Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Looks like I need to warm up the unofficial GAF server.

If you want your planet plugged into the server, back up the file and I'll dump it in.

So no more unstable stable right, don't need to push my way through random info to see which one I should play?

Right, after July 22nd, the game is out of beta and there should only be one version you ever play (unless they continue to do testing for future updates, but they haven't said anything yet).

Does anyone know if the save for the unstable 1.0 will be compatible when the official version comes out?

All saves will be compatible, apparently all that happens is if you have a per-existing save you will be locked out of content (story) from what's known.

Doesn't matter to me, I'm starting a fresh character for 1.0 Looking forward to experiencing it all anew, I haven't played in a year now other than a few times to hear the music, lol.

So the unstable branch right now is the full 1.0, but, buggy game?

Played it a bit, not too buggy. Your crew is still slow on attacking. Sometimes they are on the ball and a few seconds later they just stand there taking damage. Also, for some odd reason every npc forgot how to open the small gates. Can herd them like cattle. You think it is one npc but when you open the gate a flood of npcs will pop out. Looks wierd.

During today's stream they mentioned a character wipe. Not sure if that includes universes or unstable build content. Might be best to wait.

I don't mind a wipe. Forgot to backup my worlds on my old PC so I literally got nothing. Will be starting from complete scratch come 1.0

I'm hoping it's not a full wipe. I'm okay losing my character, I had planned to start from scratch for 1.0 anyway, just to experience the story / exploration / collection aspect as it was meant to be. But once that's over and the itch to build returns, here's some pretty crazy corners of the universe I spent some time building on that I'd like to be able to come back to.

Supernorn, any word on if the 1.0 wipe will include universes?

I've played unstable for at least 4 hours tonight. I gotta admit, they bound things together way better than I expected. Here are some spoiler free thoughts on it:

Crafting tables and table progression is a lot simpler and easy to understand. The tabs on them are 10x smarter and the UI is just way better. I also am much less confused on finding where an item is made, despite there being many tables.

Story progression not relying on self progression is a big deal. I hated the gear checks. The story and missions seem 100% optional. There is perhaps 1 mission you need to do to get your ship into interstellar shape.

Combat, especially melee with the 2h weapons seems much improved.

Planets have more biomes again, yay. And the first trek to the center of the planet wasn't bad either. Usually I found that part boring but it was okay this time around. Probably more fun for a first timer.

And just in general, I feel like a lot of little things, like a real introduction, more story elements and story progression, just made the world feel more alive and real and that just contributed to many other less tangible elements that just made things click a lot better.

How are guns? Is sand surfing back again? Sand surfing was the best part of the first version.

Spoilered changes sound all-around great.

How is performance, though? That was the biggest thing holding me back from sinking major time into it during the later beta releases. Like chugging or general choppiness while moving around, that sort of thing.

I've only gotten 1 shotgun so far and it was fairly weak so I didn't use it much. I don't know what sand surfing is.

On previous builds I was running it on a gtx 560 but on this PC I am only using a 9600 gt (ancient dx9 GPU) and I am still getting 60fps (1080p, fullscreen and windowed) most of the time. It hasn't dropped below 30fps. In some busy areas like the outpost I get round 45-50fps. Weather still seemed to be a performance hit.

It's also hard to compare because on the regular build you have the option of running it in opengl 64 bit which was always a big performance improvement for me. On unstable, I am not sure how to launch it in that mode since there isn't a launcher for it. Maybe there is a way I am missing.

Also, part of this time I was watching hulu/netflix in window mode. Some of the time I was playing fullscreen.

Thanks. I actually forgot about the 64-bit build; don't remember which I used back then. I'm going to assume it will perform better.

Now the biggest dilemma is choosing which species to use... again.

Excited to give this another go with 1.0 if I'm not too caught up in other things. Last time I really played was like 2014 or something, so I'm sure a lot has changed.

Oh wow, you are in for a treat then. The game has improved substantially since then. Honestly it's changed a lot since I last played too about a year ago.

Dreadwing is wrecking me. He is a crap ton harder. You will need crewmates and be well geared to take him down.

He was a challenge but I managed to take him down with titanium armor and a fire portal staff. BTW, fire portal staff is... simply awesome. I also used salve/bandage to keep my health up high, because even in titanium armor he packs a punch.

BTW, how do you even get crewmates? Is it just the same as before with the colony deed?

Seens deeds, and quest completion. I got a crazy ass floran with a tribal mask and a giant wrench by doing some quests for him to impress a floran girl he liked.

Doing quest for npcs on the planets no deed needed. Talk to them after completion and they might join. I am able to invite quite a few, but locked to just 2 members until I can upgrade my ship. They can take a beating for a while, just wish they created a ui for seeing their health and controlling them.

Will my unstable 1.0 character be compatible with stable 1.0? Progression wise that is? I'd love to get a headstart before GAF server goes up :D

Edit: I guess it's just because it's unstable, because the FPS is pretty much locked at 30 :P. Shouldn't be an issue with the final release I hope.

Locked at 30? Maybe you have forced vsync? I'm getting 60fps max.

No forced vsync, I still get variable FPS between 30 and 60. It just likes to stay at 30 for the most part. If it's vsync related it's nothing I can change, don't see any options in the game for it and I'm not forcing it via drivers.

Played stable for about 6 hours tonight. There's so much more shit underground to find, even compared to Live Stable. Background ore is a big one, but there's some legitimately huge biomes down there (I found a hive / jungle thing that just went on forever).

I think it's 24 hours before release.

Evilore's post says "Don't post your official thread earlier than the day of the game's release," but I'd say 24 hours falls within that window. If not, a mod can always close it up for a few hours.

How the heck do I make green dye? It says pick up blue or yellow dye, but I made them and I can't make my watering can.

Looking at the Wiki, it looks like you craft it at the Sewing Machine (Upgraded Spinning wheel), but... that doesn't seem right, so possibly a bug?
