That's a big jump over the current Xbox!

I like the direction they're going, but I'll likely stick with upgrading my PC so I can get all the Xbox exclusives and have access to my Steam library.

They're not launching in 2016. I don't believe there was ever a leak stating they'd be launching in 2016, and if MS' plan is to launch in late 2017 it makes sense for Sony to launch then as well and match or exceed MS' specs rather than launch earlier with a weaker box, considering that this is the premium box for people who want to spend more for more power.

I kind of agree.

On the other hand, if Sony chooses to be aggressive, they have a great opportunity here to pull a 360 and get a year head start with a system that's hopefully close in power. That might be enough to get the core buyers on board first.

Damn. This may just turn out to be my first ever Xbox. I wonder if the next round (this vs the Neo) will put Xbox back on top.

What are the chances of Sony updating the Neo to match the Scorpio?

Depends on if they think they need to take a loss on a console when they are doing so well with the Ps4. My guess is no.

By the time of its release it will be mid range.

Going by comparisons against AMD GPUs with that kind of HW potential, a GTX 1080 (just released) should be roughly twice as fast. By the time it's out there will probably be a single-GPU high-end solution which is around 3 times as fast.
Eh... When you put it this way, I think I may just jump to PCs to get good performance now on every game than play this waiting game for iterative consoles and only get good performance for games that are designed for the increased console power in a few years.

Console gaming makes a whole lot less sense to me with this announcement.

Do you know why this is fine?

Because the people who would have bought an Xbox but are now waiting for the Scorpio are going to start saving their money starting now...

That means more people have more time to save to buy into the scorpio for MS. A huge initial install base is probably what they are going for with giving everyone enough time to prepare.

The Xbox 360 sold over 85 milion units. The Xbox One stands at 20 something. This could cannibalize the sales and make it even more underwhelming comparing to the predecessor. How is this fine?

They will probably have another revision ready by then, but I'm wondering how anyone makes the pitch to developers to start a whole new cycle if any of this nonsense takes off. Who makes games for a PS5 / Xbox (?) if the combined user base of PS4, XBox, Scorpio, and Neo is hitting the 100 million unit mark? Compatibility will not be an issue going forward, but I'm wondering who takes the plunge first to make games that will not work on the established user bases. This is some twilight zone stuff.

off topic, but i just want to tell you i love swat 4. respect.

Damn. This may just turn out to be my first ever Xbox. I wonder if the next round (this vs the Neo) will put Xbox back on top.

What are the chances of Sony updating the Neo to match the Scorpio?

Zero. Start chip design to stoe shelves takes a min of 18 months, usually much longer.

It's not pointless. I might have bought Neo this fall. Now I will seriously think about it if I can buy a much more powerful console for third party games in a year. I can wait that one year as I already own PS4 for its exclusives.

Yup. For a more powerful box, I can imagine people holding off a few months and waiting.

Price will be the determining factor. At this point that is the only thing that stands between building a 4K PC or getting a Scorpio or PS4Neo.

4.2tf is for one configuration of the chip. When you do r&d you always have different configurations spec wise and gauge it.

I mean 4.2tf could be final. But I have to believe Scorpio leaks and specs could of had them go with Zen instead of Jaguar.

Well Zen isn't some magical configuration that will impact the scenario too much. There's a reason that consoles have invested so much on gpu compute this gen. It's just more cost economic, in a certain way. Any changes assigned to the gpu component will require major engineering work. Even clocking higher can be tricky, since I'm assuming they're are choosing from lesser binned GPU prints. Otherwise, why not go full fat?

With all the games coming to windows now - there is literally no incentive to buy an Xone no matter what hardware it contains for those who have custom PCs

Ok, thread is flying. If this has been answered, I am sorry.

They talked about VR multiple times, but never said the words Oculus or Vive. Do they not have a deal in place yet? Do they have their own VR device coming?

It was just weird they talked about VR, but never said which VR or detailed any marketing deals with the VR companies.
I think they've got strong ties to oculus.

