Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

yeah, the answer to "how do I get a strong X" is "get to level 20 and hope you hatch one from an egg".

How do you most easily get to lvl 20 though? I have been stuck at lvl 8 the last few days, and I'm catching all the Pokemon I can and evolving my Pidgeys and what not to earn that XP.

Haha this random guy and I spent half an hour battling each other constantly swapping ownership of our local gym.

It was just me and him 20 metres apart sharing knowing glances, while cars drove past wondering what on earth we were doing.

They knew what we were doing.

Don't evolve them just any old time! Best way to level is to just a) catch every Pidgey, Weedle, and Caterpie you see, b) catch anything you've never caught before, and c) catch things you don't see often even if you already have one in case you want candies for them in the future. When you have ~45 Pidgeys ready to evo (so ~540 candy), use a Lucky Egg (you get one free at level 9) and evolve them all under the influence of the Lucky Egg. It'll get you 45000 EXP, which is enough to skip 3 levels in one go. Then just rinse and repeat.

Until level 20, the game is basically about collecting Pidgey then bursting them all in one go.

I went to the city today. Live in the suburbs, no Pokestops in walking distance or anything.
Before and after:

Caught and evolved so much shit, my inventory filled up, there were non-stop lure moduled pokestops and people fighting for gyms everywhere. So crazy. Went from like level 7 or 8 to 13.
If only I could have that experience without having to drive for an hour though :I

I need 540 Pidgeys candies? Holy shit.

If you've been saving them up, you'll hit that naturally by about lvl 15 (assuming you;ve been catching all the Pidgey you can see).

And yeah, the early game is basically just a grind. You can't invest in any Pokemon because they become so easily replaced. I hope they change that in future versions.

So the different color rings when attempting to catch a mon represent difficulty of the catch? Why do they same pokemon somtimes have differenct colors? (I just caught a rattata that had a yellow ring; I'm not that drunk yet)

Well, I have 1 Pidgey now. Im lvl 8. I'm going on a Pidgey hunt tomorrow.

You can do the same trick with far less but it's less productive

That said the cost of waiting until you have 540 candies may outweigh the benefit of ranking up quickly

Personally I chose to rank up about 25 Pokemon in one go for the 30k I got for that ( I evolved Pokemon I hadn't evolved before for that boost + a bunch of pidgeys/ rattata/ weedle etc

There are pros and cons to both approach and in the long run the longer you wait the more levels you can skip all at once but I was keen to get to about level 18 quickly just to be viable on gym battles and more quickly get more powerful eggs and so on

if they have high CP relative to your level they are more difficult to catch.

Yes, rings represent difficulty. Green is the easiest. Red is the hardest. I think there are only 3 color rings.

yeah, i catch everything I see except fliers (I mean Pidgey is a flying-type but it doesn't actually fly and sit back from the camera so doesn't count). Zubat is just a massive waste of time and Pokeballs.

Is it normal for Vaporeon to gain +40cp per power up? Or is this something that increases with trainer level? I am level 15.

I see it's normal. For some reason I was under the impression that Flareon had the fastest CP curve of the three.

I wonder if Niantic is going to start doing story events like they do with Ingress. One of my favorite things about Go is its lack of story. It's all about the exploration and collecting game, which I think the main Pokémon games sometimes neglect. It cuts away the fat.

I've just spent my Saturday night meeting hundreds of new people even way after midnight through this game. Genuinely the most fun I've had in ages. Amazing what this game has achieved and it hasn't cost me as penny.

When I was out today, a lot of people were complaining that the serves were down for what seemed like an extended period of time. Did something happen?

Don't eat any of the pizza in the airport if you can avoid it. I got a NASTY case of food poisoning from an airport pizzeria there. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the restaurant :(

Vaporeons are normally about 39 or 40, yeah.

I took a nap and woke up few hours earlier. I can finally log back in!

I'll take a break today to give my legs rest. Tomorrow I'll go to a new park I haven't been to.

I have attended to 2 new parks that I haven't been to before. I usually don't go to parks, but it's nice having a change in scenery.

As much as I enjoy this game, its become more and more apparent a)that having a job and b)not living next to a pokestop have put me at a severe disadvantage in gym battles. I see an ever increasing deficit that will probably have me moving toward something else.

Living in the suburbs is basically a death sentence for a player.

I think it's still a game that you can play casually. Easily being able to meet strangers with a common interest is great. That's not something that any other game can do for you.

Just going to find and collect Pokémon and eventually transfer them over to Sun and Moon, and then keep them with me for generations.

Yeah, I'm not much into the gym stuff myself. I just drop a pokemon off at a gym controlled by my team to get the coins. I just do the hunting and collecting. I'm finding that to be plenty of fun and very enjoyable.
