Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Dude! Thanks for the info! What are those card that are just name "Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080" though? Are those founders editions? They look to be the best in the graphs above, but that is counter to what my thinking was regarding the lower clock of the FEs.. Also, what is a 1070 doing in there blasting out half the 1080s?!

EDIT: Upon re-reading your post.. it looks like these may be max overclocking specs?

I picked up the Gigabyte G1 1080 cause it was in stock for a full 5 mins on newegg last night. I hope I made an ok decision!

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The first image shows decibel values so lower is better. The card that's simply marked as Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 is the Founders Edition (or the reference card) which runs at stock clock speed. As you can see, aftermarket cards tend to be quieter because they have different cooling setups and more fans.

The second image shows the performance of the cards out of the box in relation to the Founders Edition. The Founders Edition is the baseline at 100% and the Zotac AMP Extreme is at 117,9%, or 17,9% faster.

The Gigabyte G1 looks to be a fine choice.

Welp just found out my card emits a audible buzzing noise under high clocks, but only in certain scenarios, like 3DMark and Overwatch, the rest games have been fine, shall I RMA it or live through it? Thinking about locking framerate to 60 in OW to see if it still persists.

It's coil whine, think of it as a feature that your card is being pushed, they all do it to some degree with it being more noticeable with water cooling as you don't have the fan drowning the noise out.

You made a fine decision. If it fits in your case it's good to go. Most of the cards are the same minus some lower temps and slightly high clock speeds. The manufacturer doesn't seem to matter in most cases, it's silicon lottery. Congrats and enjoy. Hope u get a boost to 2200 and make us all jealous af.

I always thought coil whine is more like a high pitched noise not buzzing (never dealt with one before). Think I'll just lower the clocks in Overwatch, it's an overkill in that game anyway at 1080p.

Sometimes it buzzes sometimes it screeches (like a digital scream), if it's only doing it when the card is being used (e.g. in a game) that's what it will be.

We finished my girlfriend's PC this morning, had been waiting on EK pre-filled water block.

This is a really impressive water cooling setup, using EK's 360 Predator radiator and supremacy CPU block, along with a 1080 FE water block, both items come prefilled (meaning you don't have to attach any hosing or fill it up). The hardest part of this setup was putting the GPU block on, which is rather easy. Once installed you just unclip the quick release on each hose set and attach them together inline. When opening the quick release they auto close so the water doesn't leak out.

Extremely impressed with this whole setup, with her 5820K (@4.5Ghz) and 1080 on full load (IBT and Valley respectively), the highest the CPU got to was 70C and GPU spiked to 42C. It's also very quiet, next time around I am considering ditching my custom loop for something like this, highly recommended :D

So is this kind of like the Corsair H100i but one of the cables disconnects so you can connect it to the GPU waterblock as well? Does this allow you to bypass getting a pump and reservoir and doing a full water cooling setup and the water goes CPU -> GPU -> Radiator?

If so, that is really cool! I have the Corsair H100i and have been looking at custom water cooling so I can water cool the GPU, but if this exists and works well I will have to give it a shot. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

The only time I've gotten coil whine out of my current card (680) is when it's pushing framerates that are beyond ridiculous. Like that one test in 3DMark that's designed to test mobile GPUs.. I was pushing something like 3000fps and the card was screeching like a banshee. But anything at or around my refresh rate, even at 144Hz or under heavy load, is fine. I'll be listening for it on the new card, for sure, but I'm not expecting it.

And Newegg finally deigned to actually ship my FTW today, the one they'd charged me for last week and has been sitting in "Packaging" for five goddamn days.

Yep it's exactly that, it has a high quality pump (DDC) with res mounted on top of the radiator. The quick disconnects are very high quality fittings and have a really solid connection. The kit you initially buy is the EK predator with either 240 or 360mm radiator and then EK sell all of their blocks with an option to have them prefilled with hoses attached (with the quick disconnects to plug inline with the predator). I would put it between AIO and Custom, and there is nothing stopping you adding more radiators etc to the mix to make it full custom if you so desire.

