I wonder how devs feel about that? And if it not Xbox as starts going down the PC game track... unoptimized for any one tech spec...and how that will contrast with Sony's emphasis on neos closed limit on SW approach.

The Xbox would be their ideal closed box, like iOS is for Apple as opposed to the "hack able/customisable" OS C/macOS. Think of it as a PC where you can only use Windows Store apps and have no access to configure files and/or custom mod tools the game publisher and platform maker (MS) did not approve. The UWP box.
 
I'm just catching up with the press conference and l can now get Forza Horizon 3 on Windows 10 (this year). If Xbox Scorpio has NO exclusives then it's a hard sell unless it's hundreds of dollars cheaper than a PC of the equivalent specification.

It was a neat announcement, but I'm really curious to how the general consumer will take it. I suspect many won't care about it if they are planning to buy the Xbox One S.. because if they did then the Xbox One and S wouldn't do to hot on the market after this announcement.
 
So as John Carmack said: "for the same given paper spec, a console will deliver twice the perf of a PC" - does this mean the Scoprio is the equivalent of 12 Terraflops at the end of 2017?

And interestingly, Microsoft didn't say anything about RAM on Scorpio (16 GB according to the leaks). Are they waiting to see if Sony's NEO really has only 8 GB, to counter it?

Seems to me as if they are pretty serious this time...

Backward means Scorpio will play Xbox one games.
Forward means Xbox one will play scorpio games.

Also you can't go "balls to the wall" for 599 that much more than for 400-450, unless the box is huge.

For CONSOLES it is. He clearly said, "We believe it will be the most powerful console ever". He is NOT saying the most powerful gaming device ever. Not sure why this is tripping people up. Unless you are ignorant and just want to always compare consoles to PC's, this announcement was about consoles and having the most powerful console box.

I think they did this early was because the wildcard that the NEO is. Sony said they wont talk about it at E3, but they official recognized the existence of the NEO. I think MS did not want to come out of the biggest gaming media event without having something to counter the NEO. I think that is the reason they decided to do what they did.
 
On one hand, I like the idea of backwards and forwards compatibility being a thing for consoles going forward. On the other hand, PC already does this. With so many XB games also coming to PC, I may just opt out of XB and go Windows only. I'm glad MS is publishing so many of their games on XB and PC.

Seems like great hardware for people who want 4k & higher performance but don't want a PC, though.

If Neo is 5.5 Tflops, then Scorpio is going to be waaaaay undercutted by time it comes out and the X1 Slim is not getting a big enough head start to pull PS4 upgraders away.

Plus, Sony might price-drop the Neo right before Scorpio is announced and cause even more problems for MS.

MS's heart in the right place, but the timing is horrible.
 
Wait am I crazy or Todd confirmed the Vive will work with Scorpio?
Yesterday he talked about Fallout 4 working with Vive. Then today he said Fallout 4 VR will work on the Scorpio.

Was the Vive working on the Scorpio something already known?

Consoles pretty much give you what you expect from their numbers. They have for a long time now.
 
as a PC gamer neo still looks like the better option with this whole "play anywhere" thing microsoft is doing. going to be able to play a lot of great games from both companies.
 
That Scorpio reveal was magnificent. They actually used the word "Scorpio". That was amazing. And they confirmed backward and forward compatibility. Daaaaamn.

The video was like one big love letter to fans saying "We will never release an underpowered Xbox again".

What a fucking change from May 2013.
 
I legitimately do not care about Project Scorpio whatsoever. Microsoft has enabled me to play their games on PC so I'm going to abandon their consoles completely.
 
So would it be a push to say Xbox Scorpio life-span will be 2017/18- to 2020? will the console last that long? Or will they bring out another console, by 2019 with 6k resolution?

I guess purely from a hardware point of view the standings would be Xbox Scorpio top of the tree, with PS4k and NX again lagging way behind....
 
I'm not really into these quick hardware iterations for MS and Sony, but hopefully, it won't be a thing going forward...... And why announce Xbox One S and Project Scorpio on the same day? That's going to kill their sales for the S model. I think a year and a half wait is not that long for someone unless the S is really cheap. But I do see a reason why MS wants to jump on "next gen" because they must be so sick of hearing that the Xbox One is underpowered and they can focus on games and not resolution and frame rates... until maybe when PS5 is out after the Scorpio and this will all happen again.
 
Keeping all games compatible with the existing models gives Microsoft and Sony no real reason to target lower price points. Both of the upgrade boxes (and VR) are aimed at enthusiasts with money. I would be shocked if either is under $399, and wouldn't be that surprised to see higher price points of $499. I think this will be console gaming's equivalent to Apple's pro line for the Macbook, iPad, etc.

No, its easy. Most of the people that play games do not want a PC, they play on console.

You know that Sony has lied about what would be talked about in E3 before right? Just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if that ended up being the case..

There's not much Sony has to do to match Neo's specs looking at baseline leaks, both consoles are using polaris, so it's just a matter of increasing clockrates at this point. I do think Sony will be able to outdo them if they launch at the same time in 2017.

It will be interesting If Sony is able to offer a 6TF console ahead of Microsoft in 2017 though, I find this is a long wait for a 6TF console from MS. GPU specs and the AMD timeline would be way ahead by then for both CPU's and GPU's
 
I wouldn't be surprised if they end up having to lower the clock speed some due to heat issues.
It'll be interesting to see what Sony does with Neo now, it really feels like them saying Neo won't be at E3 was because it's been delayed a bit to fiddle with the specs a bit. Sony will probably want to make sure they hit 399, but the scoprio sounds like it will be over that.

Stole Sony's thunder when everyone was yelling Microsoft is dead and the Xbox One is weak and that it'll only fall more behind.

Given the timelines, it feels a little less real if I'm honest and, frankly - having not paid attention, I'm wondering what the play is with such an early announcement. I guess things are different to a normal generational refresh but still.

What would price projections in Fall 2017 be for this thing? To date, nothing higher than $399 has actually stuck with a decent number of consumers.

They don't need to do anything. Xbox Scorpio will be like the original Xbox, sure it's most powerful, but the greatest and majority of games were being developed for the lesser PS2, which in this case would be the PS4 Neo. Sony's got the majority of the market for a long time as long as they don't do any PS3-level screw ups.
 
Jesus the amount of warriors trashing Neo is horrendous. How much you betting that Neo will try and match Scorpio and release earlier?

I wonder whether MS will do a total redesign of the casing or keep it similar so consumers don't get too confused?

Its already out. Its called a PC

Most xbox games are or are coming to PC


If you want an xbox just get the slim itd pretty sexy at least.
