Street Fighter V Cinematic Story Mode - Spoiler Thread

But Ryu's powerup thing was horribly executed (should've just had him go super saiyan or something instead of whatever ambiguous butterfly love energy thing he did)

Yeah the whole Butterfly symbolism was a little odd- traditionally in Japan it's used as a symbol of love and marriage. That doesn't make a lick of sense with Nash coming back to life, Ryu conquering Dark Hadou, or Gill showing up.

They might be going for a kind of "butterfly effect" motif though- like this is an alternate timeline. The conversation between Gill and Kolin is pretty strange... like Ryu wasn't supposed to be the one to beat Bison (when it was Chun in the SF3 timeline) and they were talking how some events have changed.

Might be some kind of elaborate setup if they want to do another season of story or if for some god damn reason SF6 totally retcons SF3.

On second thought... maybe the butterfly is just Nash's soul.

Rashid was to the story mode as Hulk was to the first Avengers movie. For better or worse, he stole the show.

Also, FML at Gill. He was the cheapest piece of shit end-boss in a fighting game ever.

My boy Rashid got waaaay more screen time than I thought he would, Karin as well. I will say that the story mode made me want a smaller, spin off fighter with the Dolls.

Even though it has absolutely little revelance, first thing came to mind was them ripping off this guy with the butterfly shtick. This game is about how awesome Karin's social linking skills are, and Rashid = Stupei.

The dolls were by far the best part of the story. They've been in the street fighter lore for a long time now, so it's nice to actually see them play a part.

This story is some putrid anime shit. The only good part is Zangief. Good lord, give us arcade mode with stupid ass endings. At least those are fun.

I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Ryu still the Man, going beast mode on two of the toughest enemies.

Rashid bringing some heart to the story.

Ono should just put the funds for Season 2 into making them DLC characters, IMO. Much cheaper to rip off Cammy like they did DeKappa.

This was some anime plot nonsense. BUT, the characters were great. Standouts: Zangief, Rashid, R. Mika, Ibuki.

I hope this story mode gives at least a fraction of fuel for fan artists that are doing great jobs with Overwatch

Urien vs his tight suit was the hypest
Those muscles were ready to burst at anytime
Can't contain thong Urien that easily

Too much killing intent taking Necalis spot
You seen that spear throwing one tho?

See I thought the dolls were just multinational cammys, but I guess they wanted to double down on certain aspects on the dolls this time around. In this case, this doll's from Ethiopia now so... let's get tribal?

Edit: Ah wait a minute, she always had a spear and monkey. nvm me.

It's Capcom with SF
Would be more shocked if they didn't go crazy with the stereotypes
Point still stands even after your edit lol. I think there was a native-american doll too with face marks and a tooth necklace? Maybe the spear one had it

I really don't understand why people wanted story mode waste of rescourses where they could have used for creating more characters and improving gameplay. There is nothing fun about fighting CPU. Main thing that makes fighting games fun is fighting against people, against CPU theres no strategy, nothing fun about fighting mindless oponent. Also another thing about story mode in fighting games there no reason to replay.

Yeah lol, I actually forgot about all that. I'm fine with it.

Still she was fun to fight as with the rest, so I hope we can do something with these uniques moves. Decapre's v-skill, Create-A-Doll or something, whatever the fuck.

Personally, I loved it and hope they do a cinematic story for each season. Getting to fight all of the NPCs was a nice surprise, as was the whole thing being rendered in real time. Load times weren't an issue (PC here), but occasionally the Unreal engine would forget to load textures, giving the scene a otherworldly, N64 look.

As for the narrative, it was fun! Of course it's got it's problems but you've really, really got to consider the source material here. Stop trying to make it something it isn't and enjoy it for what it is.

The battle structure didn't bother me--probably because of the bonus NPCs--but I did find myself wondering if it would be better or worse had they added Soul Edge-like objectives to break the monotony. Throw F.A.N.G. six times to win, don't let the little hacker girl get hit, land a critical art--that sort of thing.

Regardless, this shows very good potential. Here's hoping for Season 2+!

You don't really understand or you don't really want to understand? You'll find that people are able to enjoy the same thing--in this case, fighting games--differently. Also, I can derive entertainment from a story more than once. Even a story as silly as this one.

are you sure you not just a member of the FGC?
I'm with you

Decapre had more stuff than the others
Won't be shocked to see her as dlc

Story mode was pretty fun. Karin got a ton of screentime which was nice, Rashid did too and they fleshed him out a bit and made him pretty likable.

Overall it was pretty much what I expected with an MK like story mode. A few things could have been done better (Neccali might as well have not been in the game) and the tired Satsui no Hado subplot was finally resolved and also thankfully not focused on for anymore than was absolutely necessary to get it dealt with. Bonus points for bringing up the headband at the very end, I don't think that ever got mentioned or referenced outside of Alpha 2 when it was first brought up.

Anyway, Capcom needs to hurry up and get arcade mode in. Once they get that in people can view the game as a complete package.

