I don't know where they are heading.
Their strategy is all over the place.
All their games are also available on Win10 so the identity of the Xbox is lost.
Now they're launching a Slim model and are sabotaging their own sales with the promise of a more powerful box at the end of 2017.
For me this doesn't make sense.

yup, and on 2019, MS will have the more powerful machine and so on... say goodbye to the traditional console generation

Developers will just treat them like the closed box PC's they kind of are and target a low minimum spec target they update every so many years with token features meant to please some of the users who update often to the latest machines. Imagine a PC where the user could not tweak any hidden confit option or use non developer sanctioned ways to alter effects/game code.

XBOX ONE S

40% LESS GRAVE TO DIG

Funny, but,

That's the whole point of forward and backward compatible the XBO S is cheaper entry point for people who don't need, care about the specs but can play all the same games.

PS is for those of us who care about the highest fidelity.

So they both have a place in the market. Hence the "no more generations" mantra.

Not if the Neo is coming out this holiday as is the rumor. No way for them to make changes to the specs. The fact that dev kits have been out already for the Neo, making hardware changes cannot be done. Perhaps they can push the clocks, but even that at this time might not be feasible.

I think the way Phil laid it out and explained it all was really well done and I think having devs talk about stuff was smart as well. The Todd Howard comments about Fallout VR was telling.

Didn't they ship out PS4 dev kits with 4GB of RAM?

The Xbox 360 sold over 85 milion units. The Xbox One stands at 20 something. This could cannibalize the sales and make it even more underwhelming comparing to the predecessor. How is this fine?

This isn't new is it? I mean what happened towards the beginning of last gen? I am sure they know these things and have prepared for it.

Can someone put this into a PC context. What are we looking at here, mid-tier rig or a near high end PC?

GPU would be somewhere in the high-midrange, or low high end of current GPUs. By 2017 holiday it will be squarely mid range. CPU could be total poop again though depending on what they've done there.

OK guys what am I missing? Are folks really saying "day one" just because the specs?

This confuses me as well. Like...software is the freaking same, and there will still be the stupid parity on consoles, except now it'll be the other way round. There's no point in having a "more powerful" iterative console at this point, especially sincei t'll still have to run without major downgrades on older ones. People like throwing money to flashy montages as always

With everything coming to win10 in any case I could get something like the scorpio by upgrading my GPU right now

Price will be the determining factor. At this point that is the only thing that stands between building a 4K PC or getting a Scorpio or PS4Neo.

A PC will always be more expensive. The performance manufacturers will constantly push for higher standards for greater profits. Even with a so called 'smartphone' cycles, the PC market will always have first dips at new offerings.

IIRC, the Neo's specs haven't been locked down yet. Let's not forget that the PS4 got double the RAM fairly late in the process.

So pray tell, how did Sony go from 4GB of DDR3 RAM in PS4 devkits to 8GB of DDR5 RAM before launch? Guess that's not a change to spec huh? SMH.

Does the power really matter until Microsoft has a naughty dog, guerilla games, or Santa Monica studios? We don't need more PC brute force graphics we need great development teams. Which Microsoft still lacks. Forza 7 for Scorpio will probably still have baked in lighting and no dynamic day night cycle just to hit 4k60.

This is very true. I think hardware is one part of the solution but I think still Sony has done and amazing job in respects of variety of experiences they offer. But extra power Def helps MS's causes.

So with Xbox basically a Windows 10 box now......have Ms talked about forwards compatibility here?

They mentioned Scorpio is backwards compatible. But will xb1 be playing all Scorpio games?

Or is this basically the PC approach.

If the latter.....then Xbox is officially not a closed box anymore, and hence not a console.

I wonder how devs feel about that? And if it not Xbox as starts going down the PC game track... unoptimized for any one tech spec...and how that will contrast with Sony's emphasis on neos closed limit on SW approach.

Sounds like they will all be BC/FC. It's part of the UWP plan. Get everything on one store and available across the board. Sell at different prices and games fluctuate between the spec sets. There really aren't any console exclusives anymore anyway.

