what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Random thread hijack but does Xeno X's combat get more interesting than MMO'ish hotbar combat? On a keyboard this works for me but using the Pro controller I'm having real issues.

For the most part it's hot bar combat . You do have to consider your position in relation to the enemy and you have to hit the timing circle QTE to heal and get more meter for your super duper special attack.

The fun of the system is the pre battle setup and planning, the execution is secondary. It's hot bar combat with some QTE timing. Overall, I liked it a lot. It's enganging.

I'm currently playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions which I have a lot of fun with. Quality Atlus RPGs that nicely scratch that itch for a classical RPG with good systems.

Once I'm done with it I'll beat Xenoblade X which I unfortunately did not enjoy as much as the original.

And then maybe Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth.

Just wrapped up about an hour of Trails SC. Finished all the post chapter 2 sidequests and now on to the third city.

Every time I play this game I'm reminded of how great it is and I wonder why I don't play it more... and then I remember, it's on my family/wife's laptop and I don't get much time of having it all to myself. I've seriously considered just buying a Vita so I can have my own dedicated Trails SC device, but I'm actually trying to purchase LESS video gaming devices and software in my life.

I heard Chapter 3 is kind of a slog like Ch.2, then the game picks up. Hopefully I can finish it this month, as I just finished my other main game, Zero Time Dilemma, last night.

It's mostly iterative, it adds a few new tricks like secondary cool downs (cool downs for a more powerful version of arts) and soul voices (party members calling for a type of art). Though it does remove ultimates and then once you get your skell the changes just get neglected.

Planning on buying a PS Vita (maybe the Persona 4 DAN bundle) and Persona 4 Golden... so I'll be playing that soon. Sometimes I feel like I should start with Persona 5, but I also feel like going backwards in terms of graphical quality would be weird for some reason.

PS Vita Slim or Fat?

Just started TMS#FE for Wii-U, so far so good.

On the go i'm playing BRAVELY SECOND.

I tried playing Mind Zero for the vita, but I quickly gave up, just wasn't feeling it. Planning on getting Persona 4 and buying FF 5 and 6 on it.

Yeah I have my hands full lol

The chapter where you go back to Grancel (I think that's chapter 3) is a bit of a slog but it's got a stunning conclusion. Then, things pick up for the most part, although chapter 7 gets a bit bland again (
go through 4 long, repetitive dungeons but at least the bosses are quite the challenge
). Some of the later boss fights are also extremely challenging and drawn-out affairs. Such a wonderful game.

I'm playing more SO5 and got to
Der Suul
, this battle is really souring me on the game. Went from "hey, this isn't bad, what are reviewers talking about!", to "this game's got a lack of budget and scope, lame sidequests, uninteresting story but reviewers were still to harsh", now to "fuck this shit". Still gonna stick with it though, maybe grind out a few levels tonight and re-configure my roles.

Slim imo.

The canon ending is the
third character
so you might want to replay at least once to see what it happens.

I finished with all three of them and it gets tiring.

I'll probably get around to it eventually, but for now I just beat it as Hugo and am satisfied.

Currently I am about an hour in to a few games: Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, Trails in the Sky SC, Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

Not sure if I want to continue one of those or play something else.

Just finished Star Ocean 5 and honestly was majorly disappointed with it. I said some bad things about SO4, but the core game systems were really good. The story and especially characters were absolutely atrocious though. While Star Ocean 5's characters don't hit the lows 4 did, as a whole it's a vastly inferior game.

I need a JRPG's pallete cleanser. I was planning on waiting till I Am Setsuna for that. I nearly bought Tales of Zestiria for £16, but it waa out of stock by the time I got to it. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing with the things I've heard about that game.

Dragon Quest 5 on the ipad. Liking it so far, but only a couple hours in.

Remember to click the talk button after everything. After you talk to any person in town, go to the overworld after every event, go to a different floor in any dungeon, your characters always have something different to say. It adds so much.

That's my favorite part of DQ 4 and 5.

Just got finished with Ys I.

That final boss is something else. Really really hard in comparison to everything else in the game.

Playing Pokemon HeartGold for the first time currently, does that even count?

Also: Xenoblade Chronicles... it's been a year now that i play on and off but everytime i play i still enjoy myself so i guess that's a good thing and i will keep playing until i finish it :)

Parasite Eve - the gameplay holds up a lot better than I expected from a PS1 game with no remaster. The Vita makes playing this sort of game a great experience, too, since I can suspend/resume when there's no phone around.

Done with .hack//Outbreak!

Total time spent between Infection/Mutation/Outbreak = 11:11:12. Yup I'll totally clear the series in under 20 hours, but just how far under?

There are tons, they send you to and end of the dungeon just to talk to an NPC and sometimes doesn't even advance the story much other than "go to check this other area, it has something interesting, I swear". Or that stupid obligatory sub-quest with Piros.

There is even a dungeon in which you go with Black Rose to check if there is anything interesting and you literally find nothing but a wall at the end lol. The story is pretty thin in this Infection.

I wouldn't even mind it that much if the dungeons weren't so bad.
Every rpg has some places you gotta visit that may seem pointless or don't progress the story (but exist to level you up maybe?). I think at least some of 'em in Infection are playing off the whole mystery / rumors angle. Not everything ya read online is real! Piros is prolly an unwitting "plant" used to delay Kite and the others. Past the first game story dungeons generally get less long, as in average 3 floors deep instead of 5.

