First Look: Santa Monica Studio’s New God of War on PS4

Change is good.

If you want the old GoW experience you have half a dozen games you can play and enjoy.

But games and gameplay has to evolve, and this is the right direction.

Super glad they changed so much - coming from someone who just replayed all GoW a couple of weeks back and loved them. New direction looks dope. No need to do the same shit again.

Combat looked kinda clunky and unresponsive but I definitely like that they try and change it up. I think I wouldn't have been down for another purely hack n slash type game.

Looking forward to it.

I'll miss the revenge-crazy Ghost of Sparta, but it's nice to see this transformation, as well as this entirely new game mechanic.

Definitely interested in seeing how this plays out.

It was a necessary change to compete as a AAA, you wouldn't have been able to with the older games.

Looking forward to it.

So, he moved to Norway and hitched with a girl there, and now that the romantic vacation is over he's going to be slaughtering the northern gods?

That's fine and all, but not an excuse for that combat. You'd think they'd actually change it for the better.

Character action is dead. Save us DMC.

Whether you like the change or not, i really commend SSM for taking an existing IP and doing a different take on it. They could have very easily just make HD God of War but decided to take a risk and try and do something else with the franchise. So far what i have seen is really interesting.

Looks like they're changing the gameplay and making it less hack and slash. Dammit, what does a man have to do to get a third person action game!?? Where the hell is DMC5? Ninja Gaiden? They took freaking GOW now too, where the whole point was to beat the shit out of everything in anger and mutilate enemies.

I want to like this game, but I'm tired of every game thinking it needs this super cinematic and engrossing story. Some games just need to play great and fuck all else. Dad of War is exciting, but also kind of sad to be honest.

People who like GOW weren't saying that.
I like GoW but it definitely needed to shake things up. I like that they made Kratos a actual character now, and I like that they are going for other mithology. What I don't like is how bad the gameplay looks. Shit seems on Ryse level.
That we saw ....... and that's an opinion. I welcome the change.
Any one that watches the gameplay video can see how dumbed down and janky it is.

Just because you don't like the the new gameplay change doesn't mean it devolved.
Oh, but it did, this is not really up for debate lmao. It devolved, and it really wasn't all that complex to even begin with, so this is just dissapointing.

yeah thats the only thing i'm not fucking with, combat looks slower and clunkier.

but calmer family man kratos is sooooo needed. dude got stale as hell after the last 6 or 7 games. loved those interactions with his son. if they kill the kid after like 20 minutes it's gonna be wack.

I've already stated my scepticism concerning the changes. Ultimately, while the game looks really nice, the gameplay so far has left me largely unimpressed. Given that they want Kratos to embrace his more serene side, I'm not sure how much of a focus there will be on combat, but unless this is going to be a puzzle platformer, I suspect there will be at least some fighting. More than anything, combat is the core of the franchise, and even with a change in direction, some of that ought to be retained. And yet, the one fight from the demo did not look particularly enticing.

I readily acknowledge that I probably wouldn't have minded the reveal as much if it had been a new IP. However, I absolutely feel that the demo did not do a particularly good job showing the appeal of the changes (more free roaming, exploration, puzzles, more varied skirmishes - basically anything showing off more nuance and diversity definitely would have helped on that front).

They made Kratos, a character universally hated, seem interesting within a ten minute demo. I'd say that's pretty extraordinary.

It looks absolutely fantastic.

I'm fine with this. DMC5 will scratch the character action itch (eventually, god dammit) and this will be a nice change of pace.

Yeah anyone can see that it's an opening area of the game so they don't rush to make claims of being dumbed down.
