Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

So I havnt updated my pc since I built it in 2012. I been using the gtx 690 for a while now and finally decided to upgrade my gpu. Been looking at and waiting for stock on a 1080. I was able to finally place a order for the evga 1080 ftw but have concerns about my cpu. Currently running a oc 3930k and wondering if I would have any bottleneck issues with it and the 1080?

Got an issue - random shutdowns, no warnings. Mostly during doom and Next Car Game. Power supply too weak (Antec Hi-Voltage Gamer 620w) or dust buildup that needs cleaning? Didn't have this issue at all with my GTX 670.

Thinking I might need more power, but I was sure 620w was enough...

620w better be enough because I'm planning to use a 600w :P

Also it's here! :o

Most of these cards require a 500W power supply so you should be fine, although it depends on what else it has to produce power for. Have a look at your Event Manager in Windows and see if you get any clues as to what's causing the problem. How old is your power supply and what 'medal' is it rated at..? Bronze, Silver or Gold..? The medal denotes how efficient the power supply is, if it's just a Bronze PSU then that might be the cause of the problem. If the PSU is quite old it may be on its way out, perhaps..?

Bronze rated at 84. I'm gonna do some dusting and hopefully that'll be it. I don't mind buying another PSU,but damn I'm not looking forward to wiring everything back up again.

Edit: event manager just says "windows has shut down unexpectedly"

That was me over the weekend, installing a new PSU (Corsair RM750x). I was having problems with my old 550W whenever I OC'd my CPU and ran a game that really pushed both CPU and GPU, I was getting random crashes and reboots. I haven't really put the new one through its paces yet, though.

Considering I intentionally bought a GPU too big for my case I've got a lot of work ahead of me.. :(

I wanted a challenge at the time but right now I just wanna veg out and play Doom.

One advantage of some of the parts shipping out before the card (it was on backorder).. While I was in there putting in the new PSU and HDD, I moved the OS drive down into the lower hard drive cage and removed the top cage completely, so it gives me plenty of room for the length of the new card. And, since I needed more room down below for the new PSU, I moved that fan up into the space vacated by the old drive cage, so there's even more air moving into that area of the case where the card will be. No worries about heat and air flow. :)

So I'm looking at a 'Palit NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB JetStream' which is around 2 to 3 cm shorter than my current Gigabyte Windforce 980. That's good to see. Looks like this'll be the one for me as it's sub-£600 on a few sites.

Depends if you were playng on DOS or Windows and prior to 3D graphics
I remember in 1994 there was a review for SVGA cards, comparing DOS and Windows performance. Cards with S3 chips were the best for MS-DOS and would cost around 200-300$.

But for Windows and general tasks, those cards were the best and would cost 700-800$

In the review such high end cards had inferior MS-DOS performance.
The irony is that the 1100$ Number 9 Imagine 128 model had the worst DOS perfomance but was perfect in everything else.

Thanks for the info! Its really interesting and WOW at those prices...

Trying to get your hands on one of these in the Netherlands is nigh impossible and it's bumming me out. Sold my 970 a couple of weeks ago. Bit too soon it seems.

Once the prices and stock issues have sorted themselves out I'm looking at getting an EVA 1080 FTW but after seeing how big some of the cards are I'm wondering if it'll fit in my case? The case is a NZXT H440.

Had to downgrade my order from Strix OC to the Non-OC model, Asus apparently has problems manufacturing enough OC cards to meet the demand. Got it for a "special price" at least. I hope overclocking it manually gets me to around 1900mhz.

Huh, I might finally get a 1080 before the end of the week.
I've had an EVGA 1080 SC ordered for a month now, shop was supposed to get stock three weeks ago but still hasn't received them. Distributors fucked up pretty bad apparently. In the end they offered to switch me to the Gigabyte G1 without charging for the difference.

So how does Pascal's boost clock work? My Zotac card is labled as 1721/1860MHz but in game it actually boosts up to nearly 2.0GHz with no overclocking applied.

So much for the GTX1070/1080. I bought a Zotac 980 Ti Omega for 370€ on Amazon today (Prime Day Germany)^^ It will take a while until you get a good 1070 for that price and the Omega should easily do 1300+Mhz.

FTW is the standard 10.5" length. It's a little wider than a reference board, but it's usually length that gets you into trouble with a lot of cases rather than width.

Amazon sent me a delay notice for my 1080 ROG Strix. ):

I haven't received one (yet), but my order wasn't dispatched yesterday as Amazon said it would be and I've now a vague "soon"... which is practically the same thing, although the tracking page insists that the package will still arrive within the estimated period.

Same as Maxwell, the rated boost clock is somewhat of a minimum it will run on in worst case scenarios. A lot depends on the cooling and the type of load though. It's rather normal for custom OC editions to constantly run above the rated boost out of the box.

I still cannot believe that my $649 card is going for $809, barely used. If I was any less of an individual I'd put my card up for sale, pop in my old 970 and enjoy that sweet profit. But that would be pretty scummy.

Everyone happy with their GTX1080? As in no problems so far with it?
I'm receiving mine but I'm already hearing problems of flickering with Gsync 144hz monitors amongst other issues.

Yeah it was like that before for me as well. You importing from Amazon US?

I had the flickering issue and it was fixed with the latest drivers although some still have it. The solution was to either set it to 120hz or choose maximum performance in the control panel.

The only problem I have is the well known 1080 displayport/Vive incompatibility (had to switch to HDMI).

Omfg!! Been trying to get a ( ideally non-founders ) GTX 1080 for weeks now, and I randomly check late last night on newegg and totally secured a 650$ gigabyte G1 version! It's packing now and they are sold out already hours later.

To fellow hunters: try checking newegg early mornings and late nights to catch resupplys!! And keep following your dreams.

