Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I'm really enjoying the EVGA 1080 SC. I have to give special thanks to Newegg, I ordered the card at noon on the 14th and chose 3-day shipping but I received it in the mail exactly 24 hours later. Maybe it helps that I'm only 2 hours away from their HQ, but it was still a pleasant surprise.

The Doom demo at everything maxed at 1440p on my Acer XB271HU at 144 Hz with G-Sync enabled melted my face off: it was my first experience with all of these technologies:
  • 1440p Resolution
  • >60 Hz
  • G-Sync

Suffice it to say, I was blown away.

Seems like NCIX no longer has stock of the SC in their warehouse. Dunno if this means that they shipped them from the warehouse or it was just a bug and they never had stock to begin with.

That sucks

I just got mine! Can't wait to this afternoon to test it out!

The fans off threshold should actually be 60C. 45C idle is nothing to these cards, that kind of heat won't have any meaningful effect on the card.

I am more annoyed because my card idles at ~1700MHz, at around 59-63C because I have three screens. It's constantly switching fans on and off because the threshold for that is 60C. Same MSI Gaming X card as you have. I really need to look into Nvidia inspector soon to fix these idle clocks.

MSI Gaming X with three monitors here as well. I just wish nvidia would fix the multiple display idling issue. Nvidia inspector it is I guess.

EDIT: I'm testing now to see where my idle temps are with nvidia inspector multi display power saver turned on.

Please report back about the inspector thing. Would like to do this on my 970 as well but I don't see how I could downclock it for desktop use and boost it to my current OC in games since both use the same performance level?

What are the options for cards with shorter height and custom coolers? My case layout limits height a lot more than length for me so I currently have a Gigabyte 970 G1 instead of an MSI or ASUS card for instance.

Right now I'm looking at the Gigabyte G1 and EVGA SC. The SC seems like a really nice but I'm a bit concerned by the reference PCB. Anything else worth buying that would fit into a similar footprint?

the core clock thing is because all NVIDIA cards thermal throttle now ever since GPU BOOST was introduced. if you want to remove the thermal throttling limitation run your fans between 80-100% constantly without a fan curve and you should be okay.

Heh no thanks. Why am I being thermal throttled when my temps are 76 or less?

Not sure this will work for you because of your 3 screen setup but try uninstalling GeForce experience and turning off hardware acceleration in your browser of choice.
I was getting crazy spikes at idle but after doing those 2 things its back to super low core and memory clocks at idle and light usage.

Very pleased with the MSI Gaming X so far. +150 core/ +500 memory through Afterburner so no increase in Power or Voltage. Temps are exactly same as non OC: Idle 45(38 with fans) and temps between 68-76 under full load. Never above 76 and fans usually spinning at 65%. Very quiet as the reviews have stated.

The only strange thing I noticed is the core clock will lower itself at times from 2050 to 2038 to 2025.

The question I have is what is better for the longevity of the card: The default fan profile which leaves the fans completely off until reaching 50c where my card idles at 45c OR custom fan curve with the fans always running which allows my gpu to idle a little cooler at 38c?

Do you have good airflow through your case? The max temp I've seen is 66c with default fan, and that's with 5 hours straight gaming, leaving Arkham Knight running for 2 hours and then playing Quantum Break for 3 hours.

Yeah, that's definitely something that would melt your face. First time with 144hz and GSync is always special. Soooooo smooth

It hardly matters but I'd go with option 2 as mechanical stuff doesn't like being constantly switched on and off.

Ordered one MSI Gaming X too. CPU (i7 4790K) would be a waste without it.
Should arrive in a couple of days.

Though I have to squeeze some cables inside the motherboard for the card to fit. Hope it does not give me any issues.

I think the air flow is ok, I mean how would I determine that? Its a full size case but cpu idle temps have always been a bit high. Another factor is I live in South Florida and my room in particular is hot and has poor airflow.

I guess that could be a factor, I'm in the UK and room temp is around 20c being summer n all, my case has 2 140mm intake fans, and 3 140mm exhaust fans, 2 of those attached to a CPU liquid cooler radiator blowing through. I also have the 2 intake and 1 exhaust fan powered through molex connectors, so they are always at their max speed, but still very quiet. Always very cool inside, can really feel the air pumping through and out. Mines full size too.

Boost variation is not thermal throttling. It can happen based on several variables, not just temperature.

But, for instance, is the EVGA SC as O/C-able as the gigabyte G1 ? I guess no because of the power limit. So tempted to buy one since it's the cheapest here.

I don't know, I'm not seeing much of overclocking difference between AIB cards either. What chip you'll get in your card seems to be more important than what brand / model that card will be.

ewwww, do they have no faith in their products that they are trying to skew the results??
It's more of a 'hey everyone does it so lets boost things by 1-2%' Same shit for motherboard FSB stuff that ran at anything above 100.0Mhz imo.

Cherry picking a card for review is far more impactful and people looking at reviews shouldn't be swayed by anything other than noise, power, temps, build/power phases/cooling, really. Performance is basically going to be exactly the same or related to whatever OC a card reaches. It's not like these are uniquely different products. 'Oh the MSI is 8504 score vs ASUS 8501 score!' MHz is Mhz, buy the better card.

Do we know anything about the MSI Aero OC cards? They're up for pre-order at Amazon at $640, but I don't want a drastically inferior card for such a small price difference.

Also, I've been reading the thread but lots of stuff goes over my head. I'm not terribly familiar with overclocking beyond easy, conservative overclocking in MSI afterburner. Short of the $720 MSI Gaming card, which seem to be the best in terms of noise, heat, and OC potential?

My room is 30c + during the summer, its pretty bad.

What's the ambient temps for you both? That can scew the results quite a bit.

About 10c difference

So I'm maybe leaving the US in a month's time and going back to the UK - what are the chances of (non-FE) 1080s actually being in stock before then so I can not get gauged with UK prices?

Ebuyer are probably the best bet in UK, they seem to get random stock in fairly often, their dates for expected stock don't seem to mean a thing, as all cards have the same date...but they have the best prices in the UK that I've seen.

Hmm... Do I just need to jump into the super expensive MSI Gaming card, or should I hold out for the STRIX or a cheaper one? I live in Texas and am concerned about temps (high ambient temperature in the summer). I have a small Node case, but airflow is generally pretty good.

*whew* My SC 1080 finally came in!

Turns out that they had stock today but didnt email me that it was time to pick up my order. Now I can finally unbox my 1440P gsync monitor and use my Vive!

I would recommend the MSI, EVGA, and Gigabyte cards. ASUS' customer service is terrible so I would advise against buying their products.

I'm back on my Vive tonight for the first time in 3 or 4 weeks! Woo hooooooo

Sigh....I'm done waiting. I found a $300 980 GTX on craigslist. That's much better than my 960. And that 980 card is still no slouch.

I haven't really gotten a chance to mess with my Vive since my 1080 has come in. I just had Lasik done and I really wanted to go easy on my eyes. My week follow-up is tomorrow so I'm hoping he clears me to do any activity I please.

people have waited months for the 1000 series, and here some are giving up on waiting, after the cards have been announced, launched, just because of low stock? wow

There arent any big games right now to make a 9x0 series gpu a worthy purchase... jajajaja

All have to do is setup a profile and watch list on Nowinstock.net and they pop all day. I decided to pick up a second card, went back in to turn notifications back on, and had one within a couple hours. Could have had a half dozen more in the day or so since.
