A report at the start of the year mentioned PlayStation was cutting two live-service projects from its first-party studios. These were an unannounced game from Bend Studio (of which we revealed an early look last year) and a multiplayer God of War game that was being developed by Bluepoint Games.

This cancellation caught many by surprise, with details sparse beyond the fact that it was supposed to be a multiplayer game set in the God of War universe. Thankfully, we recently gained access to development screenshots that offer a detailed look at the game's planned setting.

A multi-player God of War Ragnarök would have been epic. Co-op mission would have been crazy good.

More proof the decision to acquire Bungie was a big mistake.

They should add each map bare, unfinished and empty in the game and allow the player to visit them in a mode called "Hall Of Shame" or "Defeated Monsters"

This is the straw that broke the camels back for me and made me turn away from Playstation. Wasting Bluepoint on a fucking live service game. They could've produced an epic remake of the God of War Greek Saga but no, they had to do GaaS trash. Fuck Sony and their clueless management.

Yeah.. nobody asked for a solo GoW multiplayer game. So they did us a solid. Sadly they wasted Bluepoints talent and time on this.

I think they'll be fine. Or we could go to the savior Xbox who runs good companies!

You guys remember the MP from God of War Ascension?

Having Bluepoint make this was ridiculously dumb. But there is potential in a melee MP in the style of God of War.

I imagine they'll be able to repurpose all their work for a new IP set in Greece.

What a disaster Jim and Hermen's management has been; how much damage they've done to the PS5 generation and its studios. How is it possible Hermen is still at Sony? I don't understand.

He was probably executing on Jim's master plan. That's the only way 1 of them survived.

That would be Bluepoint management as they pitched the idea.

Lol, imagine this having moved forward and getting revealed without leaks:

Black Screen
BluePoint Logo
God of War Music
Shots of Greek environments

Everyone: "Oh wow, Bluepoint is making a GOW 1 remake!"

"BluePoint presents..... GOW GAAS!!!"

Imagine

5 v 5 arena
Each character a 'hero' in the style of God of War.
Perhaps, each a demi god of some kind.
Perhaps each sponsored by a god, and at some point during the match when they've accumulated enough favours, their sponsor gives them a boon.
That would be their ult.

Again, there's potential in the concept. Sony had the absolute wrong studio working on it, though.

This isn't the first God of War multiplayer game.

God of War Ascension multiplayer was epic imo.

I honestly don't care. The very idea that they would waste resources of single player games just to chase trends is just pathetic.
Whats next, God of War dating sim because of a trend or some games are making money? Gtfo with this shit.

I agree. A live service game set in ancient Greek or Norse mythology could be cool AF. Bluepoint is just not the right studio to be commissioned to make a game like that.

I mean they can do both by reusing assets.
But I'm convinced this is a new kind of generation of gamers that are hating on multiplayer games.

When I was still in school everyone was hyped to get back home and hop on online to play multiplayer on PS3 and 4.

Just to name a few;
God of War Ascension,
Max Payne 3,
Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5,
Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2,
Uncharted 3 and 4,
The Last of Us,
Gran Turismo 5,
Playstation Home,
Fortnite,
Battlefield,
Call of Duty.

And to this day, we still hop online and play multiplayer games.

Maybe it's a cultural thing?

He and Jim were good old mates. He was next in line once Jim left.

What an incredibly dumb project. What's crazy is Sony has had good MP games in the past that are just sitting there on the shelf. Socom, Planetside, etc.
Socom never scored well and a remake of their best one(Socom II) would probably have a 60% average.

It did have decent online for it's time but the gameplay is very antiquated.

I never really cared for it myself but it's a beloved franchise. People still play on private servers.

I would bet good money that a modern Socom would do better than fuckin Fairgame$.

You can't deny Blue Point's talent. Damn just imagine instead of a fucking GaaS, they actually used those modern graphics to remake the Greek Saga.

Nope nope nope. Can't have any of that. A player using a Megan the Stallion skin would have polished off their kill streak on that stairway if Sony's wildest dreams were fulfilled.

It's not really about "hating multiplayer games". Lots of people here play and like multiplayer games, myself included.
It's more about the "opportunity cost" of having traditionally single player studios working on multiplayer only titles, specially in the current reality of the industry where games take half a decade to come out.

If after Uncharted 2 it had taken Naughty Dog 5 years to release Uncharted 3, and it was ONLY the multiplayer part of the game, you think people back then would have been happy?

Thanks god they deleted all these shitty nosense. We are having the worst gen ever by Sony thanks to these decisions, but better stop now than waste more time and money on these GAAS.

Naraka Bladepoint did great but I always think melee focused MP games are a dumb idea. Playing with different ranges just appeals to more people.

I hope BluePoint stays in the Live Service family.

One of the worse decision of Sony. Wasted bluepoints talents and wasted allot of money and time. Despite of Sony PS winning the console wars, Sony made two very bad decisions this generation, number one woke infestation and 2nd Gaas obsession.

They used to be multiplayer modes or standalone multiplayer games that came with a single-player campaign and were delivered as finished packages.
Now, they are first and foremost live services, built for engagement and designed to generate long-term revenue, with game design led by monetization experts and profitability engineers.
They are not the same thing.
Many people have realized that these services are intentionally designed to manipulate player behaviour, relying on sales tactics, FOMO, and addictive design practices.

Well, having platinum God of War 1, 2 and 3, I would rather the God of War multiplayer based on Ragnarök gameplay.

Nothing stopping them from doing the Trilogy remake afterwards. That way everybody is happy.

Nah its just people being dumb and reactionary.
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the idea (based on what little is known) and for all we know the pitch might have been great on paper.

Bluepoint are technically strong, but creatively entirely untried. Their last (and only to date) original title was Blast Factor back in 2006, and that had a multiplayer add-on, their last release was the heavily melee focussed Demons' Souls remake so acting like this was some left-field pivot enforced by Sony strikes me as saying more about the complainers prejudices than their insight into the business.

One thing I've noticed, is there will always be someone complaining about not wanting GaaS, remaster, remake, part 2, new IP, etc.

For me who has been gaming since the 90s, give me all genres. Just don't cancel any game that's near release.

'lovely plumage...'

The phrase "lovely plumage" is from Monty Python's "Dead Parrot Sketch", The phrase "lovely plumage" is from Monty Python's "Dead Parrot Sketch", where the shopkeeper uses it to ironically describe the deceased parrot as a beautiful bird, even though it is clearly dead. It is said by the shopkeeper (Michael Palin) to the disgruntled customer (John Cleese) in a nonsensical attempt to deny the parrot's demise, which is a key element of the sketch's humor...
