Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Sucker Punch, what the fuck

Two years with no word on what you're working on.

why do you do this to me

We have maybe 4 or 5 shows this year (Gamescom, TGS, Paris Game Week, VGA or VGX and PSX). 3 or 4 of those events could feature Sucker Punch next game, but my money is on either VGA/VGA or PSX.

Maybe Sony got the license for another Marvel hero and that's what Sucker Punch are working on? Hulk? Cap? Iron Man? Black Panther?! Ooh, I'm getting tingly just thinking about it!

A Sucker Punch Iron Man game could be soo good. They were originally rumoured to be doing the Spidey game, and Marvel has said they want more high-quality games, so maybe it's a possibility. I don't think Sony would want to fund too many exclusive, big budget games from I.Ps they don't own though.

It's a weird situation where they could still announce this year, but at the same time, I kind of expect them to be saved until next E3. But then that doesn't make sense either, because that means they'll be expecting around 4 years between games. And that's a long time. I imagine longer than anyone would like.

I really hope SP's next game isn't a shooter. Unfortunately, I could definitely see it being one.

Once its not another post apocalyptic open world game Im OK.

Its probably time to move away from Infamous though. Its had its time. Probably better off trying something fresh.

I mean, great, honestly.

I liked Second Son a lot, but that game needed a lot more time in the oven. It could have been a much better game than it came out as.

Hopefully whatever they have next really hits it out of the park.

Why is that?

It would be the next logical step in progression for them as Sony pushes more serious and gritty tones for their First-Party games. They've already got the TPS mechanics down with Infamous.

Remember they also hired one of the designers from Halo during the development of Second Son.

I don't think I would mind it too much if they made a shooter (as long as it's third person) but I hope they keep the supernatural aspect in their next game. Traversal always felt consistently good in inFamous, I don't want to lose that.

I would imagine SP's next game will arrive sometime early 2018, that way it'll have been around 3½ years since their last release with First Light, and with their relatively small studio size and this perhaps being a new IP it makes sense for it to take a bit longer to come out than what's the norm.

Thanks didn't knew about that

PS:

I changed the whole Design of the OP - if something is wrong with the pictures (stretching etc., let me know)

No problem, by the way MLB The Show Picture has Gravity Rush title name below it, little Photoshop insert error there lol. Also Giant Sparrow don't have the new format yet.

As much as I professed my unconditional love for everything Infamous on the last page, I completely agree.

I mean, the fundamentals were definitely there, the game played like a dream and a handful of missions really gave a sense of something the game could have become, had it been allowed a little more time and money. Which is not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. It's easily one of my favourite games this generation. But I feel it'd be remiss not to agree there.

First Light really added a lot to that fundamental playset - the melee and traversal was amazing and so much stronger as a one power system, but still had the same problem Second Son did which was a lack of content. Certainly meaningful content after you'd completed the story.

Anyway. I love Infamous. I have faith these guys will make really special games given more time.

Their last release was August 2014, and I believe they're now a mid-sized studio with upwards of 100 staff, but I don't see any mention of that on their website so cannot confirm. They're also hiring for a lot of positions on their website so I imagine development on their next game is really ramping up now.

JuanLatino, just looked at the OP again, great stuff, but I was wondering how come you haven't listed SIE Foster City Studio and SIE San Mateo Studio alongside XDEV? They supply the same third-party assistance that XDEV, SIE Japan Studio, SIE Santa Monica Studio and San Diego Studio does, though they aren't as big as those four.

For the scale and ambition of their projects starting with Second Son I'd say they're a relatively small team, but you're right, just looking at the amount of people that are supposedly employed it's a mid-sized studio. Hopefully they're continuing to grow so the wait won't be too long and the quality will be high.

