Wish the xbone launched with gaming in mind first. I like they're trying to get back to their roots and that BC is a top priority (wake up Sony) but I can't help but think a pc is still a better choice than Scorpio

That's what I am thinking as well. The Scorpio sounds brilliant, but MS didn't show one Xbox exclusive (unless I missed it). I still am tempted to buy one though.

I think it was Digital Foundry that said it was 4.4TF because it was downclocked. Beef up the cooling or chassis design and they may be able to up the clocks.

And the way MS worded "6 TF GPU" makes me think the system might not actually be at 6 TF even if it's capable, but holy crap a long wait to go and that tease...

So Scorpio won't have exclusive games? I guess that answers the question of how this is doing 4K but I think they need to leave XB1 behind.

I'm inclined to agree. This console generation hasn't worked out for them. Fuck it, start a new one. Have backwards compatability by all means but let the Scorpio be its own product.

I know, right ;P

Well done. What goes around, comes around.

Why is Nintendo so awkwardly caught in the middle of these cycles? How can they relatively compete?
I find it hilarious. :lol :lol :lol

But they work directly with developers, they probably knew Scorpio and Neo were coming. I just don't think they are interested in this competition of cores and flops.

I may finally buy a Xbox.

There's some denial in here about how weak the neo is. Reminds me of the good ole days when people would shout "but the dgpu!" Now it's "but the specs aren't final!"

Crazy days

So I've done my own research on Scorpio and found the following detailed breakdown:

Strengths: Resourceful, brave, passionate, stubborn, a true friend
Weaknesses: Distrusting, jealous, secretive, violent
Scorpio likes: Truth, facts, being right, longtime friends, teasing, a grand passion
Scorpio dislikes: Dishonesty, revealing secrets, passive people

Note: See? Truthfacts.

Also leads me to believe Scorpio will release somewhere between October 23rd and November 21st.

And some hints and anecdotes that may shed some light on the project:

Once Scorpios fall in love, they are very dedicated and faithful. However, they enter into a relationship very carefully, because sometimes they need a lot of time to build trust and respect for partners.
This explains the early announcement and the long wait.

Scorpios are disciplined enough to stick to the budget, but they are also not afraid of hard work to bring themselves in a better financial position. However, they are not inclined to spend much. Money means security and a sense of control for them, which means that they are good at saving money and make decisions carefully before investing in something.
Its gonna be cheaper than we think!

Scorpio men are tedious, confident, intense, sexual and very competitive. Some of the negative Scorpio traits is the fact that they are highly obsessive, compulsive and jealous people. In order to seduce the Scorpio man, you will have to make sure to keep an air of mystery around you. Games are something that appeal to men born under the Scorpio astrology sign, which means that you will have to work to keep them interested.
They certainly know their audience.

Dating with a Scorpio woman can be really entertaining, but do not let her wild side fool you into thinking that she will be an easy conquest. Don't expect a sexual encounter with the Scorpio woman on the first date.
Earning her love requires a lot of time and patience, but once she falls in love, she will give everything to the relationship. The woman born under the Scorpio zodiac sign can be very possessive but also completely devoted partners. Be honest and avoid getting into arguments with her, because she is not the type to forgive and forget easily.
Mass Effect Andromeda is the killer Scorpio app, confirmed.

Also please don't compare theoretical performance based on Nvidia cards having about the same Tflops as they will use AMD and AMD often has higher Tflops for same in-game performance in most games.

1070 has both higher Tflops and is Nvidia and remember it's over a year until the release so it will probably not be cutting-edge for that time it will probably reflect the current mid-range from AMD, maybe even the 580 from AMD for $200 again.

If Scorpio doesn't have any exclusive games, then I don't see much reason to jump on at launch.

Will be interesting if they will actually make 4k gaming happen, because I'm very skeptical of them being able to pull it off effectively enough.

Major Nelson, the gift that keeps on giving.

FYI, the Xbox One Scorpio won't cost a penny more than $399 when it's released next fall. Both Microsoft and Sony learned the hard way the folly of releasing $500 hardware. They won't make that mistake again.

Erm, both Polaris and Zen are known qualities at this point.

4.2tf is for one configuration of the chip. When you do r&d you always have different configurations spec wise and gauge it.

I mean 4.2tf could be final. But I have to believe Scorpio leaks and specs could of had them go with Zen instead of Jaguar.

Wow, looks like PS4K will be a stillbirth. Shocking that Sony let Microsoft beat them in hardware spec.

Neo is shipping much earlier, Scorpio next year, 18 months is a long time to prepare for a new machine, you can get cheaper parts etc...

if PS4K is launching next year, I bet it will more or less have the same specs

MS really does seem to have written everything off for this. It's a kind confusing message.