Amazing, didn't know EK basically made an AIO.

That's incredible. Will probably pick this up once I can get my hands on a GTX 1080. Question, is the backplate needed/worth it?

Also does anyone know if the Predator 360 would fit in a Fractal Arc Midi R2? The website says no for the Arc Mini R2, but doesn't list the Midi. I emailed support, but curious if anyone has experience with that case and the Predator 360.

Not sure if the back plate does more than just look neater/nicer, you do apply thermal tape in a few places so it would help spread the heat better but no idea if there are real world benefits from this. The case we put the 360 in was a Fractal R5, it said we couldn't mount it like we did (standing up in the front) but were able to, so I would ask around. Best place to start would be looking through this huge thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1566468/ek-predator-club-discussion-thread

Newegg did that to me. They took a week and a half getting a card to me, despite upgraded shipping and rush processing. There were people that ordered in the same 3 minute "in stock" span I did, got their shit next day. I refused delivery and it felt good.

lol, that's rough. Have you replaced it yet? I have a hunch that that'll have a better bring about a better feeling.

Anyone with a SeaHawk AIO yet? Mine is coming in tomorrow, but I'd love to pass the time with some impressions.

Doh caught me editing.. Yeah I had the same card in hand 1 day after Newegg would have. Had a SeaHawk order in at Amazon but wound up going with FTW. Card is great, though I don't think they differ much.

Oh nice! I've had the EVGA SC, which was really hot for me 76C-78C under load (with my case fans at max). Then Strix OC, which couldn't run at any of the Asus OC settings, but ran icy at 62C. Now I am waiting on the Seahawk, which will be the end of the road for me.

Holy shit. It's the middle of July.
I just want my EVGA ACX. Should've kept my original FTW order. I need to call Amazon and make sure my 20% off is still going to happen. I shoulda just bought a 980ti a long long time ago. This isn't worth $128. I'm about to finish an XCOM 2 campaign entirely on integrated graphics.

Anyone in the EU Step Up queue heard anything from Evga yet? Saw the SC was in stock a couple of weeks ago (card we were upgraded to) so thought we might hear something soon.

So, which would be better to keep, the Strix or FTW?

Through a series of ridiculously stupid events, I have both on the way to me and I don't know which I should keep.
NewEgg may also be sending me a replacement EVGA SC if they have stock =S
. From what I can gather from reviews, the Strix offers better cooling and noise levels, but FTW is still pretty good and comes with EVGA's unrivaled customer support.

Side note: I might have one or two unneeded 1080s in my possession in the next few weeks, and I'd be willing to sell them at cost + shipping if anyone is interested. Nothing concrete now, as I don't have the cards in hand, but I will let those interested know as things develop.

Was in a similar situation, I decided to hold onto the FTW because I just really like its design. It's not like there will be a major performance difference anyway + potential stepup if the Titan rumor is true.

Finally got my 1080 (Seahawk X) and got it installed. Took some finagling to mount the radiator since it is smaller than the one I had on my 390. Only got to to do a little testing but so far Im very happy with the performance over my 390. Im primarily a 1080p gamer and obviously ultra everything at that res, but I got the card specifically for VR, specifically games like Dirt and Assetto Corsa. Now things seem to be buttery smooth on the Vive (would get slight stuttering with the 390). Still need to do some more tweaking (likely OC) but so far it seems to run far cooler than my previous card and whisper quiet. Hope to update Revive and try Dirt tonight.

Nice, could you post your out-of-the-box boost clocks when you can? I had to change my order to non oc strix and I'm already questioning that decicion.

Yeah, I don't know if I'll get to installing it today. Do I just run Afterburner to get these numbers? All cards I've had in the past I just install and don't do anything else.

Congrats and thanks for posting that. Do you have an AIO CPU cooler? If so, where did you mount the two radiators? I have an h100i and the Seahawk coming today and I'm trying to decide how to set that up.

It's okay, no rush. Yeah you can read it from afterburners or gpu-z's graphs after running a game or benchmark.

