Soooooooo is this next gen? I'm confused as to what place this supposed to occupy? Will games be sold in 2 versions, S and Scorpio; and will there be a premium for the high end version?

So many questions to this new high/low sku paradigm.

If they reneg on any of the specs there will be a shitstorm, especially if Sony somehow matches it.

Now Sony needs to figure out the right balance between an earlier launch and increased power. Holiday 2016 might not give them much time to bump the specs much, but I think if they can reach 5TF and still hit this year it'll be a win for them.

They're not launching in 2016. I don't believe there was ever a leak stating they'd be launching in 2016, and if MS' plan is to launch in late 2017 it makes sense for Sony to launch then as well and match or exceed MS' specs rather than launch earlier with a weaker box, considering that this is the premium box for people who want to spend more for more power.

Xbox Scorpio 1,5 years away. Playstation 4,5 about 4 months away. Sony cannot change specs at this time. I'm guessing Playstation 5 will be out holliday 2018 with even higher specs than the Scorpio. Console lifecycle will be alot shorter from now on I think.

yup, and on 2019, MS will have the more powerful machine and so on... say goodbye to the traditional console generation

The most amazing thing is that the Neo scared Microsoft enough to get them to pre-announce Scorpio by at least a year. There is no way Microsoft wanted to announce Scorpio today.

Phil Spencer was talking about new hardware it before Neo was mentioned at GdX

MS really does seem to have written everything off for this. It's a kind confusing message.

I'm delighted their strategy encompasses PC as a primary delivery pipeline now, and I think this box will help ensure MS content takes decent advantage of mid-to-high end PC hardware. But it makes this all the more irrelevant to me. What's the distinction for Xbox as a console now? On my (soon to be built PC) I'll have more power, access to the same VR ( if it's oculus, of course), the same MS content...

Of course, as a console, this will still be appealing in terms of value and retail accessibility, areas where PC still falls down. That can't be underestimated. But it's a little unprecedented that these are now the only points to really distinguish this box.

From their point of view, all they care about is you buying the games. The HW is a delivery platform for where the money comes from. Don't want the console, but want the games on PC? They don't care, they get the money.

MS is saying here are console options and you can buy our games here. If you want PC only, you can also buy our games here. They get paid either way.

I thought the same thing, and after the leaks I hoped MS wouldn't mention Scorpio at all. But now I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that MS has conceded this gen to Sony. They are positioning themselves to launch a new, much stronger box in 2017.

And believe this, Xbox One games will be compatible on Scorpio but no way the reverse will be true. Perhaps at the beginning of the life cycle of Scorpio but not the entirety of it.
Games will be compatible in the way that Battlefield 4 was on PS3/360. Technically, it was the same game as Xbone/PS4, but it was a crap version in comparison.

want a gaming PC? Buy our games on the Win 10 store. Prefer to buy a $400 box from Best Buy to play games on? Get Scorpio. Think you might eventually buy a PC down the road? Well all your Xbox first party games will be sitting there waiting for you in the W10 store.

At least you answered your own question. Those have always been the selling points for consoles. The PC is the bleeding edge. The console is plug & play.

According to who?

PS4K is not coming until 2017.

Is this the first console announcement where they didn't show a console, no price and made specific mention that it would never have any exclusive games?

Some people and their wishful thinking that Sony will react to that... changing specs etc takes months etc to test out...

Yours and everyone else's assumption is that Sony hasn't already taken Scorpio into consideration and is going full steam ahead with what we already know. Devs had PS4 devkits with 4GB of DDR3 RAM before an 11th hour change put it at 8GB of DDR5. We don't know what Sony is doing or thinking and that's what makes this whole thing exciting and mystical.

Lol. Seriously though, what a pointless announcement. How the hell is anyone suppose to be excited for the Xbox One right now when you just revealed basically everything is on PC and you have Scorpio coming? Even if Neo releases at the time rumors state, the specs are irrelevant since the already leading console by a large margin will have the upgraded brother console out for more than a year before Scorpio hits the shelves.
Games?

Isn't that the most important thing here?

I think Microsoft announced it now because they want to start a new gen even though they say nobody gets left behind and to see if they can make Sony wobble because if Neo isn't comparable, Sony holds back the Scorpio with PS4 and Neo but if Sony look to match Scorpio, it would result in the PS4 generation being pushed aside quicker giving Microsoft a better chance of competing on new ground. Microsoft are baiting Sony to finish this gen early.

Yeah, that's a good read on their strategy.

It doesn't matter; specs in a close environment can produce so much more than PC;

So, expect exclusive games on Scorpio to look better than PC games at max settings.
So you mean no games will look better on Scorpio because it won't have any exclusives, right? Your post was actually clever instead of crazy.

I wonder how this will stack up against PC price wise in holiday 2017. I bet this will perform similarly to a 1070.

Weren't you the one that called out Arthur Gies for lying about the 6tf rumour? Hopefully you enjoyed the crow!!!

I never said he lied...

I as well as many others on here who know his history, were skeptical because the report said 5 to 6, and he just jumped to the 6.

And this is not even a thing yet regardless, lol.

Good on them if they reach the 6TF at an attractive price.

I'd hope they have an option to run at 1080p/60 instead of higher res/unlocked framerate. I mean, how many people even own 4k tv's?

4K is much more impressive than 108060.

Also, after last Black Friday and Christmas, tons of people have 4KTVs.

After this Black Friday and Christmas, the numbers will be even higher.

Next Black Friday and Christmas, people will be buying 4K TVs for cheap to go along with their new XBOX Scorpio and Playstation Neos.

It feels a bit like they are trying to throw a wet blanket on console sales (mostly to slow down Sony) until the Scorpio launches with the hopes to turn things around.
I just can't understand their Announcement structure.
Why the f would you announce a first (Upgraded?) Slim at the same time of announcing Next Gen Console.
Let's not beat around the bush, that's what's they've done,lol.
Sales would pretty much systematically stop (slow right down) and pre-orders for Scorpio would start (hopefully).

A huge rift,
I mean, think of it this way. Me. A person who follows alot (majority of Consoles and Games), and was contemplating of going to get a XboxOne once i saw the Forza Game (because Australia, lol) only to rethink my step and think well, maybe i should just get this Upgraded Slim of XboxOne with the S....
Only to be thrown back even further now because f it. I might as well wait for Scorpio.
*scratches head*

And that's not even thinking on whether it'd be a smart investment and/or waiting for the competitors.

Thrown a spanner in the works imo.

For people who don't game on PC, which is a huge amount of people? Are people really this dense?

Can someone put this into a PC context. What are we looking at here, mid-tier rig or a near high end PC?
By the time of its release it will be mid range.

Going by comparisons against AMD GPUs with that kind of HW potential, a GTX 1080 (just released) should be roughly twice as fast. By the time it's out there will probably be a single-GPU high-end solution which is around 3 times as fast.

Wait so lemme get this straight...you can buy the XB1 games (etc) on the W10 store...and play them there independently of owning an XB1? That seems neat but weird
