgunowners
than it is to actually challenge beliefs and look for meaningful solutions.

How does one look for meaningful solutions when one side is in the pockets of gun manufacturers, and their mouthpieces, and will not allow anything to be done whatsoever, other than MORE GUNS. You can have the majority of Americans in favor of something getting done, and the corruptions still reigns supreme.

Also, what exactly are you proposing to be done about a religion?

I just wanted to remind everyone, to keep a cool head in this discussion. Let us not post to harshly with our emotions. If need be, take a minute before responding.

Let us hope for the families of lost ones that they stay strong. Rip to the fallen.

The 2nd amendment is not absolute. We can very easily put forward legislation that would ban hi-cap mag's, certain weapons, etc. without violating the 2nd amendment.

No it is easier to solve that portion of the equation.

We could just as easily limit the extent of Due Process protections due to people who are placed on well documented and supported terrorist watch lists.

Jesus fucking Christ. Rest in peace to those who were killed, and I hope the injured recover without issue.

It is so damn infuriating to keep seeing these killings happen time and time again.

How about my right to not get shot just for stepping out my door for a pizza or to go to a movie or a night club?

I'm in the military, been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan during 08 and 12 and I'm more scared that I'll get shot by some crazy person with a gun in the states.

The Bible is riddled with nasty calls to violence and justifications of mass murder. We just don't pick those verses out because we breathe "Judeo-Christian"* air. Islamophobia is idiotic; the reason there are violent Islamists in the world are the same old reasons there are violent people anywhere -- poverty and famine, colonialism, war, and lack of education. We count ourselves "civilized" because we don't experience these things. There is nothing inherently violent in Islam.

This is the same dumbfuck argument Trump is using on the judge in his fraud case. It's a racist and white supremacist notion.

As a gay person I dislike ALL religions. What else can you expect when gays are seen as sinners. How can anything good come out of that?
I wish I could still believe in your view but this is a brutal wakeup call. I'm pretty shook up.

But what exactly is this FBI list this guy was on? Nobody is really expanding on this part. He was on some terrorist list, yet he was still allowed to own guns? Something isn't adding up...
It's not illegal to think a certain way thankfully.

You can't discriminate against people based on what they might do.

Buddy as an exmuslim and a critic of Islam . Don't confuse Islam with Muslims . I just want people to be clear. Yes there is obvious problem with Islamic scripture and ideology. But, Muslims live not in one big broad ideology.

The best course is to challenge scripture and educate. Hating leads to bigotry which is exatly what we need to fight

Radical imams are a real problem, from what I understand. They'll come in from overseas, and actively subvert a community, radicalizing youth that they recognize as emotionally vulnerable. Then those youth go on to radicalize other youth.

Sad to say, I'm starting to "hate" too.

Hate Christians, hate Muslims, hate homophobes, hate racists, hate anyone whose belief in dumb fairy tales, stupid ideologies and imaginary beings causes them to be a threat to other human beings. And I do mean hate. I can no longer imagine empathy for their dead bodies whether man woman or child. That is hate.

I'm tired of their dangerous delusions and I'm ashamed to have been raised in a "book" religion myself before coming to my senses. All of the architects of the homophobic order are responsible for this, not just the foot soldiers. Fuck guns. It's the people and the society. Nobody praises the pen for Shakespeare's Macbeth or the chisel for Michelangelo's David. Blaming the gun is a copout.

I'm not trying to troll, and I suppose I will calm down a little but I'm more angry than sad to have awoken to this. My mind's eye is conjuring up cheerful images of a razed church or mosque. I tell it not to be silly, but it is a seductive image. How many are as mad as I am but will not be able to restrain themselves? Rights have always been ransomed with blood.

R.I.P

This is an example of how not to react.

Take it easy and think about how you're equating yourself to the groups you're claiming hatred for.

Don't dodge the question. I asked you if it was okay to discriminate against Muslims. I didn't use the word scrutinize.

Legally? No. I don't think there should be any law specific for Islam.

Personally and socially? Yes. 100%. They are no better than Christian, Jews, Mormans etc. In my eyes. People under such delusion they're a threat to themselves and society at large.

Did he even have condolences for those who died? What a piece of trash he is. I don't know how someone can vote for him.
He did, but he ended it with "when will we be tough and vigilant again?"

When people are emotional, people say things they normally wouldn't.
Im still disgusted that those thoughts exist in the first place for so many people here. Being upset doesn't suddenly create hateful ignorance, it exposes it.

You must be reading a different thread than me.

You are part of the problem. Talking about scriptures like that means Muslims are more hateful or worse than other people.

Go analyse the bible while you are at it too. Or see how many Christians are also wife beaters.

You are perpetrating this.

Thankfully! I live in the great state of Texas, I don't have to wait at all. If I wanted to I could legally purchase a gun right now, this moment, without a background check or waiting period. Gun laws are too strict, fuck you Obama!

Honestly, I don't think people truly get it. They think there is a background check, waiting period, etc. in many states there aren't.

Quoting scripture is ridiculous, you can find equally hateful speech in the the old and new testaments.

Islam in not the enemy anymore than Christianity is, but the extremists from both sides who pick and choose the hateful context without understanding, or more likely, willfully ignoring its peaceful teachings.

The Bible is riddled with nasty calls to violence and justifications of mass murder. We just don't pick those verses out because we breathe "Judeo-Christian"* air. There is no comparison of Christianity and Islam when it comes to scriptures. Not by content but the authority of the content . Quran is definite unadulterated word of God that can't be question in any way or shape. If you don't realize it you then have no idea of a difference of impact

I'm sure his parents didn't at all influence him in any way what so ever.

Not saying his parents are would be terrorists, but there's statistically a good chance that his parents are against gays and are devout Muslims.

There is also a chance they didn't. This post is kind of disgusting.

I feel you. The kind of post I usually write and delete.

Let's be real though, as gun owners we have to admit to the capability, the power, of the weapons we own, especially an AR 15.

Could he have made a bomb? Sure. But ultimately a high capacity weapon, even semi-auto, is the most straightforward way of killing a bunch of people especially in a tight setting.

We can't just knee-jerk get defensive of our weapons (and ya, I like my AR 15 a lot), we have to be willing to work with reformers on reasonable regulation. In the end, it'll be good for us. Responsible gun owners should be what people think of when they think AR 15, or we are screwed long term.

Seriously. I for one am tired of the "semantics" argument when that's all we've ever been subjected to when they ban PARTS instead of guns. I also thing we need stricter regulations -- I only own a handgun for personal defense, but I take it out twice a month to make sure I can still use it well. Most gun owners agree on most reasonable changes to gun law, but what I think the problem is, is that people get it in their heads that every part of a gun is dangerous. So now barrel shrouds, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, and suppressors are banned.

the result is that we're banning things based on how they look, not their function, which serves precisely zero purpose.

Add onto the very real and very loud "background checks == gun registry, gubment get out reeee" people, and it's even harder to get anything done. On one side, you have fear mongerers who won't ban anything, especially the things that act as safeguards, and on the other, you have people that want to ban things on how they look. And they'll use nothing but emotional arguments to make their cases, up to and including ad hominem attacks and shaming. then back on the other side, ad hominem attacks and shaming. And reasonable people on both sides of this argument kinda...discussing how we actually manage to provide the things that may fix the problem.