Not sure how much my setup will help. I have a Cougar QBX itx case that I modded to make things fit. My CPU is on air (i5 6600k OC'd) and runs pretty cool. My 390 had an Arctic Hybrid III(?) if I remember correctly and I needed to custom mount it where the HD bays were(relocated SSD and HDD to the space under the front panel) Things are very tight.

Basically something like this setup
CougarQBX_029_642_fafe8.JPG

GPU fan on the right above the PSU, CPU has a noctua cooler on the left and easily fills that space. Granted I couldnt use the stock mounting tray they have folded up for the GPU cooler. I ended up cutting that half off and making a mount for the radiator and fan to raise it a bit off the PSU for better airflow.

Got my GTX 1080 Palit GR Premium. Damn this card is a beast, so quiet and running cool. I instantly tried Killing Floor 2, without the Nvidia Gib stuff on ultra @ 1440 I was rocking 130-140fps in solo mode. Nvidia effects takes it down to 100fps and worse when you're killing stuff.

I honestly don't know if I'll get a 1080Ti when it comes out, cause at 1440p this thing rocks just about everything cold. 4K though, not smooth enough for my taste... I'm sure I can play Divinity, Zombie Army Trilogy and other little games but 4K is definitely out of reach when it comes to AAA smooth gaming on 1 card, tried The Witcher 3 and can't get over the sluggishness of it all. Thing is though it does look pretty good on the 50" 4K TV running at 1440p.

Very cool setup! Wow are you just like so into Graphics cards that you can drop coin to go from gtx 1080 to 1080ti? I only update like every 4th gen lol

Nah I just spare money and I pretty much don't go on holiday like most people do here in France haha. Also resell value usually is good if you know what you're doing, for example I didn't have to fork so much for my 980Ti seeing as I sold my 970's 300€ each.

Funny thing though is I realize I don't game so much... after getting my card, I just ran pretty much every game I had left installed to see how this thing held up and now well that's it... Really need BF1 to release.
A shame Rockstar didn't come up with a RDR remaster on pc as I'm enjoying myself revisiting the title on the Xbox One.

I see! Rad. Yeah I also wish that RDR would hit PC.. First things I am planning on playing on my 1080: Dirt Rally VR, Elite: Dangerous VR, and going to attempt and see how well GTA V can run on my 4k screen!

How are people's experiences with coil whine? Considering returning my 1070 for a 1080 because mine whines to the point I don't like it on my living room itx rig.

Just checked on Amazon expecting nothing as usual, but Gigabyte G1's just went up for pre-order and delivery next week. I jumped on it immediately...

Hope for a nice upgrade from my 970 for 21:9 gaming...

A lot less than my Zotac 970 on a Inno3D 1080. I only noticed it in loading screens with 1000+ FPS.

Can't say I'm hearing any coil whine really. Though, I play with headphones so that could be part of it.

My biggest issue is after ending a game session, my Palit SuperJetstream keeps spinning up and down for about 10 minutes, instead of just having it's 40% fanspeed for another few minutes after to cool down completely. I guess I could fix it by changing fan curves, but I'm just too lazy.

I have the 1080 Palit Super Jetstream and so far I haven't heard any coil whine. I even tried to induce it by pushing out a ridiculous amount of frames in Furmark but nothing.

On Newegg, I see MSI is releasing a 1080 gaming Z with a core clock of 70-100 mhz over gaming x depending on whatever mode gaming Z's core clock is being advertised with. For $20 more dollars, does 70 mhz provide any reasonable performance increase?

My card should be shipping from Amazon later today... finally :(

Next time I'll just pay for shipping lol

I one clicked ordered (Prime) a ASUS GTX 1080 STRIX from Amazon last Thursday. I was supposed to get it yesterday but it sat at "Not yet shipped' up until the last possible minute... after which they pushed the delivery date to this Monday.

I wonder if it's ever going to ship. :-/

I'd feel a bit better if they even just gave me an estimate. >;

I mean if you don't already have one and it's just $20 then why not.. But no, 70Mhz isn't going to change anything.. It'll be a few percent faster "guaranteed" but likely no different in practice.
