Sony Santa Monica Studio Creatives

At Santa Monica Studio we're hiring in a major way, across all disciplines, for our next God of War game on the PlayStation 4. Santa Monica Studio Creatives is a series focusing on 4 unique individuals of our family whose journey to our studio is as inspiring as their creative talents within. While their stories are candid, raw, and anything but normal, their expert crafts and collaboration within our creative walls hits the heart of what matters most to our studio culture - the team is everything.

Still hiring in a major way? Damn, I'm getting concerned that this won't be out next year, which would be a shame.

However, I'm starting to notice that all of Sony's first party studios seem to be expanding dramatically. Naughty Dog is now a 300 men dev team, SSM will likely get much bigger soon. Not sure about GG, but since they are working on an open world RPG, I'm guessing the team would be massive. Wonder what they are all up to.

Wait a minute. They are talking about the God of War shown at E3, right? There's no way they're referencing a future God of War game when they say "next" God of War? Just a bit confused.

Thanks for the heads up ninja.

Edit: Damn, they always want someone with years of experience in a professional environment. A nykka can't catch a break. How can I get the experience if no one is willing to give it to me?

You ignore it and try to convince anyway. That is standard job searching for any field.

Just go ahead and apply. A good portfolio will get their attention even if it isn't for that position.

Didn't they lay off like 150 people a year or two ago?

Yup.

A few other ways is hopefully get a job thru a temp agency or volunteer. Both can help you get experience.

Internships is another way.

Do it, Blasian! The worst diligence is the one that is never done. You won't lose anything by trying.

"Years of experience" isn't our highest priority or a dealbreaker by any stretch. What we want is talent. If you have 1-year of experience but have the talent. knowledge, and willingness to learn, we'll absolutely open up the conversation. It's very difficult to find a diamond in the rough that type of person, but we have people who are full-time on our team now that we rolled the dice on for this very reason. It really depends on the role.

Check out our open positions http://sms.playstation.com/careers and if you see something you think you qualify for, regardless of "years of experience", don't let that stop you. You're welcome to drop me a line personally at sms@playstation.sony.com and reference this thread.

Our "What It Takes" series does a great job expressing what I said above, here is an example: http://sms.playstation.com/news/what-it-takes-env-artist/

Thanks!

You need the GAF Resume/CV writing service.

EXACTLY, and to confirm, we're hiring in a "big way" is really just to say, we're deep in to Production on God of War, and this is the first time in a very long time that we are ramping up the amount of creatives we need. We have a little over 20 roles open on the team, and every one is critical. We have an epic journey ahead and are excited to have finally unveiled our work from the past 3 years.

SSM seems like it would be a cool place to work.

GoW I thought was rumored for spring 2017 but could be their fall 2017 title? Never really know these days. Scope may have changed. But it seems they have a playable game from start to finish if they know it's all one continuous shot.

They still using same office that house 150 men? Sony need to get them a new office, it must be super crowded with 300 now.

Hey there, I just applied to the CM opening last week. With 12 years experience in the industry I'm hoping to get a response. I also have a beard as evidenced by my avatar if that helps. ;)

P.S. Loved the GoW show at E3, chatted with a few of you guys late one night walking back from one of the parties.

I believe Shinobi has pretty much confirmed that it's not coming out next year. At this point I'm expecting it to come out in March 2018. I guess we'll find out more at PSX later this year.

Hopefully SSM can tackle something new again once GoW ships. Such a shame Stig's game got cancelled, as it means they've not finished a non-GoW project since about, what, 2002?! I also expect Sucker Punch will grow a bit. I really hope Naughty Dog can develop something new as well, besides The Last of Us 2 of course. I think Druckmann and Straley are amazing, but the studio needs to enable other creators to lead their own projects as well.

EDIT - I know SSM co-develop/produce other games as well (i.e. Edith Finch, Journey, Gone to the Rapture), but I mean actually properly in-house developments.

Wow, Shinobi said that? Disappointing.
Sony yet again showed game too early? I thought Balrog said it's coming soon at E3.

Haha, no idea about this. I believe no one ever brought this up before.

That would suck. I was fully expecting it to be a 2017 title. Then again, almost every first party game from Sony has been delayed past the targeted year this gen. We'll see, I guess.

Also, I'm glad you seem to catch what I was hinting at. :p I do believe ND, at least, is working on more than one project at the moment. For now, a smaller team could be working on UC4 DLC while the larger team is working on the new game.

I think you guys are reading to much into this. With that demo they showed you couldn't have that with the majority of the game done. I believe this will be a holiday 2017 title.

Have you never heard of a vertical slice? Plus, we got a gameplay demo of Horizon last E3 and it's not coming out until early next year (about 18 months after release), which, if GoW will hit in early 2018, will be roughly the same timescale.

I'm hoping they put out making-off videos like they did with GoW Ascension, prior to release. Would love to see that shit, and without blurred monitors.
