Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

This has been a fun thread for the past three years, many of us have been waiting a long, long time for this. Here is kudos to all of you. I expect great things from the new OT tomorrow, can’t wait to read about everyone’s adventures and to see all of the pics that will be populating it!

Hey, all we did was yak about it, the devs (a couple of whom have GAF accounts) did all the hard work. There were also a few times where it got decisively less fun (though thankfully, most of the Early Access bitching had it's own thread that quickly died out), but overall it's been an interesting ride. Looking forward to seeing all of the familiar faces pass through whatever I'm building soon.

OT will be about 1 part immersion to 3 parts information dump. People following the game over the last few years will know most of it (1.0 changes aside, trying to work those in), but for people who haven't played or are new it should give a nice intro to the basic game mechanics.

Think I'm going to purchase the game now and mess around with it a bit before the big update...

Just remember the current stable branch is outdated (like, seriously, 1.0 improves so much) and we're not 100% sure if anything will carry over from either version. So long as you're cool with starting over again tomorrow and look at it as getting a head start on learning the game, you should be good.

Now the big question, will we usually let the first spawn world become Gafworld or will we just use it as a safe start zone and have a separate Gafworld?

Yeah, I'll be ok with that :D

Ok, definitely time to get back into this! Except for that whole having a six month old and thus no time thing...

Will definitely be booting it up in the limited free time though.

Find the most Earth-like world before making it happen.

If there's still a singular starting planet in multiplayer, chances are good it will be a "Garden" planet (low threat, green space, lots of pine trees, probably home to a mine mini-dungeon).

My plan (again, if there's a singular starting planet in multiplayer) is to just build a little outpost right where you beam down that people can dump resources / building supplies at, new players can grab some supplies if needed, get a few vendor NPCs to move in and have crafting stations and such. Nothing fancy*, and then people can build whatever they like elsewhere on the planet or find another planet to build on (that's my plan).

Since there aren't destination-based transporters (though I'm sure someone will mod one in), any off-world locations will have to be discovered manually or via ship-to-ship teleport. We'll go from there, I guess.

* It'll look nice, but nothing enormous or taxing.

Oh man, I didn't know about race specific ship pets. Now I can't decide between the races!

But I think I'm set on Novakids. Snuggets look awesome, and the upgraded ship has no jumping involved so my pet can roam the entire ship with no problems.

I think I need to start my new char on single player now at least.

I don't want to go online with absolutely nothing. I need to get exploring ASAP.

I really hope the performance is improved from unstable to stable tomorrow :\. I'm getting fps drops to 50 in the ship. I also hope they find another solution for the mouse cursor, it's kind of awful to see it chug along the screen whenever the FPS does drop :lol. Wouldn't using hardware mouse fix that entirely? Anyone else having issues? I know, unstable, but this patch came yesterday and the game is out tomorrow, I wouldn't expect too many changes.

I doubt it's an actual performance issue though, since it does randomly run better in fullscreen, which doesn't even seem to be exclusive fullscreen. Blergh. I really really hope it's ironed out for release. Because on the whole the latest stable release runs much better than the latest unstable one :\. Maybe it's because it's OpenGL and AMD don't mix.

Might as well start...

Unless something has changed, I believe Novakids craft guns right away too, so they're a pretty solid choice.

Me? Boring old human. I like their ship design, their pet, their weapon and armor style (though I may grab a few glitch pieces just because), and I can make a dude that looks somewhat close to how I look.

Remember that HaRyu may not have the server up as soon as it goes live anyway, so going single player to start is probably a good idea.

Try running in full screen mode, that usually helped me when I was noticing performance drops on my larger builds.

Yeah full screen does help, somewhat, only makes the ship wobble between 58-60. Still dips 50 and below on planets constantly though. It's the reverse in the stable branch, where windowed mode gives me a stable 60 most of the time, apart from when near huge structures like the outpost.

Yeah, I love cats, but I don't really want the Human ship. It's what you expect. I want something weird.

I wanted to go Floran, but they have a weird snake pet lol. Despite the head bow, it's not as cute as the others. Then I was gonna go Glitch, but testing out the Human ship, I didn't really like jumping around in the ship. Just gonna use sprint and run around without any verticality.

If you're using the unstable branch, try going to the install folder and launching 64bit manually.

So how will the 1.0 version be? Fluid and without problems like Terraria or a mess like Crea? I intend to buy the game, but rather wait until the there are no major hiccups.

Does anyone who follows the game closely knows? Also how is it content wise compared to say, Terraria?

Question, can you craft Upgrade Modules?

For the ship? I know you can buy them, and supposedly there's a way to expand your ship based on your crew, but I didn't go far enough in unstable to find out. I don't think they're crafted anymore though, no.

1.0 is the official launch; the beta was messy but what I've played of the unstable branch (basically 1.0) is feature complete. If you were waiting for them to sort the hiccups out, that time is now, basically. Terraria was forced to launch early because the game leaked and it took them a while to get everything in. Not sure what the story is with Crea.

Content wise, it's strong in a lot of places (certainly stronger than Terraria was at launch), but Terraria has had 3+ years of them adding stuff. There's probably too much to go into here (trying to get as much of it in the OT as possible), but I'd say there's plenty to keep you entertained. Plus it has Workshop support which is something Terraria still hasn't added.

Dawn of the final day: Like, less than a day remains.

Blink tech is still a thing, right?

They changed the way Tech works so that you now have three slots; Jump tech, Morph Ball Tech and Dash Tech. You'll always have one version of each available (for example, all 4 morph ball techs shrink you down, but one also has a dash, one floats, and one clings to surfaces), but you can pick which kind you want.

Targeted blink is gone, but there's a blink dash that travels through enemies, and some weapons have blink-based attacks. It's definitely not the same though, but I think they stripped that out for balance reasons.

Tried that, makes absolutely no difference. If I stand still the FPS slowly crawls up to 60, but if I move around a bit it'll go as low as 40.

Yeah it's just after playing a while it'll start dipping lower, randomly goes up at places though, doesn't even matter if there's a complex scene or not

Going with a new thread for the official launch, or maybe a title edit on this one?
Edit: never mind, just saw the talk about an OT. Link it here when it's ready!

Yep, plugging in the graphics now, shouldn't be much more than another hour or so unless I decide to get fancy.

1.0 release today? Awesome! The early versions never really grabbed me, but it looks like the game's been greatly improved since. Hoping it'll be like Terraria was for me when it released and I end up spending the whole goddamn weekend playing lol

I haven't played this game probably since very early 2014. I enjoyed it but felt like I didn't want to get burned out before it released. Little did I know how long I'd be waiting!

I imagine there's been a metric fuckton of changes which have happened since like March 2014, so I'm really excited to jump in tomorrow and play the official 1.0 release!