The updated OP looks great

I just want to mention a couple of things:
-Q Games previously developed the PixelJunk games that appeared on PS3
-Plastic previously developed Linger in Shadows and Datura for PS3 only as well
-Bend Studio's black typeface/font on the black-blue gradient background makes it a bit hard to see

i completely forgot that those exist. Thanks for the reminder, i will add them to the OP

yeah i need to change that - also thanks for the other informations

Stretch the Current Project header over all the games listed. It looks weird with Gravity Rush 2 off on the side by itself (though I guess it represents SIEA's commitment to it pretty well).

The OP is also missing:
Here They Lie (Tangentlemen)
Modern Zombie Taxi Company (Vitei Backroom)
Wattam (Funomena)

I'll take that bet. You say they have 4 or 5 more shows this year (it's actually three, Gamescom and PGW are interchangeable and Sony don't announce games at the Game Awards) but do you really think they're going to announce a big western AAA game at TGS or even PSX? It's SIEE's conference or wait until 2017.

My money is on E3 2017, where it'll be announced alongside Naughty Dog's next project and Bloodborne 2.

Sly was my favorite platformer series on PS2 and I rank Sly 4 up there with Crack in Time as the best on PS3 so I really hope we get another one. That would probably be the game that hasn't been announced that would make me freak out the most. :D

Sucker Punch has to be a new IP. Shinobi said they weren't working on Infamous.

Edit - Infamous 2 was a great game.
Edit2 - I demand a Sly Cooper announcement this year.

The Sentinel (new Sony Interactive Entertainment trademark) could be it. Third person action-adventure game about a cyborg / robot?

Sly 4 was no Sly 2, but it was still pretty solid - the kind of 7.8 game that you love as if it was a 9. I keep hoping someone's making a new Sly game for the release of the almost assuredly bad movie that's on the way. Just the thought of a Sly game getting the same amount of development attention as the new Ratchet & Clank got is making me all excited.

Time to speculate about when Sony's games are releasing because why not?

- Q1 2017: Horizon, MLB
- Q2 2017: Detroit, Matterfall (GOTY)
- Q3 2017: Dreams
- Q4 2017: God of War, Spider-Man
- Q1 2018: Days Gone

I have no idea when to predict their smaller games like Drawn to Death and Edith Finch are releasing. They tend to show up at random on the PlayStation Blog like "Out next month!"

Maybe SP's project is the leaked Western we still know nothing about?

All of that artwork is still available on the artists website, and we saw how fast Sony swooped in the wipe the GoW artwork leak. So I think it's safe to assume that the artwork is related to projects that never got off the ground or were quietly cancelled.

First of all... Drawn to Death is likely to be coming out soon as I've had what seems to bw a more or less complete version of the game, trophies and all. It doesn't have also the usual Alpha or Beta text the devs leave usually in corner.

As for the Q2 to Q4 games, it looks like some games are not placed properly.

Generally, mainline God of War games are released mid-March.

As for Quantic Dream's games, they tend to release in fall (late Q3 or early Q4), with Heavy Rain being the exception (don't remember if it was delayed to March 2010).

As for Matterfall, I am pretty sure that Housemarque usually release their games in fall too. Although, it could be possible that it will release in Spring like Alienation did.

I have a good feeling about Detroit coming sooner than many of us expect. Based on what was shown at E3, behind closed-doors impressions, and how long it's been in development, I could totally see Detroit releasing in April/May next year.

Matterfall is a bit of a wild card. Housemarque games have come out all through the year in the past.

London Studios made so many games I played on ps2 and loved. What's happened to them, not a lot of output during the PS3 gen and now it seems they've been told to make VR games.

But yeah the confirmed games coming out and the rumoured games are just making smile from excitement, can't wait

because its made for an worldwide Audience & big budget similar to the Final Fantasy Games (if the Game really exists)

According to Verendus, there's that big-budget one which is more far off... and there's another one.

If the other one is more niche, say like Wild Arms anime-style or a Freedom Wars-style JRPG, I could easily see that be a TGS announcement.