The card will fit in you case and will have some space. The max size for your case is 294mm with HDD Cage and the FTW is 267mm.

My loins are ripe with excitement. Does anyone here game in 4k with a 1080? I am curious about what to expect. I am currently running 2x GTX 680s ( been waiting to upgrade for a long time.. ), and have dabbled in 4k gaming on those. Had Dirt Rally running in 4k at ~30fps ( it was ~18fps with a single 680 ).

I am okay if this thing doesn't quite yet stomp out 4k games on ultra at 60fps, but I am curious about what others have experienced.

Using my my 1080 to play in 4K or the the highest 1440 resolution and been suitably impressed, I think it depends on each game, and how much you want to tweak settings.

I haven't had much time to test older games, due to work and such. The worst performing game was The Technomancer at around 35 FPS on 4k (Max Settings), it was playable enough, but just dropped the resolution and hey presto 60 fps. But I have not have the time to tweak it yet, Forza 6 Apex ran rather well as does Lego:Star Wars on 4K, but I am happy to knock the resolution to get smooth until have more time to optimize games.

I am not that much of a FPS junkie, partly due to my eyesight and playing games on older systems over the years.

Any word on the street about availability of MSI GTX 1080 Sea Hawk EK X's?

They popped in at and out of stock a few times last week. I managed to get the X. I'd sign up for alerts at Newegg and Nowinstock.net, and I bet you can score one soon. Luckily, these stay in stock longer than most of them because of how specialized/expensive they are.

After a few days with my EVGA Superclocked, I love it. I'm not gonna argue anyone who says it's overkill for my 1080p HTPC setup, but knowing I can just max out every game and not have to worry is awesome.

What is the general consensus on which 1080 to get?

I am also wondering this. I was googling around just now for any sort of comparison between the models and was not finding a whole lot.

Of course we know this: The Founders Edition cards were kind of an early adopter edition that was ~100$ more and are the baseline ( read: slowest ) clock speeds for the full 1080 line. So: Try and get a not-Founders Edition to get something cheaper and potentially faster ( of course, this is where build quality and other shit starts to play out ).

The only problem I've heard about is that with the latest driver update 1080s can't boost when playing VR games. That'll get sorted out with the next update I expect.

I've had the EVGA SC and the Strix, and the Strix blew it away from a cooling standpoint. almost 14C cooler under load. No fault of Asus but my Strix wasn't stable under any OC settings, so since I bought the OC version, I decided to return it. The only real difference at this point is based on temps, everything else is luck of the draw. I think the Strix has the lowest as far as air cooled cards.

thought id post this in here since it should apply even if i have a 1070

so im running fallout 4 at 1280 at ultra settings and only getting about 30 fps

i have an i7 5820, 16 gb ram and obviously the 1070

I got the MSI gtx 1080 armor OC edition, does that mean I don't have to overclock it since it is already factory OC?

So, I wanted to use PC PartPicker to see if my rig would be compatible with all the GTX 1080's. I just checked the EVGA FTW one and for my case - NZXT Phantom 410 - it says
The NZXT Phantom 410 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 305mm long, but video cards over 230mm may block drive bays. Since the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card is 267mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

So do I need to open up the case to check?
Also what do I need to do to check the 8+8 pin power type? My motherboard is MSI x99S SLI Plus ATX LGA2011-3 and power supply is Corsair CX 750W. Don't really know how the 10+2 power phase affects things, either.

Just open the box up and have a look. I would expect you would be okay, but you could be fucked over like me. Just have a look. Better confirmed than disappointed when it arrives.

Yeah. If I'd known I may find myself in this situation, I would have kept my G1 pre-order, but since the STRIX was explicitly listed as in stock, I cancelled it immediately after placing my order.

What is the general consensus on which 1080 to get?

I'm not sure there is consensus yet. My advice at this point is to choose something within your budget that is cold and quiet so that in the case you can do some overclocking, it won't be loud and it won't throttle due to temperature. Overclocking looks to be quite random at this point, where even a Founders Edition can be clocked very high if you get lucky.

The cards above have popped up a few times in this thread and seem to be pretty solid options overall. Personally, I bought the Palit Super Jetstream (similar to the Palit Gamerock and the Gainward Pheonix GLH - all three cards are larger than regular cards) and I'm quite happy with it. I've had decent results overclocking it but I don't want to post results until I've run some more test. There is also the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X which is a very popular card but I don't know anything about it besides that. I think that the Zotax Amp Extreme is the most powerful 1080 card out of the box if you just want to plug and play. There are some cards that aren't on this list.

Dude! Thanks for the info! What are those card that are just name "Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080" though? Are those founders editions? They look to be the best in the graphs above, but that is counter to what my thinking was regarding the lower clock of the FEs.. Also, what is a 1070 doing in there blasting out half the 1080s?!

EDIT: Upon re-reading your post.. it looks like these may be max overclocking specs?

I picked up the Gigabyte G1 1080 cause it was in stock for a full 5 mins on newegg last night. I hope I made an ok decision!

We finished my girlfriend's PC this morning, had been waiting on EK pre-filled water block.

This is a really impressive water cooling setup, using EK's 360 Predator radiator and supremacy CPU block, along with a 1080 FE water block, both items come prefilled (meaning you don't have to attach any hosing or fill it up). The hardest part of this setup was putting the GPU block on, which is rather easy. Once installed you just unclip the quick release on each hose set and attach them together inline. When opening the quick release they auto close so the water doesn't leak out.

Extremely impressed with this whole setup, with her 5820K (@4.5Ghz) and 1080 on full load (IBT and Valley respectively), the highest the CPU got to was 70C and GPU spiked to 42C. It's also very quiet, next time around I am considering ditching my custom loop for something like this, highly recommended :D