DAY 1!!
DROOLS!

So, if I don't have a 4K TV, will this be pointless?

Will devs have to make two versions, Xbox One and Scorpio, from the ground up?

If the latter, I find it hard to believe that Xbox One owners won't be "left behind".

Won't they just release the games so that they can be run in either 4k or 1080p and that will be the difference?
Would make sense from the standpoint of 4K is 4x the pixels of 1080p. And would not necessarily require a lot of manpower to port the game.

Honestly I think Microsoft is All in on a PC type of experience with gaming, and they creating a platform around that and this new xbox signifies a new model where they pretty much have upgrade cycles that may mirror Windows OS, also in doing so unifying their OS to be the end all be all for any piece of computing that they are involved in. Im curious to see if they do go with a modular upgrade path where they can upgrade mid cycle(3-4 year cycle), then a new box every full cycle(6 years) rinse and repeat.

Does the power really matter until Microsoft has a naughty dog, guerilla games, or Santa Monica studios? We don't need more PC brute force graphics we need great development teams. Which Microsoft still lacks. Forza 7 for Scorpio will probably still have baked in lighting and no dynamic day night cycle just to hit 4k60.

Just tuning in on the commute home. Is it simply 2017 or holiday 2017 (as one of the early replies said)? Guess it doesn't really matter. Both seem so far away!

From their point of view, all they care about is you buying the games. The HW is a delivery platform for where the money comes from. Don't want the console, but want the games on PC? They don't care, they get the money.

MS is saying here are console options and you can buy our games here. If you want PC only, you can also buy our games here. They get paid either way.

want a gaming PC? Buy our games on the Win 10 store. Prefer to buy a $400 box from Best Buy to play games on? Get Scorpio. Think you might eventually buy a PC down the road? Well all your Xbox first party games will be sitting there waiting for you in the W10 store.

Of course, this is the new strategy, and it's great. They'll make more money out of me this way than they ever did before ;) But it completely defuses for me 'tech porn' side of their consoles. Which I guess is just a little unexpected and sad.

I mean arguably the era of the 'superconsole' was already long over, but when the software platform basically folds into the PC too, keeping up any enthusiasm for the hardware side is harder than ever. With Xbox and Windows more or less as one now, I can only be more or less excited for this as I would be any 6tflop AMD GPU next year...which is to say, not extremely.

The most I see Sony do is matching the specs.

Not if the Neo is coming out this holiday as is the rumor. No way for them to make changes to the specs. The fact that dev kits have been out already for the Neo, making hardware changes cannot be done. Perhaps they can push the clocks, but even that at this time might not be feasible.

I think the way Phil laid it out and explained it all was really well done and I think having devs talk about stuff was smart as well. The Todd Howard comments about Fallout VR was telling.

What I want to know, are games mandated to have 4K resolution on the Scorpio? Or can they can have the best looking game possible at 1080p/1440p 60fps?

There won't be no response, because it's not needed at all. Instead go all in on VR, get everyone's hands on this tech in 4 instead of 18 months, and still sell boatloads of PS4s along the way.
It's simple.

Holy shit, someone in this thread with common sense. Everyone is seeing 6TF and losing their damn minds not realizing that power doesn't equate to an automatic win for MS and a loss for Sony. This signifies a switch to a new type of generation more akin to mobile phones and TVs.

So with Xbox basically a Windows 10 box now......have Ms talked about forwards compatibility here?

They mentioned Scorpio is backwards compatible. But will xb1 be playing all Scorpio games?

Or is this basically the PC approach.

If the latter.....then Xbox is officially not a closed box anymore, and hence not a console.

I wonder how devs feel about that? And if it not Xbox as starts going down the PC game track... unoptimized for any one tech spec...and how that will contrast with Sony's emphasis on neos closed limit on SW approach.

So I've seen games get announced with CGI trailers but I don't think I've ever seen a CGI console announcement before. That's brave, Microsoft.