Shining Force II. For whatever reason I think I like the first more. I don't like wandering the World Map that much.
I like it less than the first simply cause of the less outrageous stat gains ya can get. +1 / +2 practically level across practically every character is sooooo unexciting.

Oh cool, I didn't know that. Will do, and thanks for the tip!

I've finally picked up my Skies of Arcadia play-thru on Dreamcast recently, and am falling in love with the game all over again. Recently finished Moonstone Mountain in Ixa'Takan, and now I'm off to find the lost city of Rixis!

The game looks so damn clean on my Bravia using a VGA box too. Don't think I've ever seen this game looking so sharp and clear. This game really just impresses me so much with it's ambition, the shear breadth of the world still feels so incredible. The main cast feel like old friends, these characters are just so damn likable. Airship battles are so much more cinematic than I recall. I was taken aback by how impressive they looked. The camera angles and framing looks fantastic, even today.

But man, I honestly must have the patience of a saint, because the random encounter rate is so insane hahaha. I do love hearing the Dreamcast have a damn heart attack, warning me before each random battle. It's pretty hilarious. Very fun game to play while smoking weed. When the enemy has the advantage, and I gotta wait for all their actions, there is no more perfect time to load a bowl, or take a hit.

Aika truly is my goddess, thank god for Lambda Burst.

I've been playing Xenoblade X since December and I'm still having a blast. I love everything about it, except for the awful dialogue.

Played Tokyo Mirage Sessions for a few hours and got bored. Game is good, just not the kind of RPG I like.

After a few months away, I resumed playing Trails in the Sky. It excels exactly where Xeno X fails: it has excellent dialogue! Game gets a bit too samey after a few days, so I leave it alone for a few weeks, but I always come back.

Tales of the Abyss on 3DS XL. Story is very good, and combat is not bad with the FoF mechanic, but hard to use. Need to figure out how to properly utilize them.

Just gave up on Star Ocean 5. The first couple hours of the game made me think the reviews were way too harsh on it. But after spending more time with it...I just didn't care about anything. Bland characters, bland story, little explanation as to why you should care about what the story is giving you. Some annoying design choices make the game part more annoying than the other games too.

So sad.

Seems like a lot of people feel this way about the game. I really want to buy it simply because it looks so pretty, but I always hear bad things about the game. Guess I'll just hold off for the bargain bin, or pray they update it to fix some things. Maybe they will make a Star Ocean 5.1 or something.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE on Wii U and Fire Emblem Fates on 3DS. Finished Birthright a while ago and now I'm gnawing on Conquest before I move on to Revelations. Both games are pretty dope, not sure which one I like better.

Fire Emblem Fates is a great continuation of Awakening, which was in some regards a step back compared to previous ones. Birthright is still pretty much in that vein but a bit better thanks to the new mechanics. I'm about 2/3 through Conquest and it might just be my favourite FE campaign, certainly up there. Interesting map designs, more varied tasks and it's properly challenging.

TMS #FE caught me pretty off guard. I still think some of the designs are questionable and it often feels like a poor man's Persona but there's one area where it absolutely tops it and that's combat. It's just infinitely more enjoyable than One More, which has gotten a bit stale by now. Almost done with Ch 3 and I can't wait to dig in more.

Playing through Final Fantasy 7 on Vita. Am only up to the Shinra building. I forgot how much silly stuff is in this game. I wonder how they will handle the cross-dressing part of the game in the remake.

I just did Wiseman section in Mutation.

I had to go at the end of a dungeon to meet him. Then do another dungeon to get an item for him. Then go all the way to the old dungeon to meet him again.

If this is not padding, I don't know what it is.

Love this game so much. Played it on Dreamcast and Gamecube. One of my all time favourites and I want a Remaster so badly. This and the Xenosaga trilogy are the ones I want more than anything else.

So sad.

Highly doubt they'll update it. The game feels painfully low budget while playing, and they didn't bother to fix some of the issues like the camera bouncing between Japanese and Western releases. I don't understand this idea of bringing a franchise back to test the waters and just throwing it into the wind without giving it a chance to succeed. Either give it a proper go and if it doesn't work out Square can at least say they tried, but they just half assed it. I can't even say I'm glad they gave us one more game since I was massively underwhelmee by it. If they just wanted to gauge interest I'd have rather had a port of Star Ocean 2 or a remaster of Star Ocean 3.

Such a disappointment.

From all of those RPGs you listed, I still haven't played Shadow Hearts. The other three are quite long and can get tiring. I love Trails SC and Skies of Arcadia, two of my favorite RPGs ever, but both take a while to get going.

Baten Kaitos I never finished. Stopped in the last dungeon and got extremely tired of it. Beautiful game, cool story, but the battle system never quite hooked me.

You should give Origins a go, it's much better than 1 and even the battle system is improved. (Everything is super-fast)

Is Adventures of Mana good? I need an jrpg with a good story and satisfying combat in my life right now.. Either PS4 or a Vita-game.

Yes. Worth playing just for the music. However it is a game boy game and so is very simple in both story and combat. It's fun and relaxing to play. Nothing serious.

Closest thing I would compare it to is Links Awakening.

Playing Star Ocean 5 now that I've finished Odin Sphere. It's pretty average. Nothing stellar, but nothing terrible either.

Yeah it's sad. I'm pretty forgiving to SO, too. There's a certain charm and vibe I get from them that I don't get in other JRPGs. I probably would have even liked SO4 overall had it not been for a few things.

If they do a SO6, I'll still keep tabs on it. Won't be there for day 1, though.