Yeah the whole Butterfly symbolism was a little odd- traditionally in Japan it's used as a symbol of love and marriage. That doesn't make a lick of sense with Nash coming back to life, Ryu conquering Dark Hadou, or Gill showing up.

The butterfly is symbolic for the "Holy", "Purifying", or "Life" power that Gill (and now Ryu) wield.

In the first scene, Charlie's soul is in limbo, being attacked by Necalli who is an otherworldy and mystical being, the butterfly appears and he wakes up, the butterfly representing Gill's power being used to ressurect him from the dead.

After that, Nash can use the power to absorb and purify the evil energy possessing Abel.

Necalli is "death", he gets hard countered by Ryu overcoming the SnH by using this new purifying "Life" power.

Then Ryu uses the power to kill Bison for good by purifying his soul.

Afterwards he uses the holy/life hadoken again, and it doesn't harm Chun or the girl, because they are good/pure of heart and thus do not get destroyed (purified) like evil people.

Then the butterfly goes to Gill to show symbolically that he has this power, the source of his Resurrection.

I like the story mode, there are stuff that can be improved, biggest one is the loading between fight and cutscene. I know being a real time cutscene is cool so we can mess with alt costume, but I think I prefer if it's just straight up video file so the match can load during the cutscenes so the match will takes place right after the cutscene. or the way Tekken 7 do it is also pretty cool where you get 'cinematic moments' during the matches, although I'm not sure if that'll end up annoying or not.

don't really like a couple of the story direction like Necalli and Chun-li not getting her moment. no visible damage on Bison after Nash sacrifice. I think they had a line to imply that Bison power diminishes a lot after Nash attack, but you don't really see it.

I wish there are season 2, oh and I kinda hope they make the story longer, I won't even mind if some of the story scene didn't get fully animated cutscene. maybe combination of still art with dialog in some places, some cool animated action scene, and your matches,

also would be cool if they add some gimmick matches like maybe add some limited tag team mechanic, it'd be awesome if you could get Ryu and Ken VS Bison moment like in the old animated movie.

Story mode has the same dumbass difficulty spike that survival has. It pisses me off! They don't do much on normal and then on hard the characters are ridiculously aggressive and jumping all over the screen. If gets difficult when you have to use a character that you don't use at all. I have never died so many times in SFV with Bison against Necalli in Story mode on hard. I don't really know how to use Bison (or charge characters as a whole) really well so I'm kind of stuck.

The actual fighting just gets in the way of the next cutscenes in this, just like Mortal Kombat. There should be special situations that come from single player that don't arise in a regular single player cpu match, like the old Soul Caliber on Dreamcast. I could have just watched this on YouTube and gotten the same experience, but I suppose this is what everyone wanted.

It was ok I guess. The best part was the first 30 seconds, but it would be nice to have some of the background stages they were fighting in.

Chun-Li is my favorite Street Fighter character, so keep in mind that I may have a massive bias.

I have no idea why a character that Capcom proudly proclaims as the "first lady of fighting", is constantly portrayed as being so fucking weak. This is two games in a row now where she's basically there to get her ass kicked and be rescued. Is it so much to ask that the most recognizable female fighting game character in the entire world does something noteworthy for a change?

Resources could be used to fix that half ass netcode and shitty match making.

My favorite. I'd main her

It's all about that one with the megaphone.

True. I like Chun Li being a police officer since she kinda reminds me of those old Jackie Chan films (just female).
I also noticed that the little girl, who is now a hacker, is the same one at the appears numerous times in Chun Li's cutscenes in Third Strike.

So if the story is anything to go buy, she gets kidnapped, then rescued by Chunners and then takes up fighting after Chun Li?

Completely agree. Capcom are chasing the casual crowd that don't care anymore. It's been 3 months since the game came out and unlike games such as Smash and Mortal Kombat, the casual scene drops in a pretty big way. If you don't have this kind of story mode available on launch, then those guys who play just for fun aren't going to buy to it. Even now if you go and buy the game, it still the original game with the original boxart which doesn't describe any where that there will be a big feature story.
It's a complete waste of Capcoms time and money when they should really be working on other more important areas like that horrendous loading time or [insert one of the other many flaws with this game].
Like it or not, but the only people that this game is there for is the competitive crowd. Just focus on the competitive scene because that's how the game was launched.

the game released without single player content and bombed.

focusing on the competituve scene will kill this franchise. casuals matter, and casuals just one content to play through.

The casuals are gone, the competitive scene is what will keep the game alive going forward.

But it didn't bomb, though.

Once the casuals leave, who is left? The people who are still playing it.

Story needed way more Urien.

Rashid was the only interesting new character, Fang was just annoying (F***ing Annoying New Guy confirmed), necalli was basically non existent in the story, and so was Laura.

I mean, I as expecting it to be dumb. And it delivered on that front I suppose. Better than nothing.

I hope they do another story for Season 2. Want to see what Gill and Urien will get up to.

I thought Necalli may have had some connection to Gill given his body and the way his hair looks, but nope.