I'm delighted their strategy encompasses PC as a primary delivery pipeline now, and I think this box will help ensure MS content takes decent advantage of mid-to-high end PC hardware. But it makes this all the more irrelevant to me. What's the distinction for Xbox as a console now? On my (soon to be built PC) I'll have more power, access to the same VR ( if it's oculus, of course), the same MS content... The prospect of scorpio's power doesn't seem exciting next to what is buildable today for access to the same games.

Of course, as a console, this will still be appealing in terms of value and retail accessibility, areas where PC still falls down. That can't be underestimated. But it's a little unprecedented that these are now the only points to really distinguish this box.

There are twelve memory modules in that image. Might not mean anything this far from release though.
12 would be ineresting. Might mean either going for GDDR5 (no X) and a 384 bit bus (unlikely) or GDDR5X clocked faster than what we've seen so far on a 192 bit bus. Latter would probably have nice pricing advantages, if it's possible.

Or it's just a marketing image and it will be a 256 bit bus.

I think Microsoft announced it now because they want to start a new gen even though they say nobody gets left behind and to see if they can make Sony wobble because if Neo isn't comparable, Sony holds back the Scorpio with PS4 and Neo but if Sony look to match Scorpio, it would result in the PS4 generation being pushed aside quicker giving Microsoft a better chance of competing on new ground. Microsoft are baiting Sony to finish this gen early.

So Scorpio won't have exclusive games? I guess that answers the question of how this is doing 4K but I think they need to leave XB1 behind.

not look like there will be exclusive gen games, all games will just scale backward effects to run on One I'm sure just as PC games do now... why not there are options for whatever your needs are. Full res on Scorpio or reduced on One, whatever your price point desires are, again just like pc gamers now but on an easy to use console.. about time for this. Been wanting this for years

I give them a ton of credit for taking the risk. It may not be what the community believes in, but Microsoft is smart to embrace that technology moves at a much faster clip than the traditional console cycle can keep up with.

If the PS4k is launching this year (and everything is indicating that it will), then that's going to shoot the 360 comparison.

Honestly, the big thing with the transition to incremental platforms is that (assuming backwards compatibility holds up) people are going to be invested in ecosystems. Previously, everyone effectively lost access to old games every generation on their new boxes. Going forward, hopefully that will be a thing of the past. The big problem Microsoft faces is convincing people to abandon their PS4 game collections to cross the isle, and I suspect that's going to be a harder ask than anyone is expecting. Likewise, Sony will probably have trouble convincing people to abandon their Xbox collections. I don't see this as a knockout punch, more like cementing the current status quo.

I edited my original post.

I'm definitely interested.. Sounds like a console for the hardcore. Let's see the price, though as it's not coming out for a long long time it may be reasonable.

Do you get screwed by PC games having different video settings? Likely the games will detect the console and change the settings accordingly. I didn't think this was a new concept?

I don't know what you mean.

My point is that the Scorpio hardware is limited by the current Xbox One hardware. It can't have its potential fully tapped as long as they enforce a shared library between it and the current Xbox One hardware.

GTX 1080 > Xbox One Scorpio > PS Neo > PS4 > Xbox One

GTX1080Ti/GTX 1180 (expected in the next 1.5 years) >>> (PS4 + Xbox One)

the significant change though is that with XB1 it was beaten by low end GPUs almost immediately. Scorpio is high end GPUs now and maybe mid-range by the time it comes out. It won't be beaten by super cheap PCs nearly as quickly as XB1 was.

The Xbox platform is looking more and more attractive, it's too bad I'm already entrenched in the PS ecosystem. The One S and Scorpio sound very attractive.

Xbox Scorpio 1,5 years away. Playstation 4,5 about 4 months away. Sony cannot change specs at this time. I'm guessing Playstation 5 will be out holliday 2018 with even higher specs than the Scorpio. Console lifecycle will be alot shorter from now on I think.

Lol. Seriously though, what a pointless announcement. How the hell is anyone suppose to be excited for the Xbox One right now when you just revealed basically everything is on PC and you have Scorpio coming? Even if Neo releases at the time rumors state, the specs are irrelevant since the already leading console by a large margin will have the upgraded brother console out for more than a year before Scorpio hits the shelves.

I just noticed that with this announcement, Xbox One sales are probably going to hit all new lows. Which is bad with a new model out there soon.

Do you know why this is fine?

Because the people who would have bought an Xbox but are now waiting for the Scorpio are going to start saving their money starting now...

That means more people have more time to save to buy into the scorpio for MS. A huge initial install base is probably what they are going for with giving everyone enough time to prepare.
