The State Department is reopening an internal investigation of possible mishandling of classified information by Hillary Clinton and top aides.

Spokesman John Kirby says the emails probe is restarting now that the Justice Department isn't pursuing a criminal prosecution. The State Department suspended its review in April to avoid interfering with the FBI's inquiry.

Kirby set no deadline for the investigation's completion.

Clinton was secretary of state until early 2013. Most of her top advisers left shortly thereafter.

But Kirby said this week former officials can still face "administrative sanctions." The most serious is loss of security clearances, which could complicate Clinton's naming of a national security team if she becomes president.

Beyond the Democratic front-runner, the probe is most likely examining confidants Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan and Huma Abedin.

Everyone gets a probe!!

(This had already been opened and halted so that FBI could finish their probe). Worst case scenario is that Hillary's people such as Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan and Huma Abedin could lose their security clearances if/when she becomes President. Which, like, why not).

This is ridiculous, and transparently partisan. They know they should just cut their losses and hope for good downticket results, but they'd rather play risk/reward with the possibility of Clinton being completely discredited than the smart thing and ensuring that they can keep both houses instead of just the House of Reps.

What?

The state department isn't run by the republicans.

Doesnt John Kerry have to sign off on any matters of security clearance? I doubt he will rubber stamp such a conclusion from the internal investigation.

I mean, this is a blatant move for the Repubs to try and make sure Clinton has a low voter turnout anda massive waste of resources (which isn't surprising, it's the Tea Pary Congress). Nothing more, nothing less. They know they aren't going to find anything, they're just hoping it'll generate bad headlines for Hillary as we draw nearer to November.

Yeah, to those freaking out, the case seems to be this: the State Dept started their (State) probe back when this email stuff began. Once the FBI started their (FBI) probe, State decided that, in order to not step on FBIs toes, they would postpone their (State) probe. Now that FBI is done with their (FBI) probe, State will finish doing their due diligence. This doesn't seem to be some continuation of the partisan witch hunt. Just the natural conclusion of the State Dept taking care of their lax email policies. Don't freak out.

Did you miss his second line, the State Department is not run by Republicans.

Well that ain't good

Thank you! It's pretty clear even from the 2nd paragraph in the OP that this is just following procedure to the end, and not the result of some partisan conspiracy. No reason for anyone to be worried.

Alright, I want this to end just as much as the next person. But trying to act like the State Department is solely run by a bunch of a Republicans and that this is about hurting her election chances instead of the very real fact that she showed carelessness and negligence(intended or not) and is up for the most position with access to even more classified info and documents is just silly and childish.

Hopefully it ends soon. Wonder if they throw some intern under the bus or something. Heh.

This goes along with exactly what the FBI director said today. He said that if it was his employees who did this they wouldn't be prosecuted but there would be consequences. There also would certainly be changes to procedures and regulations.

I see absolutely no issue with this.

They are just going to wrap it up quick, maybe sacrifice one of these people to satisfy the GOP and that will be the end of that.

Yeah, that's fair.

Jesus I feel bad for her staffers right now. At this point they are basically looking at the possibility of losing their ability to work in politics because they followed their bosses orders. I mean sure they chose not to question her decision to use a private server but they don't deserve the full punishment.

Yep.

The State Department has to finish its due diligence.

This is par for the course in any criminal investigation involving government agencies. The criminal case is closed and tossed back to the originating entity to determine what sanctions or remedies needs to be meted out. This is the expected immediate result of the doj declining criminal charges. No one should be surprised at this.