Honestly I think Microsoft is All in on a PC type of experience with gaming, and they creating a platform around that and this new xbox signifies a new model where they pretty much have upgrade cycles that may mirror Windows OS, also in doing so unifying their OS to be the end all be all for any piece of computing that they are involved in. Im curious to see if they do go with a modular upgrade path where they can upgrade mid cycle(3-4 year cycle), then a new box every full cycle(6 years) rinse and repeat.

MS is all in on creating a platform, a la Google/apple/Facebook. X strat has too feed into that, the big movements are not hardware related and are not on display.

Psst! Hey! Whats does backwards and forward compatibility mean? Bc with all xbox games(original, and 360) and forward means gamea that are being released now? Or what?

MS acting like this is high end.

This is not half as fast as GPUs out now let alone how mid-range it will be in 2017.

WTH announce it so early too?!?

what GPUs are twice as fast as this? I think only 1070 (barely) and 1080 beat this? and they're weird Nvidia TFs which don't compare anyway

Lol. Microsoft Studios does have great teams.

I'm mostly annoyed by the 4K talk. There is just no way any of these two new systems will run games at true 4K. Unless it's a 2D game maybe.

This is golden.

With all the games coming to windows now - there is literally no incentive to buy an Xone no matter what hardware it contains for those who have custom PCs

Yeah, I've always run a good PC and a single console so I guess I will never consider the Xbox again, no matter what hardware its running.

This will be 4 years so it's reminiscent of the Xbox to 360 short cycle we saw. They're just giving us more heads up and promising native BC from day one.

Nintendo's March release date makes more sense now. They knew this was going to happen.
Nintendo's NX reveal presentation has to be absolutely spectacular for them to do well. There's just so much hardware out there vying for people's attention at this point.

"Please buy our new Xbox One S for $300 and then purchase the Scorpio for $X a year later!"

If Xbox One sales weren't bad enough as is they are fucking dead now.
The audience who wants a high end console and willing to pay $400-500 at launch in 1.5 years is different than the one that wants a mid-cycle console at $300 today.

I just can't understand their Announcement structure.
Why the f would you announce a first (Upgraded?) Slim at the same time of announcing Next Gen Console.
Let's not beat around the bush, that's what's they've done,lol.
Sales would pretty much systematically stop (slow right down) and pre-orders for Scorpio would start (hopefully).

A huge rift,
I mean, think of it this way. Me. A person who follows alot (majority of Consoles and Games), and was contemplating of going to get a XboxOne once i saw the Forza Game (because Australia, lol) only to rethink my step and think well, maybe i should just get this Upgraded Slim of XboxOne with the S....
Only to be thrown back even further now because f it. I might as well wait for Scorpio.
*scratches head*

And that's not even thinking on whether it'd be a smart investment and/or waiting for the competitors.

Thrown a spanner in the works imo.
I agree announcing them alongside each other isn't a smart move, but the reasons you and others give don't wash with me.

I don't think it eats itself too much.

If someone has sat on their hands for 3-4 years not buying an Xbox One or PS4 then they are clearly not in any rush to go out and buy the latest and greatest equipment available.

So why would you rush out to buy Scorpio or Neo on day one? You wouldn't, you're not that kind of buyer.

You are prepared to wait for price drops. You're prepared to wait for support. You want the best value. Scorpio and Neo won't provide you that, so you'd still get the slim and then you will upgrade to any slim revision of Scorpio and Neo.

Holiday 2017 is lame as fuck. 0 reason to announce other then to beat Sony to the punch despite everyone and their grandma already knows about Neo.

On the plus side, Neo's specs have been underwhelming since day one. Go balls to the wall and give me a $599 beast dammit.

It will be significantly faster in terms of GPU, probably not in terms of CPU.
It won't play the hundreds of PC exclusives released every year.

Yeah, considering most (all?) Xbone exclusives are on PC as well, the comparison will never benefit the Scorpio.

Like, you're getting all the Xbox games AND all the PC games.

Which I think is what MS wants to compete with Sony, tbh.

Damn. This will destroy the PS4 Neo. If this is indeed 6TF then it more powerful than my gaming PC.

I might be tempted to ditch my PS4 and move to Xbox as my main console. Sony needs to beef up the Neo specs if they want to compete with this.

At the end...the games will detroy a console, not the hardware specs.

Platform warriors assemble!
