A spec list (which will probably change), talking heads speaking buzzwords, and a partial 3D animation of something that won't be out for 17 months. That's a whole lotta nothing.

If the Neo rumours are true, devkits already being sent out...what can Sony realistically do? I know they can perform last minute tweaks, but can it be as drastic to up those tflops?

The question is, will there be Scorpio exclusive games or is Scorpio high end xb1 in terms of platform.

I'd imagine that the farthest they'll go is allowing developers to have VR games/VR modes that are only for the Scorpio. Beyond that they're not going to allow developers to make games that don't support the base XBone, and more importantly it's not going to be in the interest of any developer with the budget to make a game that couldn't scale down to the XBone to actually do so, considering that the install base for this will almost certainly be lower than the install base for the base 'Bone. It's the same reason why nobody makes games that require PCs with $300+ video cards to run.

There's some denial in here about how weak the neo is. Reminds me of the good ole days when people would shout "but the dgpu!" Now it's "but the specs aren't final!"

Crazy days
The specs aren't final though?

I thought all the rumors have Neo at significantly weaker 4.4 or slightly weaker 5.5 depending on what price Sony is targeting? Regardless, we don't know the specs, even what Phil said can be changed, it's friggin June 2016.

I don't know what you mean.

My point is that the Scorpio hardware is limited by the current Xbox One hardware. It can't have its potential fully tapped as long as they enforce a shared library between it and the current Xbox One hardware.

I'm OK with that. It's no generational leap anyway and the new resources can be used to increase framerate and fidelity. No more lowering resolution or sacrificing framerate (if they also stick with an equivalent of a 'Neo mode').

I'm more concerned regarding the quality of the games on the old hardware.

I'm sure there's a market for this machine, but I have a lot of difficulty understanding how the Scorpio makes sense for a "hardcore" gamer. If most Xbox games will be available on PC from now on, and if MS is going to be frequently updating Xbox hardware, why should a gamer invest in the Xbox console ecosystem? Wouldn't it make sense to just invest into a PC? That way you have access to way more games and additional storefronts (Steam, GOG, etc.). You can also choose to use KB/M or Controller.

Where does Scorpio fit in for the enthusiast gamer? I'm not a fan of the way Sony is moving to a hardware refresh model either, but they seem to be keeping a lot of exclusives tied to the PlayStation platform, so as an enthusiast, I'm forced to buy a PlayStation to play those games.

sounds like nothing more than cash grab desperation and all but admittance that the xbone is relatively under performing

ill just buy a 1080 (or 1180 by that time)

this entire split generational horsepower boost shit does not sit well with me, regardless if its sony or microsoft

Why do you think that?

It's not impossible to manage.

Y'all ever seen...

...a PC game? They, like, scale and shit. :O
I think so because the Xbone install base isn't worth fully catering your new console to. Better to start afresh.

Maybe not impressive for high-end PC users, but DEFINITELY impressive for a home console.

Again, barely so come Holiday 2017. The 5.15 TF AMD card is releasing this summer for $199. That's no high-end card, and in a year and a half it will be a budget card at best.

Lol. Seriously though, what a pointless announcement. How the hell is anyone suppose to be excited for the Xbox One right now when you just revealed basically everything is on PC and you have Scorpio coming? Even if Neo releases at the time rumors state, the specs are irrelevant since the already leading console by a large margin will have the upgraded brother console out for more than a year before Scorpio hits the shelves.

Xbox One will represent the low-end option for entry into the Xbox ecosystem. I don't see why it's that hard to understand. It's an easier sell than selling a last-gen console, too, because it will still continue to run many games and the majority of non-gaming apps moving forward.

the significant change though is that with XB1 it was beaten by low end GPUs almost immediately. Scorpio is high end GPUs now and maybe mid-range by the time it comes out. It won't be beaten by super cheap PCs nearly as quickly as XB1 was.

AMD will have $230-270 gpu on the market with >5 TF by the end of this month. 2018 $200 gpu will outperform Scorpio comfortably.

How feasible would be to this PC new Xbox runs Steam (PC games)? If Microsoft does this (basically have its own Steam Machine without SteamOS lol) then I'm board.

holiday 2017 is a long time. I can see this going for $399 or $449 by then. definitely no higher than $499.

Also, this seems like enough time for Sony to respond with the Neo. I'm sure they won't want to lose the power war after all the good it's done for them with PS4.

Was seriously considering a purchase of the Alienware Alpha i7.

How will this stack up to that?

I would hope it trounces something that has hardware that is 3+ years old at that point.

Anyway, I can't say that I think this is a good idea, but I'll reserve final judgment until we see the price. Too many SKUs/HW.

Scorpio is going to be cheaper than a PC

Wouldn't doubt an E3 2017 spec bump is in the plans for MS if Sony makes it necessary. They made a bold claim of "The most powerful console ever". I don't think they would make that statement 18 months out if they didn't intend for it be true. Time will tell.

When do you think the ps5 will come out? 2018? Will they rush things along because of this? Interesting times!
They will probably have another revision ready by then, but I'm wondering how anyone makes the pitch to developers to start a whole new cycle if any of this nonsense takes off. Who makes games for a PS5 / Xbox (?) if the combined user base of PS4, XBox, Scorpio, and Neo is hitting the 100 million unit mark? Compatibility will not be an issue going forward, but I'm wondering who takes the plunge first to make games that will not work on the established user bases. This is some twilight zone stuff.

It's not pointless. I might have bought Neo this fall. Now I will seriously think about it if I can buy a much more powerful console for third party games in a year. I can wait that one year as I already own PS4 for its exclusives.

Damn. This may just turn out to be my first ever Xbox. I wonder if the next round (this vs the Neo) will put Xbox back on top.

What are the chances of Sony updating the Neo to match the Scorpio?

It will be significantly faster in terms of GPU, probably not in terms of CPU.
It won't play the hundreds of PC exclusives released every year.

Not happening. All of this is about Microsoft pushing their own ecosystem.

Ok, thread is flying. If this has been answered, I am sorry.

They talked about VR multiple times, but never said the words Oculus or Vive. Do they not have a deal in place yet? Do they have their own VR device coming?

It was just weird they talked about VR, but never said which VR or detailed any marketing deals with the VR companies.

Xbox Scorpio 1,5 years away. Playstation 4,5 about 4 months away. Sony cannot change specs at this time. I'm guessing Playstation 5 will be out holliday 2018 with even higher specs than the Scorpio. Console lifecycle will be alot shorter from now on I think.

We would already get reports from factories if PS4k would be launching for 2016 Holiday period...

Guys, get your shit together lol.
If the Neo releases a whole YEAR before the Scorpio, then of course it'll be weaker.
This is how hardware works.

Sony will have a huge price advantage though.
